Chapter 73 Donna's Good Intention
Donna and the other two followed James out of the classroom, their faces filled with confusion.
Because they couldn't understand why Ashley, who had always looked down on James, would actually want to sleep with him.
Although Ashley didn't directly admit to it today, from her words and actions, it was apparent that this was likely true, otherwise she wouldn't have been so eager for James to leave.
This indirectly confirmed everything!
"James, what's going on between you and Ashley?" Paul couldn't help but ask as he walked up to James.
"Yeah, James, why would Ashley want to sleep with you?" Tyler also asked curiously.
James turned to look at the two of them, then briefly recounted the incident where Ashley was kidnapped by Kevin and others, and then called James to rescue her with money.
Although James wasn't ready to reveal his identity to Paul and Tyler yet, he felt it was okay to tell them this.
After hearing James's explanation, Paul suddenly realized and quickly said, "So Ashley wanted to repay the fifty thousand dollars by sleeping with you, right?"
"Yes, but I'm not interested in Ashley, so I didn't touch her. I didn’t intend to tell anyone about this, but Ashley went too far today, and I lost control for a moment and blurted it out!" James explained softly.
"Oh, I see!" Tyler nodded lightly, his confusion resolved.
This explanation from James seemed quite plausible to Paul and Tyler.
Because otherwise, Ashley, who was always so proud, wouldn't have offered to sleep with James.
"But James, where did you get that fifty thousand dollars?" Donna, sensing something was off, asked James with a frown.
"Yeah, James, last time you said you had money to treat everyone was because you won the lottery, but didn't you already spend most of it? Where did this fifty thousand dollars come from?" Paul also caught on and asked.
After hearing the questions from the two, James hesitated for a moment, then said softly, "Actually, I didn't tell you the truth at the time. I won a total of one hundred and fifty thousand in the lottery. I spent nearly a hundred thousand on the meal, and the remaining fifty thousand I used to save Ashley and Sandra, so now I've spent it all."
Donna, Paul, and Tyler all stared at James in shock, their eyes widened.
They never expected that James, who had always been regarded as a poor loser, would have such good luck winning one hundred and fifty thousand in one go.
Students at the University of Lumina came from various backgrounds, and even those from ordinary families had a monthly allowance of only around two thousand.
Only a very few students from wealthy families got over three thousand a month.
So, when James mentioned the sum of one hundred and fifty thousand, it seemed astronomical.
What puzzled them even more was that after winning such a huge amount, James had spent it all on things like treating everyone to a meal and saving Ashley and Sandra.
They couldn't understand what James was thinking. Could it be that James had gotten used to live in poverty and didn't know how to manage such a large sum?
Although they didn't understand why James wasted this money, they still believed his explanation.
"James, if you won so much money, you should have saved it. Even just living off the interest could improve your life," Donna said with a frown, clearly distressed.
"This money was unexpected for me. Even if I wasted it, it doesn't affect me," James explained lightly.
"But this money could have been very useful for you. If you didn’t waste it, you wouldn’t have to deliver food, and you can buy new clothes. Then people won't look down on you anymore!" Donna continued. "Even if I change my clothes, they still won't look at me differently."
Upon hearing Donna's words, James couldn't help but smile and continued, "Not really. They look down on me not because of the clothes I wear, but because deep down, they've already classified me as a poor loser!"
"If I use the money to buy myself an expensive outfit, they would still think it was something I picked up or stole. Even if I provide evidence that I bought it myself, they would still think I'm a fool, and the fact that they look down on me wouldn't change!"
Donna looked at James, momentarily stunned. She suddenly felt that what James said made some sense.
"Whether others respect you or not depends on them, not on yourself. Look at me now, wearing these worn-out clothes. You all still choose to stay by my side as my friends. As for those who look down on me, even if I put on designer clothes, they would still look down on me!"
James paused for a moment, then continued, "I think my current outfit is just fine. I don't need to change anything because of other people's opinions!"
"I actually think James has a point. Clothes are just clothes. As long as you like them, that's what matters. There's no need to force yourself to change based on others' opinions!" Paul seemed to agree with James's approach, smiling as he spoke.
"Even if you didn’t want new clothes, you could have used the money for something else, instead of wasting it like this!" Donna still felt sorry for James.
James knew that Donna meant well.
So he didn't argue but instead checked the time on his phone and said, "I have something to do later, so I'll leave now."
With that, James walked towards the University of Lumina's gate. He wasn’t in the mood to chat with Donna and the others, especially since he didn't care much about the mere fifty thousand.
As the world's richest man with a ten trillion inheritance, such a small amount was insignificant to him.
Moreover, James was still worried about Linda.
As for changing clothes, James had bought a few new outfits before.
But then, he felt that his old clothes were fine. At least they helped him see people's true colors.
This was also why, despite buying new clothes, he still dressed modestly.
