Chapter 228 Things Are Not What You Think

At nine in the morning, James showed up at the entrance of Laura's company, clutching a bouquet of roses, just waiting for her to show up.

He'd tried calling her a bunch of times before coming, but she kept hanging up on him.

So now, he figured the best way to handle this was to just wait for her at the company entrance.

But as soon as he got there, he started regretting taking Sylvie's advice. Holding a big bunch of roses, he felt like a total idiot standing outside the building.

Everyone walking by on their way to work gave him weird looks and made a few comments.

But it wasn't the stares that bothered James the most. What really got to him was the group of girls that had gathered around, waiting to see who he was there for.

"Hey handsome, you here to confess to someone?"

"Yeah, you've been waiting a while. Where's the lucky lady? Those roses must've cost a lot, huh?"

"You seem pretty dedicated! Who's the girl? Maybe I know her."

The girls kept chatting with him, but James wasn't interested. He just kept his eyes on the street.

Ten minutes later, Laura's white Mercedes finally pulled up in front of the building.

Inside the car, Laura bit her lip when she saw James standing there.

She couldn't get over the fact that James had slept with another woman; she was filled with disgust. So she hit the gas, planning to drive right past him.

But James didn't care about the speeding car and ran into the middle of the road, holding out his hand to stop her.

With a screech, Laura slammed on the brakes, then got out of the car.

Laura looked stunning today. She wore a white blouse that hugged her chest and a black business skirt that showed off her long, fair legs. She had on black high heels, looking both sexy and professional.

Even though James had seen plenty of beautiful women like Sylvie lately, Laura was still in a league of her own, especially with that captivating aura of hers.

"James, are you crazy? Why are you stopping my car?" Laura walked up to him in her high heels, glanced at the roses in his hand, and said with no expression.

The girls around them were shocked when they saw Laura get out of the car.

"So, this guy's trying to confess to Miss Hall. How shameless! How could someone like Miss Hall be with him? Look at him!"

"Yeah, Miss Hall is famously aloof. So many rich kids in Lumina City have tried to pursue her and got shot down. This guy thinks he stands a chance? He's just asking for humiliation."

"Seriously, he's got some nerve. He doesn't deserve Miss Hall at all!"

The girls started whispering among themselves.

"What are you all talking about? This man is Miss Hall's boyfriend. Miss Hall admitted it herself!" the receptionist from Laura's company suddenly chimed in.

"What did you say?"

"This guy is Miss Hall's boyfriend?"

"Are you kidding? How could Miss Hall like someone like him?"

"Didn't Miss Hall even reject Donovan? How could she be with this guy?"

Everyone's expressions turned even more incredulous.

The receptionist shot back, "Don't underestimate Mr. Smith. He's pretty impressive. If it weren't for his help, our company might have gone under long ago!"

She remembered vividly the day James brought Charles, so she had a good impression of him.

Meanwhile, James looked at Laura, a hint of nervousness in his eyes.

Before coming, he had thought about how to explain everything to Laura.

But now that he saw her, he felt at a loss for words.

"Laura, about what happened that day..."

James started to explain.

"James, save it. I've already heard from Nancy about you. That girl is Jennifer, your ex-girlfriend. You threatened her to get back together by spreading your intimate photos at school. You also have unclear relationships with other women and threatened Jennifer's boyfriend to drop out. You're disgusting." Laura rattled off before James could get a word in.

James looked at Laura, feeling devastated.

He couldn't understand why Nancy always had to interfere. Every time he tried to do something, Nancy would ruin it.

"Laura, it's not what you think..." James quickly said.

"James, I don't care what happened. I've made up my mind. Let's just be a couple in name only. I don't want to interfere in your private life, and please don't interfere in mine. Do whatever you want; it has nothing to do with me!" Laura replied coldly, then started walking towards the company.

James hesitated as he watched Laura. He knew she wasn't in the mood for his explanation, and with so many people watching, he was too embarrassed to go into details.

So without saying a word, James grabbed Laura's arm and walked towards the Mercedes.

"James, what are you doing? Let go of me!" Laura shouted, her expression agitated.

But James ignored her struggles, pulling her to the Mercedes and pushing her inside.

James then opened the door, sat in the driver's seat, and started the car without thinking.

Everyone present was stunned, watching in shock as the Mercedes disappeared from their sight.

"Is this a kidnapping?" one girl stammered after coming to her senses.
