Chapter 356 Past Events
Inside the Hall Family villa.
When Laura heard Lily's words, she immediately reacted and quickly said, "Yeah, what does James inheriting the estate have to do with me? Why does James have to marry me?"
"I think the person who left the inheritance to James must have something to do with you. Otherwise, why would they specifically require James to marry you?" Lily analyzed.
Laura also felt that Lily's analysis made sense; otherwise, these things wouldn't make any sense at all.
So she nodded lightly and then said softly, "I think so too..."
"Do you know who left the inheritance to James?" Lily quickly asked.
"I was so angry at the time that I didn't have the mood to ask James about these things," Laura replied helplessly.
Lily rolled her eyes and then said softly, "Then why don't you call James now and ask him to clarify things?"
"Call James? I haven't even decided whether to forgive him yet!" Laura said softly.
"If you're too embarrassed to call James, then I'll do it!" Lily said as she took out her phone, ready to call James.
"No need, I know someone who should understand this matter better than James!" Laura quickly stopped Lily and continued, "It was Charles who arranged for James to inherit the estate, and it was also Charles who signed the contract with James. I think he should know more about this matter than James!"
As she spoke, Laura took out her phone and found Charles' number, dialing it.
The phone rang twice before Charles answered and asked softly, "Miss Hall, what can I do for you?"
"Mr. Wilson, I want to know what my connection is to the inheritance James received. Why does James have to marry me to inherit it?" Laura asked directly.
Charles was stunned for a moment upon hearing this, then said softly, "It seems Mr. Smith has already told you everything, hasn't he?"
"Yes, James has told me everything!" Laura nodded.
"In that case, I won't hide anything from you. The inheritance Mr. Smith needs to inherit was left to him by Willard!" Charles said slowly.
"Willard?"
Laura was stunned upon hearing this, a strange look flashing in her eyes.
"Miss Hall, you should have heard this name before, right?" Charles smiled faintly.
"I remember helping an old man get home when I was in middle school. He said he didn't have money for a plane ticket, so I used my allowance to buy him one," Laura recalled vaguely.
"That's right, it was him!" Charles replied faintly and continued, "Back then, Willard's business failed, and he was heavily in debt, wandering the streets. It was the dead of winter, and Willard had no money and was being chased by loan sharks. Fortunately, after wandering the streets of Lumina City for a few days, he met a little girl."
His voice softened." The little girl, after hearing Willard's story, generously gave him her allowance so he could go home. But when Willard returned to the Edwards family, they didn't welcome him and refused to provide him with food and shelter. It was James' grandfather who took him in, and because of that, Willard was able to achieve what he has today!"
Laura's expression was one of disbelief after hearing Charles' words.
She never imagined that the old man she had helped as a child would become such a significant figure!
"Years later, Willard still remembered the kindness you and Mr. Smith's grandfather showed him. Since James' grandfather only had one daughter, Willard attributed this kindness to James. If it weren't for you two, Willard might have died long ago, and even if he survived, he wouldn't have been able to regain his former glory. So, Willard believed that his success was due to you two. Moreover, since Willard had no children, he decided to leave all his inheritance to you and Mr. Smith after his death!"
Charles paused and then continued, "But later, Willard worried that you two might argue over the inheritance. After all, facing such a large fortune, it's hard for anyone to stay calm. So, Willard came up with a perfect solution: Mr. Smith would inherit the estate, but he must marry you, and you must genuinely be with Mr. Smith. This way, the inheritance would belong to both of you, and as a married couple, you wouldn't argue or have any disputes over it!"
"Was it also Willard's rule that James couldn't reveal his identity to me?" Laura quickly asked.
"Yes, Willard was worried that you would be with Mr. Smith just for the money, so he stipulated that James couldn't reveal his identity. After all, if you were with Mr. Smith just for the money, it would waste Willard's efforts!" Charles said slowly.
"So that's how it is!" Laura suddenly realized. At this moment, she finally understood the whole story.
Although it sounded a bit unbelievable, Laura felt that Charles' explanation was quite credible.
After all, she did help an old man named Willard when she was a child, and Charles could accurately recount this event, which meant it was likely true.
"Then who was the woman at The Golden Elm Bistro today?" Laura hesitated and continued to ask.
"She is Matthew's sister, Savannah. Matthew is Willard's relative. Legally, Matthew is Willard's only heir, but Willard didn't have a good relationship with the Edwards family, so he didn't leave the inheritance to Matthew but to Mr. Smith. Matthew knew that if James revealed his identity to you, he would lose his right to inherit the estate, so he had Savannah come to provoke James!" Charles explained patiently.
"So that's how it is!" Laura took a deep breath upon hearing this.
"Miss Hall, there's actually one more thing I need your help with!" Charles suddenly said.
"What is it?" Laura was stunned and asked, somewhat puzzled.
