Chapter 385 Why are you helping James?

In the conference room.

Matthew couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the vote count. It was a tough pill to swallow.

He had sacrificed Savannah to expose James's identity in front of Laura, all to fight for the inheritance.

Back at Conrad's birthday bash, the reason so many CEOs showed up to congratulate Conrad was because of the rumors Matthew had spread.

To Matthew, James was just a nobody, not worth his time.

As Willard's direct grandson and the first legal heir, he felt it was his right to claim Willard's inheritance.

But he never saw Charles and Eldon messing up his plans, and now he was fuming!

"I asked you a question! Are you all deaf and mute? Didn't you promise to help me? Why are you backing James now?"

Matthew grabbed one of the lawyers by the collar, his face twisted in anger.

"Mr. Edwards, the votes are in. Please don't interfere with our work!" Eldon stood up and shouted at Matthew.

Matthew was taken aback for a moment, then he gritted his teeth and said, "Fine, you guys are tough. You're all against me, huh? Just wait, I'll make you regret this! James is nothing but trash. I can't believe you're helping him!"

James stood up and slapped Matthew across the face.

Matthew was stunned, then glared at James with red eyes and shouted, "You bastard! How dare you hit me?"

"So what if I did? Call me trash again, and you'll never see Savannah again!" James said, his face expressionless.

"You—!" Matthew suddenly remembered Savannah was still in James's hands. If he inherited the estate today, losing Savannah wouldn't matter. But if he didn't get the estate and lost Savannah, it would be a disaster!

"If you want to see Savannah again, you'd better leave this room now!" James said in a low voice.

Matthew hesitated, then gritted his teeth and said, "Fine, I'm leaving. Just wait, all of you!"

He turned and stormed out of the conference room.

After Matthew left, Eldon slowly stood up, looked at James and the others, and said, "Now I'll announce the arbitration result. After a unanimous vote by the twelve lawyers, Mr. Smith still has the right to inherit Willard's estate."

Charles let out a sigh of relief, his conflicted heart finally at ease.

"Mr. Smith, although you've regained the right to inherit and manage the estate, you haven't officially inherited the estate yet. You need to establish a marital relationship with Miss Hall to smoothly inherit the estate!" Eldon said gently to James.

James couldn't help but glance at Laura after hearing Eldon's words.

"Mr. Wilson, is there anything else I need to do?" Laura asked Charles, not even looking at James.

Charles was taken aback for a moment, then said, "Miss Hall, the arbitration meeting is over, but I think there might be some misunderstanding between you and Mr. Smith. If you two have..."

"I have no misunderstanding with him. If the arbitration meeting is over, I'll leave now!" Laura replied coldly, then stood up and said to Lily, "Lily, let's go!"

Lily sighed helplessly, glanced at James, then stood up and followed Laura out of the conference room.

James sat there, watching Laura leave, feeling helpless. He knew Laura hadn't forgiven him yet. After all, he had deceived her for so long, and it was understandable she was still upset.

"Mr. Smith, what are you still doing here? Go explain to Miss Hall!" Charles shouted anxiously at James.

James snapped out of it, quickly stood up, and chased after Laura.

But by the time he got to the elevator door, Laura and Lily were already inside, heading to the first floor.

"Mr. Smith, there's another elevator over there!" Charles quickly pointed out.

James hurriedly pressed the button for the other elevator, and as soon as the doors opened, he rushed inside.

Moments later, James, Laura, and Lily had all left in the elevator.

The conference room was now just Charles, Eldon, and a few other lawyers.

"You all can leave now. I have something to discuss with Mr. Wilson," Eldon said softly to the other lawyers.

"Okay!" They quickly nodded, gathered their things, and left the room.

Once the lawyers were gone, Eldon turned to Charles with a half-smile. "Willard never said that to you, did he?"

"What do you mean?" Charles asked with a smile.

"Don't play dumb with me. Willard never said that to you, and he would never allow you to participate in our vote. Otherwise, why would he need us?" Eldon said in a low voice.

"Then why did you still help me?" Charles asked curiously.

Eldon glanced at Charles and didn't answer directly. Instead, he softly said, "I don't understand why you're helping James. What's your purpose?"

"So you think I need a purpose for everything I do?" Charles said with a smile.

"Charles, others may not understand you, but I do. Tell me the truth, why did you help James today?" Eldon asked seriously, dropping his previous gentle demeanor.
