Chapter 22 Abduction
"'Relying on men is ultimately unreliable, especially since you don't have a powerful family background!” Grace stopped Isabella in her tracks. 'Isabella, do you really think Mrs. Lawrence's position is so easy to take?'
‘'Whether it's easy or not, only those who have experienced it have the qualifications to judge. You haven't even been close to it, so you better shut up.”
‘'I'm telling you, Isabella, don't be too arrogant now. One day, you will suffer greatly, and when that happens, I will repay you with ten times the humiliation you gave me!'
‘'Perhaps you won't live to see that day, Miss Turner.'’
"Suddenly, Grace smiled and approached Isabella. 'I know Sebastian treats you well, but how long have you known him? You have no idea about his past and his thoughts. Isabella, I know better than you.'’
As Isabella looked into Grace's smiling eyes, she almost simultaneously thought of the words spoken by Lawrence family's eldest brother, Bo Si Su.
Does Grace know something?! She wondered.
Perhaps she could get Grace to talk.
"He is my husband, sharing the same bed, together day and night, so of course, I know." Isabella deliberately flicked her hair,
“As for the past, it's all in the past, I don't care."
"You don't just not care, you simply don't know. You're here pretending to be strong, but deep down, you're just stubborn."
"Oh my, Miss Turner, do you really think you know so much? Acting so smug in front of me, tell me everything you know.”
“Don’t take me for a fool, Isabella. I know you’re trying to manipulate me with your words.”
Grace also laughed, “Actually, it’s fine if I tell you, so you can stop this self-righteous act that disgusts people.”
“I’ll lend an ear.” Was Isabella’s seemingly indifferent response.
Grace said, "I've pursued Sebastian for so long, but he didn't even spare me a glance. He quickly married you and got the marriage certificate. Why? Because you were easy to control, with no background or support. My status is not something he could treat so casually."
"And also, he doesn't accept me, simply because he doesn't like me. Similarly, Isabella, he doesn't like you even a bit."
"The person he truly likes...huh, the day she returns, Isabella, that will be the day you're kicked aside. By then, you'll be nothing more than a worthless stray grass on the roadside!"
Her, it's her. Isabella heard this same reference from the mouth of a second person.
Who is she exactly? Feeling slightly perplexed.
Her thoughts spun in circles, but on the surface, she still had to force a smile, or even...not lose her momentum.
"Oh, what you're saying is just this little thing." Isabella glanced with a sidelong look and sounded very indifferent, "I thought you had such explosive news, but it turns out this, how disappointing."
"Isabella, do you...do you know?"
"How could I not know? Sebastian and I are husband and wife. What being husband and wife means, you wouldn't understand and I won't blame you. Since you've never been married, I won't argue with you."
"Impossible!" Grace shook her head, "This matter is rarely mentioned, not even brought up in front of Sebastian. How...how could he tell you!"
"Believe it or not, it's up to you. I have other things to attend to, not wasting time with you. Goodbye."
Isabella straightened her back and proudly walked past Grace, her momentum unaffected.
But deep down in her heart, a hint of desolation arose.
That "her," she must exist, even if Isabella didn't want to believe it, she could no longer continue deceiving herself.
The elevators in the hospital were very difficult to wait for. After finally waiting for one, it was already packed with people.
Isabella glanced at the stairs next to her and decided to walk down. The exercise would do her good after last night’s wild activities, she thought.
There was a heavy musty smell in the corridor and the motion-activated lights flickered on and off, sort of creepy. Isabella's footsteps echoed loudly, so loud it was almost impossible to hear anything else in the stairwell.
So loud that...she ignored the deliberately slowed and softened footsteps behind her.
Isabella lowered her head and diligently stared at the steps beneath her feet, when suddenly she noticed a dark shadow looming behind her. Before she could turn around to look, a piece of black cloth directly covered her face.
Her eyes widened in shock, but she couldn't see anything anymore. She could only make muffled sounds resembling a sob.
Her entire being was being controlled by the person behind her, and soon after, she felt a heavy blow on her forehead.
As the pain resonated through her head, Isabella knew she had to act quickly. Summoning all her strength, she abruptly jerked her body, causing her captor to loosen their grip.
Seizing the opportunity, she swiftly tore off the black cloth that obstructed her vision.
Gasping for air, Isabella’s eyes darted around, searching for possible escape routes. She spotted a dimly lit corridor ahead and instinctively tried to run towards it, her heart pounding with adrenaline.
But…
Isabella's consciousness vanished in an instant, her eyes shut, now oblivious to everything.
In that moment, she regretted not waiting a little longer for the elevator. What harm would that have done?
Why did she take this deserted stairway that almost no one ever used?
It was too late. There was no time left.
