Chapter 300 The Outstanding Young Generation
"Rufus?" James paused for a moment after hearing Laura's words, then frowned and asked, "Do you know this person?"
"Of course I do. Rufus is the eldest son of my great-uncle Kirk. I met him once at my second great-uncle Floyd's birthday banquet," Laura replied casually, a strange look flashing in her eyes.
"What's wrong?" James noticed the odd expression on Laura's face and asked, puzzled.
"Nothing." Laura shook her head lightly.
At this moment, Lily and Nancy walked up to James and whispered, "This Rufus is not an ordinary person."
"What's so special about him?" James asked, puzzled.
"Although the Hall family is large, most of us, whether from my grandfather's side or his two brothers' families, are businessmen. Few have pursued a career in public service, and even fewer have achieved significant success. But Rufus is different."
Lily paused, then continued, "Rufus was just an ordinary kid in the Kirk family. He didn't show any exceptional talent when he was young, so he was often looked down upon. But later, no one expected that this ordinary kid would choose to join the military!"
"Join the military?"
James's face showed a hint of surprise upon hearing this.
Although James had met many wealthy second-generation heirs, none had chosen to join the military.
Military life was tough and required immense willpower and self-discipline. It might be acceptable for kids from poor families, but for someone like Rufus, who had grown up in luxury, it would be hard to endure.
"While serving, Rufus met a very influential figure. After completing his service, he was taken under this person's wing. In just a few years, Rufus went from being a mere driver to a significant official in Lumina City, enjoying great prestige, far surpassing the other descendants of the Hall family."
Lily continued, looking at James.
"What's so impressive about that? Rufus just got lucky." At this moment, Reid walked up to Lily and said coldly.
"Reid, you're just jealous that Rufus stole your spotlight, aren't you?" Laura said to Reid with a blank expression.
Laura had been holding a grudge since Reid's father, Zachariah, didn't speak up for James last night, so her words were inevitably harsh.
Reid chuckled, then glanced at James and said to Laura in a low voice, "I admit I'm not as good as Rufus, but no matter how bad I am, I'm still better than your useless fiancé!"
"How do you know you're better than James?"
Laura glared, her expression a mix of shame and anger.
"No matter how poorly I do, I'm still better than a delivery guy, right?" Reid sneered and then turned and left.
"What's up with Reid today? Why is he being so nasty?" Nancy asked, puzzled, as she watched Reid's back.
"If it weren't for Rufus, Reid would probably be the most outstanding child in the Hall family. But now, compared to Rufus, the gap is too big. So seeing Rufus today must have made him very upset."
Lily explained with a blank expression.
"Even if he's in a bad mood, it has nothing to do with us. Why take it out on us?" Nancy rolled her eyes.
James, meanwhile, watched Reid's departing figure with a blank expression, squinting his eyes without saying a word.
"Alright, the banquet is about to start. Let's go inside." Laura called out expressionlessly and walked into the hotel in her high heels.
Moments later, Laura and the others sat at a table not far from Conrad, Floyd, and others. Reid and Rufus, as younger members of the Hall family, naturally sat with James and the other young people.
Conrad, Floyd, Kirk, and their old friends sat at one table, while Joe, Zachariah, and other middle-aged men sat at another.
After James sat down, he noticed that Rufus sat coldly in his seat, not intending to chat with Reid, Laura, or anyone else, keeping his eyes closed the entire time.
Dorian tried to chat with Rufus, but Rufus didn't even open his eyes, clearly not interested in talking to Dorian.
Seeing Rufus's indifference, Dorian wisely shut his mouth and stopped talking.
As the banquet began, guests started entering the hall.
This was usually the time to showcase a family's prosperity.
But to James's surprise, the guests who came to congratulate Conrad were not there for him but for Kirk and Floyd!
It felt as if today was not Conrad's birthday but Kirk and Floyd's.
Conrad had a decent reputation in Willowbrook, but compared to Kirk and Floyd, there was a significant gap.
Seeing the guests surrounding Kirk and Floyd, Conrad's eyes showed a hint of embarrassment, but he didn't dare say much.
After all, his two brothers were indeed more successful than him, an undeniable fact!
Rufus, who had been silent, suddenly spoke, "Who would have thought that after all these years, your branch of the Hall family is still doing so poorly! The guests here are just a bunch of nobodies, and they're here for Kirk and Floyd. If it weren't for my two grandfathers, I bet you wouldn't have any guests at all."
Laura, Nancy, and the others turned to look at Rufus, their faces filled with anger.
"Rufus, what are you saying?" The most furious person at this moment was Conrad's eldest grandson, Reid.
"I'm saying your branch is doing terribly. If it weren't for my two grandfathers, you wouldn't have any guests. Do you have a problem with that?" Rufus replied disdainfully, sitting in his seat.
