Chapter 186 Jessica's Scheme
The atmosphere in the hospital room was a bit different.
Jessica smiled slightly, giving off a feeling like a warm spring breeze, but to William, her smile contained too many meanings.
It hinted at schadenfreude, mockery, and even a subtle threat.
Jessica stood up and walked over to the sullen-faced William. She said softly, "Explain things to Mary properly. We'll meet again soon."
With that, Jessica turned to waved at Mary, saying, "Mary, I'll be leaving now. William had his reasons for keeping things from you. I hope you can understand and forgive him."
Mary wanted to get up to see her off, but William held her back.
She could only smile politely and say, "Jessica, come visit our home next time."
"Really?"
Jessica's expression visibly shifted, her eyebrows arching in surprise.. She smiled and said, "Alright, I'll come when I have time. I hope I won't be a bother."
Mary exchanged a few more formalities with Jessica before she finally left.
In the hospital room, only Mary and William were left.
"Close the door," Mary said coldly.
William responded and, like a child who had done something wrong, quickly ran over to close the door.
He was extremely nervous and scared now.
'What did Jessica tell Mary? My identity? Or something else?' William thought.
"Sit down," Mary said, crossing her arms with a cold expression.
William sat down immediately, like a student in class.
"William, when did you start hiding things from me?" Mary asked, in an icy and accusatory tone.
William sneaked a glance at Mary's expression and, after getting a slap on the arm, could only stammer, "Seven years ago."
Mary frowned, her expression became a bit unnatural. Then she continued to ask, "Why did you hide it from me? I'm your wife."
William felt very frustrated. Holding Mary's hand, he said, "Mary, I didn't want to, but I had my own unavoidable reasons."
Seeing William like this, Mary extended her fair arm and flicked his forehead with her fingers, smiling helplessly. "William, you're my husband. Can you tell me everything from now on? Although Jessica is the second wife of your father, it's not a big deal. Why didn't you tell me?"
The second wife of his father?
William was confused and anxiously asked, "Is that all Jessica said?"
Mary blinked and said, "Yes, she told me she's the wife your father married later. She came to Lindwood City this time to see you. She also asked me to persuade you that the family needs you, and your dad wants you to go back. Why didn't you agree? You're family. What unresolved issues could there be between father and son? You should consider going back some time."
William understood but was still uneasy. He asked, "Didn't she say anything about the background of my family and my identity, did she?"
'What exactly is Jessica trying to do?' thought William.
"Isn't your family running a restaurant? Didn't you tell me that last time?" Mary asked suspiciously.
Upon hearing William's question, she became even more confused, wondering if William had hidden something else from her.
"Yes, my family runs a restaurant."
William scratched his head awkwardly and he was pondering Jessica's intentions.
He almost got exposed.
"By the way, William, Jessica told me your father is not in good health. Don't you want to go back and see him?" Mary asked.
William paused, then smiled and handed the peeled apple to Mary."It's okay. In a while, I'll take you and Sarah back together."
Mary took the apple and said, "I know you might have some misunderstandings with Jessica, but I think she's really nice. She has a refined manner about her, in the way she speaks and carries herself. You two should find a chance to sit down and talk."
Mary didn't know exactly what the misunderstanding between William and Jessica was, but from the fact that William hid Jessica's identity last time, it was clear that William didn't want her to know who Jessica was.
But no matter what, Jessica was still William's stepmother.
"William, could it be? Were you beaten by Jessica when you were a child, so you hate her?"
Suddenly, Mary covered her mouth, her eyes wide open, thinking of scenes from TV dramas.
Would William have such a miserable childhood?
"No, stop overthinking."William smiled wryly.
He stuffed the apple into Mary's mouth and said, "Let's not talk about Jessica anymore. I know what I'm doing. Also, if she ever contacts you, you must tell me, okay?"
Mary was stunned for a moment, then nodded in agreement.
After finishing the apple, Mary asked, "William, how did you handle things with my mom?"
Mary was very worried that William might do something irrational in a fit of rage, but after all, Margaret was her mom, William's mother-in-law.
William's face remained calm as he said, "Nothing much, don't worry. If she has learned her lesson, she'll behave better."
Mary nodded. She knew Margaret was very wrong in this matter, so she wouldn't argue with William about it.
Moreover, Mary had already made her own decision.
After three days, Mary was discharged from the hospital.
As for Margaret, she just stayed at home.
These past few days, she had been living in fear, not even going out to buy groceries, afraid of being attacked.
Even at home, she kept the doors and windows tightly closed, fearing someone might break in and beat her up again.
She was traumatized and had a shadow over her.
Tyler was also very helpless. Margaret hadn't told him about the stupid thing she did.
When he asked who she had offended, Margaret was unable to provide a clear answer.
She didn't dare call the police because she feared being retaliated.
It was the underground king of Lindwood City Alan who beat her up.
That would be courting death if she dared to call police.
"Tyler, I suspect it was William who had someone beat me up. At the last birthday party, William and that Alan were chatting and laughing."
Margaret sat on the couch, her face still swollen, and her speech slightly slurred from the dental work she had just undergone.
"You keep saying it was William who had someone beat you up. Why would he do that?"
Tyler wouldn't call William back without knowing the reason like last time.
He had to know the reason.
Margaret was also conflicted. She definitely couldn't mention the abortion pills she gave Mary, so she made up a story, saying, "It was about that bracelet. William took it back, saying it was his mother's heirloom. I just wore it for two days, is it really worth him having me beaten?"
"William's mother's heirloom?"
Tyler was stunned. He didn't know William's mother had passed away, and he felt a bit sad.
Seeing Tyler's expression, Margaret kicked him hard and scolded, "What's wrong with you? Why are you sighing over a dead person? The point is, William had someone beat me up. I need to get back at him. If you don't help me, you can get out and not sleep in the bed."
Margaret had a stubborn streak—a tendency to seek retribution whenever she felt wronged.
It must have been William who had someone beat her up.
Tyler sighed helplessly and said, "You have no evidence that it was William who had someone beat you. Can't you stop making a scene? This family will be in chaos because of you."
With that, Tyler got up and went into the study, slamming the door.
Margaret was furious. As she was cursing, she suddenly thought of Isaac, so she gave him a call.
"Isaac, it's Margaret. Are you free? Let's meet up."
Margaret was all flattering and smiling.
After hanging up the phone, Margaret tidied herself up, put on a mask and sunglasses, and went out.
At a restaurant, Margaret told the receptionist arrogantly, "Isaac's private room."
The receptionist immediately bowed and respectfully led Margaret to the most luxurious private room on the second floor.
"Auntie Margaret." Isaac was already there, standing up and smiling politely.
"Isaac, no need for such formality. It must be expensive for a meal, right?"
Margaret sat down. She took off her sunglasses and mask and began to looked around.
What a nice place! All glittering and the waiters were very proper.
Isaac smiled, subtly showing off, "Auntie Margaret, it's nothing. A meal here costs only about several thousand dollars, not expensive. It's never too costly when it comes to treating you. Take a look at the menu. The specialty dishes here, like shark fin and Australian lobster, are quite good. How about a bottle of Lafite?"
