Chapter 355 You should be nothing but a pile of ashes by now

Isabella: [Don't wear yourself out. I'll take care of myself and the baby. See you when you get home.]

Isabella's Facebook profile pic was a lazy, curled-up kitten.

Sebastian stared at the kitten, imagining Isabella lying in bed, all lazy, obedient, and sweet.

His palm itched. He wanted to hold her, stroke her hair, kiss her lips, and watch her blush.

For a moment, Sebastian felt a bit shy.

He got up, walked to the window, and looked downstairs.

As if by some telepathic connection, he saw Isabella with Brittany, helping Mary out of the hospital.

Soon, Larry drove up. Brittany and Mary got in the car, which slowly drove away.

Then, Isabella hailed a cab, opened the door, and looked up at the sixth floor before getting in.

Seeing nothing, she got into the car.

Sebastian's lips curled into a faint smile as he watched the car leave.

He lowered his head and sent a message to Willowbrook Estate, asking them to prepare lunch for Isabella.

"Water." Hearing the voice behind him, Sebastian checked the time. The doctor said Joshua was about to wake up now..

Sebastian walked over and picked up the water he had placed on the bedside table.

Joshua woke up, staring at the ceiling, still a bit disoriented.

Sensing someone beside him, he came back to his senses.

Joshua struggled to prop himself up with his arms, trying to sit up.

But his arms were weak. Just as he propped himself up, his elbow gave out, and he fell back onto the bed.

A hint of disgust appeared in Joshua's eyes.

"Here." That look slightly hurt Sebastian. He placed the straw in Joshua's mouth and said coldly, "Drink up."

Joshua drank as ordered, then turned to Sebastian.

Sebastian had a solemn expression; his brows furrowed deeply.

Joshua's eyes were somewhat unfocused, and his voice was hoarse. "You're not even dressed properly. I'm worried Isabella might get jealous thinking something happened between us."

Joshua tried to lighten the mood.

"Get lost!" Sebastian wasn't having it. He placed the cup on the table with a crisp sound.

Joshua knew Sebastian too well. He stopped joking and, after a few seconds of silence, hoarsely asked, "How is Brittany? I remember she fainted."

"Joshua, think about yourself. If I hadn't arrived early, you'd be a pile of ashes by now." Sebastian choked up, his gaze cold.

Joshua closed his heavy eyes slightly.

After a brief rest, he opened his eyes and smiled. "I agree."

He should have been a pile of ashes long ago.

Joshua gazed at Sebastian, drawing a bitter smile, "Just one step away, and you could have been part of my plan. You're just too smart, but it isn't always a good thing."

"Sorry for your trouble." Joshua asked, "How's the company doing now?"

Sebastian held back his anger, not arguing with Joshua.

Calm and composed, Sebastian said coldly, "As long as the company is in my hands, it'll be fine. Take care of yourself. Stick to the doctor's plan. Once you're stable, you'll go abroad for intensive treatment."

Sebastian's words were final, and Joshua said nothing.

He took a deep breath and asked again, "Brittany..."

Annoyed, Sebastian cut him off, "She's doing great. She's lively, cheerful, loved by her parents, and has many suitors. Just as you wished, a bright future awaits her."

Hearing this, a sharp pain wrapped around Joshua's heart.

"Good." Joshua forced a smile. "That's really good."

After a while, he repeated, "Really good."

In the end, Joshua's voice grew lower, "A promise for the next life is enough for me."

Sebastian mercilessly mocked him, "She's twenty-seven. In the vast expanse of life, maybe only a third has passed. The remaining two-thirds are still waiting. With a husband you select to accompany her, she won't even remember who you are, let alone the promise of a lifetime with you?"

Joshua's pupils contracted tightly, shivering as a chill swept over his heart.

The room fell into a long silence.

After an unknown amount of time, Joshua softly spoke, "Let's leave it at that."

He looked at Sebastian with a sorrowful gaze, "The concept of a 'next life' is inherently void, just a way to deceive oneself."

Sebastian had intended to provoke Joshua's possessiveness to reclaim Brittany and force Joshua to want to live, but Joshua was too stubborn. He had said everything he could; if Joshua disagreed, there was nothing more he could do.

"I'll cooperate with the treatment; don't worry about me," Joshua chuckled, "You and Isabella still need a wedding. Give her what she deserves so you won't regret it later."

Speaking of the engagement, Joshua lightly asked, "I forgot to ask, how did you handle it?"

Sebastian gave him a disdainful look.

Joshua let out a breathy sound, trying to laugh but failing. "The engagement thing," he reminded.

"Last night, when I brought you to the hospital, I staged a fake car accident to cover for you, making it easier for you to stay in the hospital later," Sebastian said. "The engagement was canceled last night. I contacted the Garcia family, and all compensations have been made. Focus on getting better."

Joshua choked, his throat dry, "Thanks."

"Cut the crap," Sebastian sat on the couch, legs crossed, his fingers playing with an unlit cigarette. "The best way to thank me is to get well."

"I understand." Joshua glanced at him sideways.

Between brothers, there's no need for excessive thanks.

Everything doesn't need to be spelled out.

Sebastian snorted coldly, but there was a faint curve at the corner of his mouth. At least Joshua wanted to live.

He rubbed his forehead, his hand covering his deep, dark eyes—If Joshua had no desire to live, it would be simple. Sebastian wouldn't mind bringing Brittany here to force Joshua to want to live.

There was a knock on the door.

Sebastian thought it was the doctor making rounds, tossed the cigarette into the trash can, and got up to open the door.

"Mr. Lawrence, how is Joshua?" Nicole was wearing a pure white evening gown, looking heartbroken.
