Chapter 236 The VIP of the Banquet
"Why would I lie to you?" Nancy pouted, sounding annoyed. "James really is my cousin's fiancé!"
"Seriously? How could your cousin pick a guy like him? He's got nothing going for him except his looks. What was she thinking?" Nancy's friend shot back.
"Well, James might be broke, but he's got some good qualities!" Nancy, who usually trashed James, surprisingly defended him this time.
Maybe it was because James had helped Laura's company snag some investors recently, which made Nancy see him in a slightly better light.
Still, she couldn't shake the feeling that James was a bit of a loser; he just seemed a little less annoying now.
"I don't get what's so great about him. Fairy Lake Resort is closed today, and he still wants to go in. Is he nuts?" Nancy's friend said, rolling her eyes.
"Yeah, there's a company banquet at Fairy Lake Resort today. Why would he even try to get in?"
Nancy realized this and quickly yelled at James, "James, Fairy Lake Resort is hosting a company banquet today. Regular guests are kicked out. You can't get in, so don't waste your money on a ticket!"
Nancy thought James was about to buy a ticket, so she tried to give him a heads-up.
Even though she doubted James would spend money here, he could probably afford a ticket that costs a few thousand bucks.
James turned to look at Nancy and said calmly, "Just because you can't get in doesn't mean I can't."
"You!" Nancy glared at James, momentarily speechless. Then she shouted angrily, "You're so ungrateful!"
Nancy had meant to help James out by letting him know the place was off-limits, but his response ticked her off.
"Nancy, it looks like your cousin's fiancé is not only broke but also a show-off! The staff inside said the resort is hosting a company banquet today, and all the big shots from Lumina City will be there. No one else can get in, but this guy says he can. It's hilarious!" A girl who didn't get along with Nancy couldn't help but mock.
"Yeah, he's totally bluffing! If he can really get in, he must be staff; otherwise, no way!" Another girl chimed in.
"Or maybe he's the VIP that Fairy Lake Resort is expecting!" A girl next to Nancy said sarcastically.
"That's a good one!" The girls around burst into laughter, their faces full of disdain. Clearly, they all took it as a joke.
Nancy felt a wave of discomfort hearing the laughter. It wasn't just James they were mocking; it felt like they were taking shots at Laura and even her.
'Damn James, why do I keep running into him? It's so embarrassing!' Nancy cursed silently, then turned to her friends and said, "Alright, enough. Let's go!"
Seeing Nancy's irritation, everyone stopped laughing and started heading towards the roadside.
Meanwhile, James stood at the entrance, waiting calmly for Charles' entourage to welcome him. After all, the entire Fairy Lake Resort was his.
"Mr. Smith!" After a couple of minutes, a middle-aged man in a black suit came running out of the resort, looking flustered.
James turned and glanced at the man.
"Mr. Smith, I'm so sorry for the delay. Something came up, and I was a bit late. Please forgive me!" The man explained respectfully.
The two security guards at the entrance were wide-eyed and incredulous.
They knew this man was Atticus Hayes, the general manager of Fairy Lake Resort. Even when the deputy mayor of Lumina City came for an inspection, he wasn't this nervous. But now, facing a seemingly poor guy, he was so flustered. The security guards found it unbelievable.
"Are you the person in charge here?" James asked, sizing up the man.
"Yes, I'm Atticus, the general manager here!" The man answered respectfully.
"Oh, okay!" James nodded lightly, not saying much more.
"Mr. Smith, it's really hot out here. Let's go inside!" Atticus Hayes was extremely respectful, even slightly bowing as he spoke.
"Okay!" James didn't hold Atticus accountable for being late since he had only called Charles after arriving. It was normal for Atticus to be a bit late.
"Mr. Smith, this way, please!" Atticus called out respectfully and then led James into Fairy Lake Resort.
Meanwhile, Nancy and her friends were standing by the roadside, waiting for a taxi.
"Nancy, your cousin's fiancé actually went into Fairy Lake Resort!" A girl suddenly shouted.
Nancy quickly turned to look and saw James walking into the resort with Atticus Hayes.
She was stunned and couldn't help but exclaim, "He did?"
The others were also shocked, their faces full of surprise.
The staff at Fairy Lake Resort had just mentioned that the resort was holding an important banquet today and had kicked out all the tourists, including Nancy and her friends.
But now, James could enter the resort. Could he really be a VIP at the banquet?
