Chapter 270 What's your relationship with Atticus?
Laura strolled over to James's room and gave the door a gentle knock.
"Who is it?" James asked inside.
"James, you awake?" Laura asked softly from the hallway.
"Yeah!" James quickly replied, rushing to open the door.
"You got back so late last night, I thought you'd still be out cold!" Laura said, eyeing James.
"I just woke up a bit ago!" James grinned, thinking she was there to get him moving.
"Oh, did I wake you? Want to catch a few more winks?" Laura asked, feeling a bit awkward.
"It's all good, come on in. I'll just freshen up real quick!" James stepped aside to let her in.
Laura walked in, glanced around, and asked, "So, how's the hotel treating you? Comfortable?"
"It's awesome. I've never stayed anywhere this nice before!" James replied with a smile.
"That's great!" Laura nodded and plopped down on the bed.
James noticed something was off with her. After a moment, he asked, "Everything okay? You seem a bit off today."
Laura hesitated, then said softly, "It's nothing, really. I just wanted to ask you something..."
"What is it?" James asked, still smiling.
"The vase my dad broke last night... it was real, wasn't it?" Laura asked bluntly.
"The vase was real?" James's face turned serious.
Only he and Atticus knew about the vase, so how did Laura find out?
"Yeah, the vase my dad broke yesterday was real!" Laura said seriously.
"Why do you think that? Atticus said it was fake last night!" James replied, frowning.
"Even though Mr. Hayes said the vase was fake, he donated another vase to the Lumina City Museum this morning. If the vase last night was fake, the one in his restaurant should be too. But all the experts in Lumina City say that the vase is real. Get what I'm saying?" Laura explained her doubts.
James felt a wave of frustration and silently cursed Atticus.
The issue was supposed to be settled, but Atticus donated the vase.
Why make such a fuss? Now Laura was onto something.
James's face tensed up as he tried to figure out how to explain this to Laura.
Laura noticed his reaction, which only confirmed her suspicions.
"James, the vase my dad broke was real, wasn't it? You and Atticus must've made some deal, so he said it was fake, right?" Laura asked seriously.
James's face showed a hint of helplessness.
Laura was too sharp; she didn't miss a thing.
"James, am I right?" Laura pressed, seeing his silence as confirmation.
Realizing there was no point in lying, James nodded and said softly, "Yeah, the vase your dad broke was real."
"It was real?" Laura stared at him, shocked.
Even though she had guessed it, hearing James admit it was still a shock.
"The vase was real, but I knew you couldn't come up with twenty million dollars, so I had Atticus say it was fake so you could leave without worry," James explained calmly.
He was trying to figure out how to explain this to Laura.
If he admitted he was actually Atticus's boss, all his previous efforts would be for nothing.
But if he made up another excuse, Laura wouldn't buy it either.
James was torn, not sure how to smooth things over.
"James, you're not lying to me, are you?" Laura asked, eyes wide with shock.
"At this point, do you think I need to lie?" James replied helplessly.
"But how do you know someone like Atticus? What's your relationship with him? Why does he listen to you?" Laura asked, now even more confused.
James looked at her, unsure how to explain.
"When we were at the restaurant, Atticus was so nice to us because of you, right?" Laura continued.
James nodded helplessly.
"So what's your relationship with Atticus?" Laura asked, puzzled.
James took a deep breath and said calmly, "I've known Atticus for a long time. The reason he sent us wine at the restaurant was to please me."
