Chapter 271 The Perfect Excuse
"To please you? Atticus?" Laura's eyes went wide, her face full of disbelief.
She couldn't understand why someone like Atticus, such a big deal, would try to please James, a regular college kid.
"Yeah, Atticus has always been trying to get on my good side as he found my connection with Charles. He wants me to ask Charles for a favor, but I refused as I don't want to get involved."
"And then?" Laura blinked, curious.
"Then you know the rest. Before I came here, I reached out to Atticus and asked him to do me a solid and say the vase was fake, but actually, it was real!" James explained slowly.
Laura added, "But if he does that, wouldn't he lose a vase for nothing?"
That vase was worth a crazy forty million dollars. Would Atticus really give up that kind of money just because of James?
"I made a deal with Atticus. If he helps me out, I'll owe him the money, and I'll pay him back when I can!" James rolled his eyes, making up an excuse.
"Why would he believe you? What if you never have that much money?" Laura asked, still suspicious.
"The money isn't a big deal because he knows about my connection with Charles. Even if I don't have that kind of money, Charles will back me up," James said calmly.
Laura looked at James, finding it hard to believe.
But no matter what, what James said made sense. Otherwise, there was no way to explain all this.
"So, you took on the forty million dollar debt to help my parents?" Laura asked, looking at James.
James paused for a moment, then said helplessly, "You could say that, but I didn't take on this debt for your family. It's for you. I know you can't come up with that kind of money right now, and your dad's company probably can't either, so I stepped in to help."
Laura felt a wave of gratitude after hearing James's words because she never expected things to be this way.
Actually, he was the one who had been quietly supporting her all along.
"If that's the case, why didn't you tell me earlier? Why did you keep this from me?" Laura shouted at James, her tone a bit agitated.
"Even if I told you, what good would it do? Atticus and I only made a verbal agreement; I have no proof. If I told your parents, they'd definitely mock me, so it's better to keep quiet!" Although James had made up the earlier parts, this statement came from the heart because he knew very well how Joe and Isolde treated him.
"But you can't just keep it to yourself! You did all this, but you stay quiet, and my parents still look down on you!" Laura shouted, her voice full of emotion, then stormed out of the room.
James saw Laura about to leave and quickly reached out to stop her, asking, "Where are you going?"
"I'm going to find my parents and tell them everything!" Laura snapped back.
"Do you think they'll believe you?" James asked, feeling helpless.
Laura paused, biting her lip, then said, "I don't care whether they believe it or not. Anyway, I have to let them know you took on the forty million dollars for them!"
"If you tell them now, they won't believe you. They'll think I tricked you. And even if they do believe you, what then? Can they pay me back?" James just wanted to keep things quiet.
If Laura really told her parents, the Hall family could easily check it out and find out about his connection with Atticus, making things worse.
Laura looked at James with her bright eyes, hesitated for a moment, then said softly, "I just think it's really unfair to you."
"There's no such thing as absolute fairness in this world," James replied calmly, then continued, "I know you want to improve things between your parents and me, but the reason they don't like me is because I'm poor. One or two incidents can't change these things, let alone..."
"Let alone what?" Laura quickly asked when she saw James hadn't finished his sentence.
"Nothing..." James shook his head lightly. He had wanted to say that he never intended to change those things.
He didn't care about Joe and Isolde's opinions of him as long as Laura didn't mind.
And once he married Laura, the restrictions on his identity would be lifted, and everyone would see him in a new light.
In James's eyes, nothing would be a problem as long as it could be solved by money.
Laura looked at James, feeling deeply moved.
And she also felt a bit of injustice for James.
After all, he had done so much behind the scenes, but no one knew, and he was still subjected to all kinds of ridicule. It was really unfair to him.
Her parents hadn't even thanked James and had tried every way to humiliate him.
He didn't know that his casual excuse had significantly increased Laura's affection for him.
