Chapter 163 Can't Transfer Right now
Ian frowned but quickly caught on.
The shareholder's company had indeed worked with Golden Peak Investment Company.
Ian was on a business trip then, so another manager from Golden Peak must've met this shareholder.
Golden Peak was the biggest investment firm in Riversong Province. James was a behind-the-scenes shareholder, the real chairman; Charles was the acting chairman, and there were four or five regional managers, each handling different areas. Ian had the most clout among the managers.
Everyone was stunned by the shareholder's words. This shareholder was the CEO of a listed company, so he had no reason to lie.
"James, got anything to say now?" Donovan asked coldly, putting down his phone.
James squinted at Donovan, staying calm. He knew Ian was the real deal.
Seeing James silent, Nancy thought he was admitting guilt and shouted, "James, you're shameless, hiring an actor to fool us!"
James didn't feel like explaining, so he said flatly, "Even if Ian's fake, is his money fake?"
"James, stop acting! Just admit you're a loser. What's the point of pretending?" Donovan sneered.
Laura stared at James, unsure if Ian was really from Golden Peak.
James suddenly turned to Ian and said, "Ian, stop wasting time. Just have your company transfer the money!"
Everyone was shocked.
Donovan looked confused, thinking, 'Why would James ask Ian to transfer money if Ian is just an actor? That would blow his cover.'
James knew it was normal for the shareholders to doubt Ian.
To them, James was just a poor delivery guy, and it seemed impossible for him to know Golden Peak's general manager.
James and Ian were from different worlds.
So, instead of explaining, James decided to have Golden Peak transfer the money to prove the truth.
James had plenty of money; a hundred million was a drop in the bucket for him. He wanted to use this cash to make Donovan and the others look foolish.
Ian nodded, picked up his phone, and walked out of the conference room.
Everyone watched Ian leave, the room falling silent.
"Could this Ian really be from Golden Peak Investment Company?"
Donovan felt uneasy and quickly pulled out his phone to call his dad and check if there was an Ian at Golden Peak Investment Company.
But before he could dial, Ian rushed back in and said to James, "Mr. Smith, the company can't transfer the money right now!"
The room erupted in murmurs of disbelief.
Donovan smirked, putting his phone down. "What a scare! I actually believed James knew the general manager of Golden Peak Investment Company. Turns out, it was all an act!"
James stood up, looked at Ian, and asked quietly, "Why?"
Ian glanced around and replied softly, "Mr. Smith, let's talk outside."
"Alright," James nodded and got up to leave.
"James, how long are you going to keep this up? Just admit you're acting. I'm sure Laura won’t do anything drastic. What's the point?" Donovan said coldly.
James shot Donovan a cold look and followed Ian out.
Laura stood there, confused, unsure if James was lying.
"Laura, you don't still believe James, do you?" Donovan asked.
"Yeah, Laura, James is a fraud. Ian's an actor he hired. He's been lying to you!" Nancy shouted.
"Why would James lie to me? What would he gain?" Laura asked.
"He wants to marry you, cousin. He doesn't want you with Donovan. He wants to keep you!" Nancy replied quickly.
"But if he was lying, he wouldn't have signed that contract yesterday or come today," Laura said softly, shaking her head.
One of the shareholders chimed in, "Laura, you're too young. This guy's been acting from the start. Someone like him couldn't know Golden Peak's general manager."
Laura rubbed her temples, tired. "Alright, telling me this now is useless. If James lied, Mr. Phillips won't invest. If he didn't, I'll honor my engagement with him."
"Let's wait and see. He'll probably say Golden Peak has issues and can only transfer the money tomorrow, then find another excuse. In the end, you'll be the one hurt, Laura," Donovan said confidently, sure that James and Ian were frauds.
