Chapter 387 Sharon's Thoughts
James had never really thought about things from Laura's point of view.
He figured she was mad because he lied to her.
But the truth was, Laura didn't actually care if he lied. What really mattered to her more was whether his feelings were real or if he was just using her to get the estate.
And now, no matter what James said, Laura wasn't buying it.
"Laura, I really like you, and I want to be with you!" James said, looking at her with all the sincerity he could muster.
"Sure, I know you want to be with me. But is it because of the inheritance or because you actually care about me?" Laura asked, staring him down.
"It's because I care about you!" James replied without missing a beat.
"Alright then, if that's true, go tell Charles you want to give up the inheritance. If you can do that, I'll get back together with you right away. Deal?" Laura stopped struggling and said firmly.
James was taken aback, hesitation flickering in his eyes.
Laura saw it immediately and said coldly, "James, you say you love me, but when I ask you to give up the inheritance, you hesitate."
She took a deep breath, her eyes welling up. "So you don't love me as much as you say. You're the first guy I've ever liked. I love you, and I was ready to date you, to be your wife, even have kids with you. I don't care if you're rich or not because money doesn't matter. What matters is that you love me. But now, I can't be sure if you really do. If I'm not more important than the inheritance, then why should I be with you?"
James just stared at her, speechless.
"I think you need to calm down and figure out what you really want," Laura said, looking at him.
"What do I want?" James muttered to himself.
Laura shook off his hand and walked towards the car.
By the time James snapped out of it, Laura and Lily were already gone.
"Yeah, what do I really want?" James sighed and headed back to the Innovation Hub Tower.
Just as James was about to go back, he heard a mocking voice behind him. "Oh, look who it is! James! What happened? Got caught pretending to be a rich kid?"
He turned around to see Evelyn.
"What are you doing here?" James asked, his voice low.
"Why can't I be here? You looked so serious confessing to that pretty girl. Honestly, if I didn't know you were a broke loser, I might've fallen for it. You were pretending to be a rich kid buying a house this morning, and now you're here trying to fool a rich girl. You're something else, but it looks like no one bought it!"
Evelyn was mocking James, even though she hadn't actually heard what he and Laura were talking about. She was just making assumptions based on how they looked.
James shot Evelyn a faint look. He wasn't in the mood to argue and walked straight into the Innovation Hub Tower.
Just then, Sharon walked out of the building and spotted James.
"Mr. Smith..." She wanted to greet him, but he didn't even glance her way and kept walking.
He wasn't in the mood to deal with Sharon either.
"James, don't go! Why are you in such a hurry? Let's have a chat!"
Evelyn called after him, still chasing him into the building.
But when she saw Sharon, her cousin, she stopped and linked arms with her, smiling. "Sharon, are you off work?"
"Do you know Mr. Smith?" Sharon asked, surprised to see Evelyn talking to James.
"You mean that guy?" Evelyn pouted.
"Yeah, how do you know Mr. Smith?" Sharon asked again, still in disbelief.
"Mr. Smith? That guy's name is James. He went to the same school as Paul. He's just a broke loser who likes to pretend he's rich and fool people. I think there's something seriously wrong with him!"
Evelyn replied, then turned to Sharon and asked, "How do you know him? And why do you call him Mr. Smith? Did he try to fool you too? Let me tell you, James isn't rich. He's just a poor delivery guy. Don't let him trick you, or you'll regret it."
Sharon took a deep breath and asked, "Why do you say James is a fraud?"
Evelyn blinked and looked at Sharon. "Today, James went to the Harmony Realty Group sales office and said he wanted to buy all the remaining houses. Isn't that ridiculous? Those houses are worth over a billion dollars, and he said he wanted to buy them all. And the people at the sales office actually believed him. I really don't know what they were thinking!"
Sharon looked at Evelyn and smiled helplessly, thinking to herself that James could probably buy all the houses in Lumina City, let alone a few at a sales office.
As the new chairman of Golden Peak Group, even someone as important as Charles had to show respect to James. But to Evelyn, he was just a fraud. Sharon didn't know how to explain it to her.
But Sharon was smart. She knew James didn't like to reveal his identity, and Charles had also emphasized this point, so few people at Golden Peak Group mentioned James's identity.
Moreover, Sharon had her own little thoughts. She felt that the more people knew about James's identity, the more competition she would have.
So she didn't plan to tell Evelyn the truth about James, but she could use Evelyn to get closer to him.
