Chapter 232 What Exactly Does She Want to Do?
Seeing Charles' call, James jumped up and told Laura, "Gotta take this!"
"Sure," Laura nodded.
James grabbed his phone and headed towards the restaurant's restroom.
Just as he stepped in, a stunning woman walked into the restaurant.
She scanned the room and locked eyes on Laura.
"That must be James's fiancée," she murmured with a sly smile. Strutting in her high heels, she made her way over to Laura.
In the restroom, James answered the call.
"Hello," he said quietly.
"Mr. Smith, where are you right now?" Charles asked, sounding cheerful.
"I'm at Dawnlight Square. What's up?" James cut to the chase.
"Well, Mr. Smith, tonight our Golden Peak Group is hosting a banquet. All the top brass from your company will be there, along with some big names from Lumina City. I think it's high time you met the folks working under you since you've inherited the former chairman's estate," Charles suggested.
James knew the former chairman had built a massive business empire, with stakes in almost every major company. It took a big team to run these businesses.
The people Charles mentioned were probably the execs managing James' companies. But James rarely met them in person since Charles handled most of the business.
"I'll pass," James said after a pause.
He figured if he went, he'd just hear a bunch of flattery, which he wasn't interested in.
"Come on, Mr. Smith. These execs have been dying to meet you since you took over Golden Peak Group. They don't want to accidentally offend you. Plus, tonight's attendees are key members of our group. If you don't show, they might feel let down, which isn't good for the company," Charles pleaded.
"Alright, I'll go. Where and when?" James interrupted, feeling a bit cornered.
"Tonight at 8 PM, at the Fairy Lake Resort in Lumina City!" Charles replied, sounding relieved.
"Fine, I'll be there," James said, knowing Charles wouldn't drop it otherwise.
"Need a ride?" Charles asked eagerly.
"No, I know the place. I'll get there myself," James replied and hung up.
He walked back to his table with Laura, but when he got there, he was stunned, his face showing pure shock.
"Sylvie? What's she doing back?" James muttered, his voice shaky.
There she was, sitting in his seat, chatting with Laura like they were old friends. Laura seemed happy, not a hint of anger.
"James, you're back!" Laura called out, waving.
"Yeah," James nodded, ready to confront Sylvie, but she beat him to it.
"Laura, who's this?" Sylvie asked, pointing at James with a puzzled look.
"Sylvie, this is my fiancé, James!" Laura introduced with a smile. "James, this is Sylvie. She's a shareholder of this restaurant!"
"A shareholder?" James was thrown off. He knew Sylvie, but she was acting like she didn't know him. What was going on?
James shot Sylvie a questioning look. She winked at him when Laura wasn't looking and said, "Nice to meet you, Mr. Smith. This place is co-owned by me and a friend. Had a great chat with Miss Hall today. I'll give you a 50% discount on your meal!"
"You..." James started, but Sylvie cut him off.
"Miss Hall, I have some matters to attend to, so I'll be leaving now," Sylvie said.
"Alright!" Laura nodded.
Sylvie gave James a mysterious smile and walked out.
"What is she up to?" James muttered, watching her leave.
"James, why are you just standing there? Sit down and eat before the food gets cold," Laura called out.
James snapped out of it and asked, "Laura, who exactly is this Sylvie?"
"I don't know. She just came over, asked if I was in the cosmetics business, and said she loved our products. So we chatted," Laura replied calmly.
"She didn't say anything weird?" James pressed.
"Nope, just cosmetics talk," Laura shook her head, then smiled at James. "Why are you so nervous? Do you know her?"
"No," James lied quickly.
"Then why are you so jumpy?" Laura asked, puzzled.
"I'm just worried she might be a scammer," James said, trying to sound casual.
"How could she be a scammer? She's a shareholder here!" Laura replied.
"Good, then," James said awkwardly, sitting down to eat.
He was baffled. Why was Sylvie pretending not to know him and cozying up to Laura? What was her angle?
What started as a decent day for James was now spiraling into suspicion and unease.
