Chapter 277 You Understand Piano Too?
"No problem!" Lily said with a confident nod.
Lyle, though, just looked bored.
Though "Mariage d'Amour" was a famous piano piece, it was pretty straightforward, except for the tricky ending.
For Lily, picking this piece wasn't doing her any favors.
She hadn't played it in years, so mistakes were bound to happen. Meanwhile, this piece was Richard Clayderman's signature song, and Lyle knew it inside out. Vivienne had clearly chosen it to trip Lily up.
Seeing Lily agree so quickly, Laura felt a pang of worry.
She knew how stubborn Lily could be. Even if she knew the piece wasn't in her favor, she still agreed without a second thought.
Just then, the prelude to "Mariage d'Amour" started.
The whole piano room went silent, and everyone zeroed in on Lily and Lyle.
They both started playing at the same time, making it easy to tell who was better.
Lily and Lyle both closed their eyes.
Everyone else followed suit, quietly soaking in the music.
Only Nancy and James, who didn't know a thing about piano, stood there looking lost.
After a moment, James closed his eyes, too.
"James, why are you closing your eyes? Do you even know anything about piano? Who are you trying to fool?" Nancy snapped, annoyed.
James just ignored her.
A few minutes later, he slowly opened his eyes.
Seeing this, Nancy smirked and said, "Can't keep up the act, huh? I knew you couldn't appreciate it."
"Lily's already lost; no point in listening anymore," James said calmly.
"How do you know Lily lost?" Nancy shouted, her big eyes wide with agitation.
Hearing their exchange, Laura opened her eyes too and asked James softly, "James, do you know about piano?"
"Laura, do you really think he knows anything about piano? He's just talking nonsense. Don't listen to him!" Nancy quickly interjected.
"That's not nonsense. The hardest part of 'Mariage d'Amour' is the ending. It tests not just the pianist's familiarity with the piece but also their technique and emotion. Lily isn't familiar with it and hasn't played in a long time, so she's naturally nervous, which affects her emotionally. Given all that, Lily can't win today," James explained, his face expressionless.
"Are you serious?" Nancy couldn't help but question, pouting as she saw James analyze so confidently.
"Really, James? You actually understand piano?" Laura was also shocked. She had studied piano for a while, but she didn't quite get what James had just said.
In their eyes, James was just an ordinary college student. How could he know so much about piano?
Just then, the music abruptly stopped.
Lily looked at Lyle, hesitated, and then said softly, "You're impressive. I lost."
Hearing Lily's words, Laura and Nancy's eyes widened in shock, staring at James.
Their shock wasn't because Lily lost, but because James had called it perfectly! James, just an ordinary college student with no apparent connection to piano, had nailed the outcome of Lily and Lyle's piano duel. To Laura, this was mind-blowing.
Laura had studied piano, too, but she couldn't tell who was better, Lily or Lyle. James could!
This meant James not only understood piano but had a deep knowledge of it.
Just as Laura was about to ask James more, Lyle stood up slowly, walked to Lily, and said softly, "Actually, your piano skills are quite good, but since you haven't practiced in a while, your technique is a bit rusty."
"A loss is a loss. I won't make any excuses," Lily, a proud woman, felt dejected losing to Lyle, but she didn't show it. This was the grace a proud woman should have.
Lyle said arrogantly, "If you had more time to practice, your skills could improve, but no matter what, you could never be my match!"
Lyle spoke with a smug smile, his eyes lingering on Lily's chest.
Seeing Lyle's lewd gaze, Lily's face showed a hint of disgust, and she turned to leave.
"Lily, don't rush off. Weren't you so arrogant just now? Why aren't you saying anything now?" Vivienne quickly blocked Lily and taunted her.
"The person who beat me today isn't you; it's your boyfriend. What do you have to brag about?" Lily said calmly, looking at Vivienne.
"So what if it wasn't me? Lyle is my boyfriend. It doesn't matter if I can't beat you as long as my boyfriend is better than you!" Vivienne pouted and continued, "For us women, the most important thing is to find a good husband, unlike someone, finding a poor loser." As Vivienne said this, she glanced at James with disdain.
