Chapter 353 You've Been Using Me All Along
The Golden Elm Bistro, inside a private room.
James looked at Laura in front of him and decided to tell her everything.
After all, Laura was also a participant in this matter, so she had the right to know.
"I originally thought Charles was just joking with me, but when I arrived at his company, I realized that all of this was actually true!"
James paused for a moment, then continued, "And the inheritance waiting for me to claim is a fortune beyond imagination. However, Charles also told me that if I want to inherit this fortune, I need to fulfill one condition..."
"What condition?" Laura curiously asked upon hearing this.
"That I must marry you!" James answered softly.
Laura was stunned, her expression becoming dazed.
After a while, she finally reacted and asked, "You mean, if you want to inherit this fortune, you must marry me, right?"
"Yes!" James nodded lightly and then smiled bitterly, continuing, "When I first heard this condition, I also found it unbelievable. I didn't understand the connection between inheriting the fortune and marrying you, but that's what the contract stipulates. Moreover, you must willingly marry me."
"So you approached me just to inherit the fortune, right?" Laura asked James incredulously.
"No." James shook his head lightly and continued, "It was Charles who arranged our meeting, and to ensure I could inherit the fortune smoothly, Charles even made you my fiancée!"
Laura stared at James with wide, watery eyes, her face full of shock.
She never expected that her engagement to James was orchestrated by Charles, and that the person who helped her father's company out of trouble was also Charles.
"If I want to inherit this fortune, I must marry you. But there's another condition: as long as we haven't actually gotten married, I can't reveal my identity to you. If you find out my true identity, I will lose the right to inherit the fortune!" James continued, looking at Laura.
After hearing this, Laura couldn't help but take a deep breath, her chest heaving. Only now did she understand the truth behind her engagement to James.
James becoming her fiancé was not a coincidence; it was all part of a plan, and Laura had been kept in the dark.
"No wonder the manager at Moonlight Garden was so respectful to you when we first met!"
"No wonder your ex-girlfriend was willing to ruin her own reputation to win you back!"
"No wonder Charles was willing to invest in my company, and Donovan was so afraid of you after learning your identity!"
"No wonder the general manager of Fairy Lake Resort, Atticus, gave you so much face, calling a real vase a fake!"
"No wonder so many company CEOs came to visit you at my grandfather's birthday banquet!"
Laura shouted at James, her voice becoming hoarse and tears welling up in her eyes, as she finally understood everything.
She couldn't imagine how foolish she had been to be deceived by James for so long!
She felt as if her world was collapsing.
"Laura..." Seeing Laura like this, James felt extremely guilty and wanted to explain.
"So they did all this because they already knew your true identity, while I, as your fiancée, knew nothing. I thought you were just an ordinary student. James, you're such a good actor!" Laura shouted coldly, gritting her teeth.
"I didn't intentionally want to hide it from you, but the inheritance contract had such a stipulation!" James replied helplessly.
"So you're saying that to inherit the fortune, you chose to deceive me, and I was just a tool for you, right?" Laura shouted at James, her expression agitated.
"At first, we had no feelings for each other. I knew someone like you wouldn't like me, and you only agreed to the engagement to help your father's company. We were just using each other. But as we spent more time together, I realized I might really like you, and I genuinely wanted to marry you." James explained sincerely.
Laura couldn't help but laugh coldly, then said, "You really like me? Don't joke with me! You just wanted to use me to inherit the fortune. If it weren't for the fortune, would you still treat me like this?"
"I..." James was stunned, not knowing what to say, as he indeed approached Laura with that intention initially.
If it weren't for the inheritance, James wouldn't have gotten so close to Laura.
"In the end, you don't love me at all. You just wanted to use me to get the fortune!" Laura shouted at James.
James hesitated for two seconds, then smiled helplessly and said softly, "Think whatever you want. Anyway, I have nothing now, and I'm about to become a pauper, while you're still the heiress of The Hall Family. If I have nothing, you probably wouldn't stay with me, right? So all of this doesn't matter anymore!"
Upon hearing this, Laura stood up without thinking and slapped James, then shouted, "James, think with your conscience. When did I ever say I was with you for money? When did I ever say I'd leave you if you had no money?"
