Chapter 309 Willie Arrives!
James saw Laura walking towards him and instinctively put his phone away.
With an awkward expression, he asked Laura, "Laura, what brings you here?"
"James, are you okay? Don't take what my grandpa said to heart; he didn't mean to target you specifically!"
Laura, worried that James might get angry and leave, softly comforted him.
"So it's about that!" James felt a wave of relief after hearing Laura's words.
In fact, he hadn't taken Conrad's words to heart at all. What he was worried about was whether Laura had overheard his conversation with Atticus.
"What else could it be?" Laura blinked her big, watery eyes and asked with a puzzled expression.
"Nothing." James quickly shook his head and then ended his call with Atticus.
"James, if you're not busy, come with me to a place. There's nothing for us to do at the birthday banquet now, so we might as well take this opportunity to have some fun."
Laura thought for a moment and decided she couldn't let James leave just like that.
She planned to wait until Conrad had completely calmed down before bringing James back to explain everything properly.
"Don't you need to go back to the birthday banquet?" James asked Laura with a puzzled expression.
"Why would I go back? Besides, my grandpa said that if I dared to come out and find you, I shouldn't bother going back," Laura replied nonchalantly, then glanced at James and asked softly, "James, tell me the truth, was the person who came to wish my grandpa a happy birthday really Lucian?"
"Why are you asking me this? Do you suspect me too?" James asked Laura with a serious expression.
"James, don't misunderstand. I don't suspect you at all. I'm just curious why you know someone like Lucian, and why such a big boss like him would give my grandpa such a small gift. Isn't that a bit stingy?" Laura asked with a puzzled tone.
"I know Lucian because of Charles. Actually, Charles is the real chairman of Evergreen Investment Company. For certain reasons, Charles hasn't publicly acknowledged this. But as for why Lucian gave your grandpa that gift, I really don't know!" James explained casually.
"So that's how it is!" Laura nodded lightly. Although she still had some doubts, she didn't ask further.
"If you don't believe me, you can go to Evergreen Investment Company in Lumina City and ask around," James continued, looking at Laura.
"Of course, I believe you. But my grandpa..." Laura sighed lightly, then smiled and said softly, "Alright, let's not talk about this anymore. Even though you and my grandpa have some misunderstandings now, I believe these misunderstandings will be cleared up eventually."
"As long as they can be cleared up!" James nodded without saying much more, as he didn't care about others' opinions of him. As long as Laura didn't misunderstand him, that was enough.
"And why didn't you agree when my grandpa wanted you to stay with him yesterday?" Laura suddenly remembered last night's events and asked James with a frown.
James smiled faintly at this and said, "I don't want your family to look down on me and think I succeeded because of the Hall Family. I want to earn money and marry you through my own efforts, not because of your grandpa's help."
"I didn't expect you to have such backbone!" Laura's mood improved significantly after hearing James' explanation, and she said with a smile.
"Just because I don't show it doesn't mean I don't have it!" James said to Laura with an unusually confident tone.
Laura was momentarily stunned as she looked at James. At that moment, she felt that James might not be as simple as she had thought. From his performance at the ArtScape Center, she could tell.
How could a poor student delivering food be proficient in piano and violin?
But Laura didn't feel like discussing these issues with James now. She said softly, "James, let me take you to the amusement park near Willowbrook. I used to go there a lot when I was a kid. We can check it out today."
"Alright!" James nodded and followed Laura towards the parking lot.
Meanwhile, inside the restaurant.
Rufus finally managed to get Laura and James to leave, and Reid began to calm down. After all, the situation with James was too embarrassing, and he didn't even have the face to speak now.
After James and Laura left, Conrad's anger seemed to subside a bit. He apologized to the guests present and then returned to his seat.
The incident with James had a significant impact on everyone. The Hall Family felt humiliated, and the guests at the banquet were whispering among themselves.
What was supposed to be a joyous birthday banquet had turned into such a mess, leaving everyone feeling uncomfortable.
"Joe, as your older brother, I have to say something. What do you see in that James? Why do you want Laura to marry someone like him? Look at how he angered our dad today. What is this all about?" Zachariah scolded Joe.
Although Joe didn't want to admit it, James was still his son-in-law no matter what.
Since James had done something wrong, Joe had to take responsibility. So, he could only nod in agreement with Zachariah.
"Zachariah, I don't want Laura to marry James either, but Laura just won't agree. What can I do?" Joe said to Zachariah with a helpless tone.
"If you really don't want Laura to marry James, it's simple!" Zachariah replied in a low voice, then opened his mouth to say something.
"Blue Horizon Capital, Willie Reed, Mr. Reed has arrived!"
At that moment, the hostess at the restaurant entrance suddenly announced loudly.
"Blue Horizon Capital?"
"No way, why would Mr. Reed from Blue Horizon Capital come here?"
The crowd was instantly abuzz with shock upon hearing Willie's name, their faces full of astonishment.
To the people present, the name Willie was well-known. Anyone with some status or background had heard of Mr. Reed.
Willie's status in the city was comparable to that of Charles from Lumina City.
Moreover, Willie was said to be one of the top ten richest people in Riversong Province. For such a big shot to come to a small place like Willowbrook was simply unbelievable to the guests in the restaurant.
