Chapter 117: Jarod Loved a Woman
Anthony sighed deeply, "Perhaps one day, you will understand."
"If it's about understanding your difficulties, I don't think that day will ever come."
Sebastian nodded, "I hope not."
Anthony glanced at his older brother and then at his grandfather, biting his lip and hesitant to speak.
"That's enough." Finally, it was Old Master Lawrence who leaned on his cane, tapped the floor, and stood up.
"Brothers should get along. What's all this fuss about?"
Sebastian said calmly, "Grandfather, you may leave. I won't see you off."
"I don't want you to see me off either, otherwise, you might just drive me to my death sooner or later!"
Old Master Lawrence snorted heavily and turned to walk away.
Anthony seemed like he wanted to stay, but felt it was inappropriate, and looked at Isabella with uncertainty in his eyes.
"Accompany grandfather back to the old house," Isabella smiled, "If you're free, we can have dinner together again."
"Okay, Isabella." Anthony nodded, thought for a moment, and added, "You...take care!"
"Okay, I will."
What the hell does "take care" even mean? Isabella wondered to herself.
Take care to get Lynda out of the picture? Or take care to make Sebastian choose her?
It seemed...none of these were things she could achieve just by saying "take care."
With the support of his walking canes, Sebastian walked slowly. When he passed by Isabella, he glanced at her.
"Take care, big brother," Isabella said, "Take care of yourself."
"Thank you, little sister."
While Sebastian didn't see him off, the butler naturally would, Isabella looked at everyone leaving the living room one by one before retracting her gaze.
"It seems that there is...something between you and Anthony that I don't know of," Sebastian's voice came from behind her.
"Are you still planning to keep it a secret?"
Isabella turned around and looked at him, "I'm not planning to."
"In that case, you can tell me."
"Let's make a deal." Isabella responded, "I can tell you, but before that, you need to answer my question."
Sebastian furrowed his brows slightly, "What do you want to ask?"
"Don't worry, it's not about Lynda, so don't be nervous. I just want to know if there is anything else between you and Anthony besides the Lawrence family's power struggle?"
"He is my half-brother, and also someone who has always had his eyes on seizing control of the Lawrence Group. He has caused me a lot of trouble behind the scenes," Sebastian said, "Besides that, there is nothing."
"But from what I just heard in your conversation, it seems to involve someone else," Isabella asked, "It seems that it's a woman you loved, Sebastian."
"Didn't I tell you before that he injured his leg while trying to save someone?"
"I remember."
Sebastian sat down, picked up his water glass, and took a sip. His eyebrows lowered as he said, "It was to save his fiancée."
After hearing this, Isabella was secretly astonished. "Then..."
"She wasn't saved and died," Sebastian said calmly, "and he ended up with a limp that he still has to this day."
"Did he love his fiancée very much?"
This question made Sebastian ponder for a moment.
After a while, he answered, "I suppose he did. After all, the situation was so dangerous at that time, yet he went up to save her without hesitation."
If he didn't love her, how could he disregard his own life and risk it all to save her?
"But based on what you said, Anthony doesn't seem like someone who would fight you for inheritance and shares, right?"
Sebastian's hand holding the water glass paused, and he looked up at her. "What did you say?"
Isabella replied, "He now sits in a wheelchair, uses crutches, and there's no possibility of his legs recovering. He keeps a low profile. If it weren't for the Lawrence family mansion, I wouldn't even know he exists. He appears to be calm and unambitious, not interested in worldly matters."
"There's a saying, 'To know someone's face but not their heart.' Haven't you heard it before?"
She shrugged, "Perhaps, that's just my speculation. I think after losing his true love, he lost interest in everything."
"You're wrong," Sebastian put down his water glass. "Losing a true love is indeed a great blow, but it has never stopped him from striving for power and plotting for himself."
Isabella looked at him seriously, "Are you sure you understand your younger brother? Are you sure he has great ambitions?"
He remained silent for two seconds and said four words, "More than you do."
"Sure, I've only met him a few times, and I can count on one hand how many words he has spoken to me. But you're his older brother; he has watched and learned from you."
"Are you defending Anthony, speaking for him, finding reasons for him? What has he given you in return?" Sebastian asked, "Hmm?"
Isabella rolled her eyes, "Nothing at all."
"Go ahead, that day at the Lawrence family..."
"He told me that the Lawrence family doesn't like me, and as long as it's not Lynda marrying you, whoever marries you, the Lawrence family will accept and approve." Isabella said, "That's all."
Sebastian's voice turned cold, "He told you about Lynda?"
"No, he didn't mention any names. He was probably just reminding me that I shouldn't live in a fantasy world and be self-righteous."
So, Anthony's actions made Isabella feel that she wasn't the person Sebastian described. A bankrupt rich girl, helpless and destitute.
But in a blink of an eye, she married into the most prosperous mansion in New York.
The family accepted her, welcomed her, and respected her... Everything seemed overly perfect.
Sebastian wanted to remind her to stay sober and calm.
He felt... she was pitiful.
"Instigating discord," Sebastian spoke up, "and you believed it."
"Anthony's words were the truth."
Sebastian repeated, "I said you believed it. That's why you kept it from me."
"I..."
"He wanted to drive a wedge between us for his own gain," Sebastian concluded directly, "just like that."
Isabella asked discontentedly, "Why do you always think so poorly of people?"
"Why do you always take Anthony's side?"
"I... forget it," she bit her lip, "I'm just curious about what kind of person he really is."
"My enemy," Sebastian answered, "and you are my wife, so you should know what to do in your heart."
"Fine, it's none of my business if you and him have something going on. Then, what about grandpa coming early this morning to investigate about you and Lynda? What's the plan?"
Sebastian suddenly stood up, taking long strides and walking directly in front of her.
Being too close, Isabella had to tilt her head back and take a step back. "What... What are you doing? If you have something to say, say it. Why are you getting so close?"
He looked her up and down, starting from her eyes and going down to her toes. Then, he looked up again, meeting her gaze once more.
Isabella felt a shiver down her spine from being scrutinized by him.
Only to see Sebastian slightly parting his thin lips and slowly saying, "Let's have dinner first."
