Chapter 261 Compensation of Forty Million Dollars!

"Pay you back?" Thalassa was floored when Atticus asked them to cover the cost of the vase. She shot a look at Leander, feeling utterly let down.

She knew Leander had been lying to them. If he really knew Atticus, this wouldn't be happening.

So, at this moment, Thalassa had already made up her mind to break up with Leander.

Since she was breaking up with him and it was her uncle Joe who broke the vase, there was no way she was letting Leander pay for it.

Taking a deep breath, Thalassa turned to Atticus and said, "Alright, how much? I'll pay."

"You should call your family to sort this out," Atticus said, his tone firm.

"How much could a vase like that be worth? Just tell me already. Don't waste my time," Thalassa snapped, pulling out her phone.

She figured the vases in most restaurants were cheap, maybe a few thousand bucks tops.

Atticus sneered and stepped closer. "Miss, this pair of vases was bought at Sotheby's auction house. They're valuable antiques."

Leander stood there, stunned. He had no idea these ordinary-looking vases were actually worth something.

Thalassa didn't know much about antiques, but Atticus's tone made her nervous. "Really?"

"Of course," Atticus replied, his face unreadable.

"So, how much?" Thalassa just wanted to know the damage.

"Since you didn't break it on purpose, I won't ask for more. I bought this pair of vases at Sotheby's for eighty million dollars. Now that you've broken one, just pay me forty million," Atticus said, knowing Thalassa and her group had some ties to James, so he was only asking for the original price.

The restaurant patrons were all in shock when they heard the forty million dollar figure.

They knew the vase might be valuable, but forty million? That was insane.

"Mr. Hayes, you're joking, right? This vase... is worth forty... million?" Thalassa stammered, eyes wide.

"Why would I joke with you? If you don't believe me, you can get an antique expert to appraise it, or I can show you the auction receipt," Atticus replied coldly.

Leander hesitated, seeing the situation. He knew Atticus was a big deal in Lumina City and wouldn't scam people over a vase. But forty million dollars was a crazy amount for both him and Thalassa. Even Joe probably couldn't come up with that kind of money either.

Leander knew there was no future with Thalassa. Sticking around would just cause more trouble.

After a moment of hesitation, he decided to slip away while Atticus was distracted.

But he only got a few steps before the restaurant's security stopped him.

"Sir, this matter isn't resolved yet; you can't leave," the guard said firmly.

Leander felt trapped. He had stayed to get closer to Atticus, hoping to understand why he was being so accommodating.

But it turned out Atticus didn't know him at all, and the earlier behavior in the private room had nothing to do with him.

If that was all, Leander could deal with it. The meal had just cost him less than two hundred thousand dollars. But now, thanks to Joe, he was facing a forty-million-dollar problem.

Leander deeply regretted showing off earlier.

"How do you plan to pay me?" Atticus asked Thalassa, his tone indifferent.

"Mr. Hayes, I didn't break the vase; it has nothing to do with me!" Thalassa said, her voice trembling.

"If you don't want to pay, bring the person who broke the vase here. Otherwise, neither of you will leave today," Atticus said bluntly.

"Okay, I'll call now!" Thalassa quickly nodded, her hands shaking as she pulled out her phone.

If the vase had only cost a few thousand dollars, she could have managed it. Her family was well-off, and Joe wouldn't pay this money back.

But forty million dollars? No way.

So Thalassa had no choice but to call Thalia and Joe.

Meanwhile, James, Laura, Joe, and the others had returned to the hotel prepared by The Hall Family.

Thalia was sitting on the sofa chatting with Joe and Isolde, while Laura and James were in another room.

"Joe, look at James. He has no money, no background, and he looks foolish. He can't compare to Leander, not even to ordinary people!" Thalia said, seizing the opportunity to boast.

"I understand, but having Laura marry James wasn't my idea. I'm out of options," Joe replied helplessly.

"Yes, we also want Laura to find a reliable boyfriend. Even if James were half as good as Leander, I'd be relieved!" Isolde added.

"Leander is fabulous and treats Thalassa well!" Thalia said proudly.

"Thalia, I envy you!" Isolde said enviously.

"Have Laura break up with James as soon as possible. He is useless," Thalia said, pouting.

Joe and Isolde exchanged a glance, feeling very uncomfortable.
