Chapter 230 A New Round of Inspections
Laura had planned to go with James to get their marriage certificate, but the whole Jennifer fiasco messed everything up.
James's hopes of getting the marriage license with Laura were crushed. Now that Laura had forgiven him, he felt he had to act fast and get that certificate before something else went wrong.
"Marriage certificate?"
Laura was taken aback when she heard James mention it.
"Yeah, we agreed to this, remember?" James said, his excitement barely contained.
"I did agree, but after what happened with your ex, I changed my mind," Laura replied, her face expressionless.
"Changed your mind?" James looked confused and frowned. "Didn't I explain everything? Jennifer set this up. Those photos were photoshopped by someone she hired. I'm the victim here!"
"I know Jennifer orchestrated it, and I know you're the victim, but I realized I was too hasty regarding the certificate. I don't know you well enough. I need some time to observe you. If everything checks out, then we can get married," Laura said with a smile.
James was stunned and frustrated. He was so close to getting the certificate, but now this. What made it worse was that he was also a victim in all this.
Now, Laura wanted to reassess him because of the incident. If he passed, great. If not, it could be a problem.
"So, what do I need to do to pass this assessment?" James asked, feeling helpless.
"That depends on my mood. Just behave well, and if you do, we'll get the certificate," Laura said.
Laura's main reason for holding off was that she felt they didn't know each other well enough. Even if they got the certificate, there could be many issues down the road.
She decided to spend more time with James first. If everything seemed fine, she'd consider it.
The last time she agreed to get it was because James had helped her company with a big problem, and she impulsively thought of getting the certificate with him.
But now that Laura had cooled off, she realized she had been too impulsive and decided against getting the certificate with James.
James looked at Laura, feeling pretty helpless. What was supposed to be a good thing had turned into a mess. He didn't like it, but he knew forcing Laura to get the certificate wouldn't do any good.
After all, the inheritance contract clearly stated that James not only had to marry Laura but also had to make her fall in love with him willingly.
"Alright then, if you don't want to get the marriage certificate now, I'll respect that. Just let me know when you change your mind," James said calmly, opening the car door to leave.
He had come today mainly to clear up the situation with Jennifer. Now that everything was out in the open, there was no reason for him to stick around.
"James," Laura called out as she saw him getting ready to leave.
James paused and turned back to her. "What's up? Anything else?"
Laura hesitated, biting her lip. "Are you leaving?"
"Yeah, I came to explain the situation with Jennifer. Now that the misunderstanding is cleared up, I won't keep you from work. You should get back to the office," James nodded.
"Well..." Laura hesitated, then said softly, "I said I needed to observe you for a while. It doesn't mean anything else. I just feel we don't know each other well enough and need time to get familiar. Do you understand?"
Laura was worried her previous words might have hurt James, so she quickly explained.
"I understand," James nodded, getting what she meant.
"This time, it was my fault. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions before knowing the truth. So, I decided to treat you to a meal as an apology. What do you think?" Laura hesitated, then continued.
"You're treating me to a meal?" James asked, surprised. He hadn't expected Laura to invite him to dinner.
"Yeah, I know a great restaurant, but I never had the chance to go. Since I have nothing to do today, I'll take you there," Laura said with a smile.
"Didn't you say you had an important meeting at the office?" James asked softly.
Laura smiled awkwardly, then said, "Actually, it can wait. I'll have lunch with you first and then hold the meeting in the afternoon."
"Alright then!" James quickly agreed. He had nothing planned for the afternoon, and since Laura was inviting him, he wasn't going to refuse.
"Let's go to Dawnlight Square. My friend recommended a restaurant there," Laura said softly after James got back in the car.
"Okay!" James nodded and drove towards Dawnlight Square.
