Chapter 371 I Still Have a Trump Card
Upon hearing James's words, Eldon immediately stopped in his tracks.
Then he turned to James, with a somewhat puzzled expression, and asked, "Mr. Smith, what did you just say?"
"I said you don't need to waste time verifying this video. I was there at the time, and I can prove that the video is real, and those words were indeed spoken by me, not fabricated by them," James said calmly to Eldon.
Eldon was stunned by James's words, his face showing indescribable shock.
Because he never expected that James would voluntarily admit to this matter.
Charles was even more devastated, and he whispered to James, "Mr. Smith, why did you admit it voluntarily?"
"Why shouldn't I admit it? The video is real, and I have no reason to lie to you!" James replied indifferently.
"But..."
Charles looked at James speechlessly, not knowing what to say for a moment.
"Mr. Smith, even if you admit it now, we still need to check this video. After all, we can't be sure if you're being coerced into saying these things!"
As the head of Willard's legal team, Eldon always adhered to principles of fairness and justice in everything he did.
So in this matter, he couldn't tolerate any deviation, and all results had to be based on evidence.
Therefore, Eldon wouldn't draw conclusions just based on what James said.
Eldon picked up the hard drive and then said to everyone present, "Our legal team needs to verify the authenticity of this video, so please wait a moment!"
"No problem, take your time. I have plenty of time now!" Matthew said smugly after hearing Eldon's words, then he directly led his people out of the conference room.
Charles hesitated for a moment, then said to James, "Mr. Smith, let's go out too!"
"Okay." James nodded lightly, then got up and followed Charles out of the conference room.
After leaving the conference room, James found Matthew sitting complacently in the boss's chair in the office, as if everything belonged to him from now on.
Charles suddenly spoke to James, "Mr. Smith, could you come with me for a moment? I have something to discuss with you!"
James was stunned for a moment upon hearing this, but without saying much, he directly followed Charles out of the office.
After leaving the office, Charles asked James with a very serious expression, "Mr. Smith, are you planning to give up the inheritance now?"
James looked at Charles with a helpless smile, then said lightly, "Is this kind of talk really necessary now?"
"Of course it's necessary!" Charles shouted excitedly, then continued, "Mr. Smith, you are still Willard's heir, and you still have the right to inherit the estate. But if you give up, then there really is no hope left!"
"Even if I don't want to give up, what can I do? The contract clearly states that I can't reveal my identity to Laura until she truly becomes my wife. But now I've already revealed my identity, and Matthew has the evidence!" James shot back.
Charles sighed, "I understand your feelings."
"Oh, really? I had already sensed Matthew's trap, but I had no choice but to reveal my identity to save Laura. But what I can't understand is, if Willard intended for me to inherit his estate, why did he set so many conditions? What was the point of these stipulations? Tell me!" James shouted, his eyes wide open.
"Willard just wanted to see you and Miss Hall together. He didn't mean anything else, but he didn't expect someone like Matthew to exploit the loophole!" Charles explained helplessly.
James turned to Charles after hearing this, then said expressionlessly, "Forget it. Since things have come to this, there's no point in saying more. At worst, I just won't take the inheritance. I've already come to terms with it. I can still live well without money."
"Mr. Smith, things aren't as bad as you think. Although you revealed your identity, you did it to save Miss Hall. I'll explain everything to Mr. Soto later. Maybe they'll give you another chance!" Charles said to James.
"Is it possible?" James asked, stunned.
"We can only try. After all, you've already prepared for the worst, haven't you? We have nothing to lose now. We can only do our best now, so you can't give up. If you give up, all my efforts will be in vain!" Charles shouted at James, somewhat emotionally.
"What good will it do even if I try?"
James sighed helplessly. When Matthew presented the video, James knew he had little chance.
Charles looked James up and down, then said , "Mr. Smith, to be honest, I still have one last card up my sleeve. If it comes to a critical moment, this card could have an unexpected effect, so you really can't give up!"
"Are you kidding me? At this point, what card could you possibly have?"
James shouted at Charles impatiently.
"Mr. Smith, why would I lie to you? If I didn't have a card, why would I be here talking to you? Wouldn't it be better for me to go and curry favor with Matthew?" Charles said helplessly.
James looked at Charles in front of him and suddenly hesitated because he felt that what Charles said made some sense.
So he couldn't help but ask Charles, "What on earth is it?"
