Chapter 229 Misunderstanding Resolved

After James yanked Laura into the car, he floored it and sped off.

The crowd below the building was totally stunned. They had no clue what was going on.

What was supposed to be a simple confession turned into a full-blown kidnapping, right in front of everyone.

If some of Laura's coworkers hadn't recognized James, someone might've actually called the cops.

"James, what the hell are you doing? Stop the car and let me out, or I'm calling the police!" Laura, sitting in the passenger seat, yelled at James, her face all twisted up with anger.

"Can you chill for a second and let me explain?" James replied, his face a blank slate as he drove.

Laura let out a long sigh and muttered, "I have a super important meeting at work today. I don't have time for this nonsense!"

"I don't want to waste time either. If you calm down and hear me out, I'll let you go right away!" James said, still calm.

"Fine, stop the car now, and I'll give you time to explain!" Laura shouted, clearly frustrated.

"Are you serious?" James was taken aback for a moment, then glanced at her and asked.

Laura replied, "Of course, but you've got only ten minutes. If you can't make it clear, I'm calling the cops!"

Even though Laura didn't think James could explain the photos, she had no choice but to compromise, worried he might take her somewhere else.

"Alright!" James nodded and pulled the car over to the side of the road.

"Say what you need to say now!" Laura said coldly after he stopped the car.

"The photos you saw at school that day were all fake. Someone photoshopped them to set me up," James explained, looking serious.

"And then?" Laura clearly didn't buy it, so she asked with a cold smile.

"I know you won't believe me, but I have proof!" James said as he pulled out a letter Sandra had written for him and handed it to Laura.

"What is this?" Laura asked, confused.

"Read it," James said, still expressionless.

Laura hesitated for a moment, then opened the letter and started reading it carefully.

A few minutes later, Laura looked at James, puzzled, and said softly, "According to this letter, all those photos were photoshopped by your ex-girlfriend, and she had someone post them at school, right?"

"Yes!" James nodded.

Laura looked at the letter in her hand, couldn't help but sneer, and then said lightly, "James, do you really think I'm that easy to fool? Do you think a letter alone will make me believe what you're saying?"

"Besides this letter, I've got a recording of my chat with my ex-girlfriend!" James said, pulling out his phone and playing the recording from the night before.

James had recorded the conversation with Jennifer, knowing the letter alone wouldn't cut it. He needed something more concrete.

And nothing beat having the person admit to their own mess.

But James knew a lot of that chat with Jennifer touched on his secret identity, which he didn't want Laura to know about.

So, the recording Laura heard was edited by James.

This way, Laura wouldn't find out about his identity but would still get the truth about the incident.

A few minutes later, Laura finished listening, her face a mix of shock and confusion.

If it was just the letter, she wouldn't have believed James, but the recording made a big difference.

"Was this really all your ex-girlfriend's doing?" Laura asked, her eyes wide with disbelief.

"You heard the recording. Jennifer planned the whole thing. It had nothing to do with me. I'm the real victim here!" James said, looking serious.

"But why would your ex do this? If it blew up, it wouldn't help her at all, right?" Laura asked, still puzzled.

James knew exactly why Jennifer did it: money.

But he couldn't tell Laura the truth. If she knew Jennifer had blackmailed him for five million dollars, his secret would be out.

So, James explained, "Jennifer did this to extort money from me!"

"Extort money?" Laura's confusion deepened.

"Yeah, she somehow found out about our relationship and knew I got twenty thousand dollars a month from you. So she planned this whole thing to squeeze money out of me!" James said calmly.

"I can't believe she'd do something like that!" Laura exclaimed.

"You don't know Jennifer. She'd do anything for money!" James quickly replied, then asked, "Do you believe now that I was framed?"

Laura looked at James, still silent.

"If you still don't believe me, I can call Jennifer and have her explain everything to you!" James said, reaching for his phone.

"No need to make it so complicated!" Laura replied, stopping him before he could make the call.

"So you believe me now?" James asked, looking at her.

"Yes, I do, okay?" Laura nodded.

"Alright, since you believe me now, can we go get our marriage license?" James asked, excitement in his voice.
