Chapter 317 A Convincing Explanation
James took a deep breath and walked back into the restaurant.
He knew that since things had come to this, the worst outcome would be Laura finding out his identity.
If he didn't go in now, it might raise even more suspicion, so it was better to face it head-on.
After entering the restaurant, James casually found a seat and sat down.
Laura, after hesitating for a moment, also sat down next to James and softly asked, "James, what is going on here? Are these people really here because of you?"
"Of course not!" James shook his head directly and explained, "I think these people must have misunderstood my relationship with Charles, so they came over to curry favor with me. I don't actually have that much influence..."
"But..." Laura was no longer buying James's explanation and was about to say something.
At that moment, Willie walked up to James with a glass of wine and said with a smile, "Mr. Smith, you're finally back!"
James looked up at Willie and frowned, asking, "Do we know each other?"
Willie, hearing this, didn't feel awkward at all. Instead, he smiled at James and said softly, "Mr. Smith, you might not know me, but I know you. I'm Willie from Blue Horizon Capital."
"Oh, oh!" James nodded at Willie without saying much.
Willie seemed to understand James's intention and said in a low voice, "Mr. Smith, I came here today mainly to wish Mr. Hall a happy birthday. If there's nothing else, I'll take my leave."
"Alright!" James felt a long sigh of relief at Willie's words because he was really worried that Willie might say something he shouldn't.
Willie turned and smiled at Laura, then left directly.
After Willie left, the other business owners in the restaurant flocked to James, starting to chat with him.
After all, their purpose for coming here today was because of James.
So when they saw James return, they definitely wanted to say a few words to him to prove they had been here, and also to get familiar with him.
But what James didn't expect was that these people seemed to be doing it on purpose; they only talked briefly and didn't mention James's identity.
This made James feel much more at ease. Otherwise, if these people let something slip in front of Laura, it would be troublesome.
Laura, on the other hand, sat quietly next to James, her face full of confusion. She really couldn't figure out what was going on!
In the blink of an eye, more than an hour had passed.
The restaurant was bustling with people coming and going. After one group left, another would arrive.
And these people, after entering the restaurant, would just say a few words to Conrad and then rush to introduce themselves to James, making it seem like the birthday person today wasn't Conrad but James.
But Conrad was very happy at this moment because the people who came to wish him a happy birthday were basically the top 100 richest people in Riversong Province, each worth billions.
And these people were very generous, giving birthday gifts that were all very valuable.
Antiques, paintings, luxury cars, watches—almost everything you could think of. Conrad was so busy receiving gifts that he had no time to worry about anything else.
Kirk and Floyd stood there in a daze, unable to help but think of the gifts they had received on their birthdays compared to Conrad's. The difference was like night and day!
Joe was also busy, taking advantage of his status as James's father-in-law to chat with the business owners present.
These were people Joe usually wanted to meet but never had the chance to!
He definitely wanted to make the most of this opportunity today.
"James, come outside with me for a moment. I have something to say to you!"
Laura, feeling more and more uneasy, hesitated for a moment before standing up and saying to James.
James felt a trace of helplessness in his eyes when he heard Laura's words because he knew that some things were inevitable.
James followed Laura to the restaurant lobby.
Laura stopped in a quiet corner and asked James anxiously, "James, what is going on with these people today? Are you hiding something from me?"
In Laura's eyes, today's events had already exceeded her expectations. James had previously said he knew Charles because he had saved him, but just that connection shouldn't be enough to make all these business moguls come looking for James, right?
Moreover, the relationship between these business moguls and James was clearly more than just acquaintances. Laura could clearly feel that these people were here today to curry favor with James!
So Laura felt that there was definitely something fishy.
James looked at Laura, hesitated for two seconds, and then said softly, "Laura, actually, I don't know these people..."
"If you don't know these people, then why are they looking for you?" Laura replied softly.
"These people are looking for me mainly because of a project Charles has. The news that I got Charles to invest in your company has spread throughout Riversong Province, so people misunderstood my relationship with Charles." James sighed.
"Recently, Charles has a project that seems very profitable, and many people want to collaborate with him but can't find a way to contact him. They think that if they can find me and have me put in a good word for them with Charles, he will let them participate in the project. But actually, Charles wouldn't listen to me at all; he invested in your company simply because he saw its potential for growth..."
This excuse was something James had just thought up in his mind. He felt that only this explanation might convince Laura.
Whether Laura believed it or not was up to fate.
Laura looked at James, was silent for two seconds, and then said softly, "Is everything you said true?"
Seeing that Laura seemed somewhat convinced, James quickly added, "Of course it's true. If I had that much influence, why would I still be delivering food?"
"Then does your refusal of my grandfather last night have anything to do with these people?" Laura hesitated for a moment and then looked at James and asked.
"It has nothing to do with them!" James shook his head without thinking.
"Then why did you refuse my grandfather?" Laura asked, very puzzled.
"Because I don't want your family to look down on me. I want to support you with my own efforts!" James explained very seriously.
"You don't have to worry about my family looking down on you anymore. So many big shots came to see you at the same time; even the Hays Family couldn't pull that off!" Laura couldn't help but sigh as she looked at James.
At this moment, Laura felt much better because she thought James's explanation was reasonable. Moreover, the fact that James had invited so many big shots today had made the Hall Family very proud. As long as James wasn't hiding anything from her, Laura was very satisfied with this outcome.
And after this incident, Laura's impression of James had changed dramatically.
She thought that anyone with such connections would be very arrogant, but James remained so low-key. This alone was more than many people could achieve!
At this moment, Joe ran out of the restaurant and hurriedly shouted to Laura and James, "Laura, James, what are you two doing here? Mr. Ward from MediTech BioPharma is here and wants to meet James. You two should hurry back!"
"Dad, I got it!" Laura turned her head and replied softly, then looked at James and said, "James, let's go back."
"Alright!" James nodded lightly and walked back into the lobby.
