Chapter 376 Matthew's Trick

"There's less than half an hour left. Even if you call Laura, she probably won't come, right?" Matthew suddenly stood up, his face cold as he spoke to James.

"Whether I call or not, what does it have to do with you?" James looked up at him, his expression indifferent.

"It has nothing to do with me, but I know for sure that Laura won't come!" Matthew's smile turned sinister.

James felt a chill run down his spine. He stood up and walked over to Matthew, his voice cold. "What do you mean by that?"

"Nothing much," Matthew replied with a smile. "Just that Laura definitely won't come today, so you might as well give up and stop wasting your energy."

James took a deep breath, then grabbed Matthew by the collar. "Matthew, did you do something to Laura?"

"Calm down," Matthew mocked. "What does Laura have to do with you now? You can't even protect yourself, yet you still have time to worry about others. You're really something."

In fact, Matthew was just stalling for time. He was worried that if James's call actually worked and Laura came, she might change the situation.

So he thought he should do something to stop James from making that call. The best outcome would be to wait until the half-hour was up and Laura didn't show up.

"Laura is my fiancée. How do I not have the right to be concerned? Tell me, did you do something to Laura?" James's eyes widened, his voice rising.

Shaking his head, Matthew said disdainfully, "You consider Laura your fiancée, but does Laura consider you her fiancé? If she really cared about you, would she not have come to see you by now? Is your brain full of crap? Can't you figure this out?"

James was stunned by Matthew's words.

"I've never seen an idiot like you. A loser is just a loser!" Seeing James silent, Matthew continued his mockery.

"Stop talking nonsense. I'm asking you, did you do something to Laura?" James's eyes were red, his voice shaking.

Matthew showed a playful smile. "Do you think I did something to Laura? If you don't want to see anything happen to her, you'd better take your dirty hands off me. Otherwise, if something really happens to her, you'll regret it."

James slowly released his grip on Matthew's collar, his eyes red.

Matthew showed a disdainful smile, then tidied his clothes and said, "That's more like it. James, you need a reality check. A loser like you can never beat me! Just because people call you Mr. Smith, you think you're some rich heir? Without this inheritance, you wouldn't even be worth a dog to me, yet here you are, worrying about others' safety..."

Before Matthew could finish, James's fist connected with his face.

Matthew's vision went black, and he stumbled back, falling to the ground.

James ran over and stomped on Matthew's head, glaring down at him. "What did you do to Laura? Where is she?"

"James, are you out of your mind? You hit me?"

Matthew never expected James to go this far.

"Stop talking nonsense. What did you do to Laura?" James's voice was filled with rage.

"James, get your foot off me, or I'll make sure you spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair!" Matthew shouted, humiliated and furious. It was the first time in his life being treated like this.

"I'm asking you, what did you do to Laura!" James was too angry to realize this was just a ploy by Matthew to stall for time.

"Mr. Smith—" Charles quickly stepped in, trying to pull James off Matthew.

"Let go of me! This guy definitely did something to Laura, or how would he know she wouldn't come today?" James shouted at Charles.

"Mr. Smith, Matthew is just trying to deceive you! I've already sent Terry to Willowbrook to protect Miss Hall. If she were in any real danger, Terry would inform me immediately, so you don't need to worry about her safety," Charles explained, sounding a bit helpless.

James turned to Charles, his voice desperate. "Are you telling the truth?"

"Of course it's true!" Charles nodded quickly.

James took a deep breath and slowly moved his foot off Matthew.

Matthew immediately stood up, shouting, "James, just you wait! Once I get this inheritance back, I'll deal with you myself! I'll kill you with my own hands!"

Knowing Laura was safe, James felt calmer and ignored Matthew. He turned to Charles. "I'm going to call Laura right now!"

"Mr. Smith, there's no need." Charles shook his head gently.

"Why not?" James asked, stunned.

"There's less than ten minutes left. Even if you convince Miss Hall, there's not enough time for her to come here!" Charles said helplessly.

James's face fell as he realized Matthew had been stalling for time.

Despite the beating, Matthew still looked smug, wiping the blood from his mouth and smiling at James.

Matthew was already planning his revenge, confident that once he got the inheritance back, he'd make James pay.
