Chapter 249 Everyone's Ridicule
Laura's face turned red with anger when she saw Leander and his crew making fun of James. She was about to step in, but James stopped her with a hand.
James squinted at Leander and asked, "Is your general manager at Evergreen Investment named Lucian Reed?"
Leander looked surprised and then frowned. "Do you know Mr. Reed?"
Thalassa and Elowen looked just as confused. To them, James was just a broke nobody who couldn't possibly know someone like that.
Laura was puzzled too.
"Nope," James said with a grin. "Just heard the name before."
"Oh, I see! I figured someone like you wouldn't know Leander's boss!" Thalassa chimed in quickly.
"Leander's boss?" James smirked. Thalassa had no clue that Leander's real boss was standing right in front of her.
Sure, Lucian was the general manager, but the actual chairman was Charles. And guess what? James was Lucian's boss!
Lucian only owned 30% of Evergreen Investment, while James held a whopping 60%.
At the banquet at Fairy Lake Resort, Lucian had to wait over an hour just to talk to James!
James dropped Lucian's name to make Leander back off, but it seemed like Leander didn't catch on.
"So, what are you studying, James? If it's finance, you could work for my company after you graduate. How about a job with a monthly salary of over ten grand?" Leander said, pretending to be all friendly.
His words were a sneaky way to put James down while showing off his own success.
"No thanks," James replied coolly.
"It's a rare opportunity. Are you sure you don't want it? After you graduate, finding a job like this will be nearly impossible. But with just a word from Leander, you could easily earn that much. Once you secure a permanent position, earning fifty or sixty grand a month won't be a problem!" Thalassa said sarcastically.
"When James graduates, he'll work at my company, so you don't need to worry about his job!" Laura said with a frown, pulling James away.
Laura looked pissed. James was her fiancé, and these people were humiliating him right in front of her.
"If Mr. Smith is going to work for Miss Hall, then I won't interfere. Working under your fiancée should be much easier!" Leander sneered.
"Leander, just say James will rely on a woman in the future. Why beat around the bush?" Dorian laughed.
Thalassa and Elowen joined in the laughter.
James shot a glare at Leander.
Leander had no clue that the more he enjoyed himself now, the worse things would get for him later.
He was shamelessly mocking James, but James only needed one phone call to turn Leander's world upside down.
"James, let's go!" Laura said, pulling him away.
"Laura, don't leave yet. Leander just booked a restaurant. Let's have dinner before we go!" Thalassa called out, trying to stop them.
"You go ahead. James and I are leaving!" Laura shouted back without even turning around.
"Come on. Uncle and Auntie are already at the restaurant. It wouldn't look good if you don't bring James over, right?" Thalassa insisted.
Laura's face fell. She hadn't expected Thalassa to involve her parents.
Thalassa looked smug, clearly not planning to let things end so easily. She wanted to humiliate James in front of The Hall Family and Laura's parents, so she had already called them to the restaurant.
"Thalassa, why did you invite my parents to dinner with your fiancé?" Laura shouted angrily.
"Oh, since your fiancé is here, why not have a lively gathering?" Thalassa replied with a smile. "Let's hurry up. If we're late, they'll be upset."
Laura glared at Thalassa, furious. She couldn't believe Thalassa would go this far. Humiliating James here was one thing, but doing it in front of her parents was a whole new level of low.
"Laura, are you too ashamed of James to go over?" Dorian taunted.
"Are you kidding?" Laura snapped, her expression hardening.
She knew that if she kept refusing, it might affect James's mood. So, she pulled James along and said, "James, let's go. If someone's treating us, we might as well eat!"
James glanced at Laura, his face serious.
He had been hesitant to visit Willowbrook because he feared something like this would happen, but he didn't expect The Hall Family to be so ruthless.
If his identity caused Laura and her parents to be embarrassed, James would be very unwilling.
But he couldn't reveal his identity to Laura yet. Otherwise, he would make Leander understand that he had messed with the wrong person!
Leander and Thalassa got into their Range Rover and drove off.
James and Laura got into their Mercedes, while Elowen got into Dorian's BMW.
The three cars headed to the restaurant.
"James, I'm sorry. Thalassa has always been like this. Don't take anything she says to heart," Laura said softly while driving.
"I should be the one apologizing. I'm the one making you lose face," James replied, feeling guilty.
"No. You're my fiancé. As long as I think you're fine, you're still the best in my heart!" Laura quickly reassured him.
James felt a warm rush of emotion after hearing Laura's words.
