Chapter 374 I Failed to Protect You
Isabella was in Sebastian's arms, her chin resting in his hand. She sniffled, tears falling onto his skin. "I was so scared. I thought I lost the babies."
"I even dreamt the babies were asking why I didn't protect them." Her tears flowed harder, guilt flashing in her eyes.
Sebastian's heart ached. He gently stroked her cheek with his thumb. "It was just a dream. Don't be afraid."
Isabella closed her eyes, swallowing hard. When she opened them, her breathing quickened. "No, it wasn't just a dream. It felt so real."
"They were our babies, Sebastian," she said earnestly. "They looked like a mix of us and spoke just like you. They must be blaming me."
Sebastian's eyes were locked on Isabella; she had him completely captivated. Her hair was a mess, damp with sweat, and her face was streaked with tears, with a few clinging to her lashes.
Yet, Sebastian was deeply moved. His gaze darkened as he leaned in and kissed her.
Her lips were salty with tears and cold to the touch. Sebastian kissed away the tears, warming her lips and chasing away the cold.
At first, Isabella resisted, but the kiss was so tender it stirred something inside her. Lost in the kiss, she found comfort in his embrace.
Sebastian paused, grabbed a tissue, and wiped the sweat from her forehead. "How do I sound when I talk?"
Lost in his deep eyes, Isabella muttered, "Cold and stern."
Sebastian paused. "Me?"
Isabella sniffled. "The old you." Her playful side eased him.
He ruffled her hair. "If that's how you still see me, I'd be really sad."
"Well, that's how you used to be," Isabella said. "Your genes are strong; they've influenced our babies."
He replied, "So our babies won't be stern with you. They won't blame you."
Confused, Isabella looked up. "What do you mean?"
Sebastian gently tapped her forehead. "Because I won't blame you. As you said, our genes are strong. So naturally, our babies won't blame you. They'll only feel sorry for you."
Sebastian hugged her. "It was just a dream. You're blaming yourself." His voice was soft. "It's all gone, Isabella. Accidents happen. If anyone's to blame, it's me for not protecting you."
The autumn sunlight was gentle, not harsh, in the warmth of which Isabella basked, feeling comforted.
But no matter how warm the sun was, it couldn't compare to Sebastian's embrace. His broad shoulders, strong back, and firm chest gave her a deep sense of security.
All her negative emotions were soothed away, and her heartbeat calmed. Isabella patted his back and began to comfort him. "Stop blaming yourself; it wasn't your fault. Are you scared? It's okay. I'm fine now."
Sebastian stayed quiet, lost in thoughts. He furrowed his brow, feeling a wave of self-blame as he held Isabella.
He'd been swamped with work, taking care of Joshua, and managing the Lawrence family, leaving himself stretched thin.
Now, he was back, driven by his own need to see Isabella. Knowing she missed him but not giving her the chance, he dived back into work, waiting for her to come to him.
During all this, he'd been accountable to everyone but Isabella.
And her? She never felt wronged. She'd been learning things she wasn't good at for him, always giving him a sense of security.
Even after such a big scare, she didn't blame him at all.
Sebastian had never felt so cherished by anyone. He couldn't help but mutter, "Fool." This fool, unique and precious, was a gift from God to him.
Thankfully, the car accident hadn't resulted in anything serious. Thinking back to the scenes outside the operating room, where Thomas had repeatedly told him how dire things were, Sebastian shuddered and hugged Isabella tighter.
"Let's have the doctor check on you, okay?" Sebastian suggested. "I need to know you're alright."
"No," Isabella said, not wanting to see anyone. "Just hold me. I missed you so much."
"I can't take it anymore," Sebastian's voice was hoarse.
Isabella pulled back slightly, "What?"
Their eyes met, and Sebastian was drawn to her. He cleared his throat, "Are you hungry?" Right on cue, Isabella's stomach growled.
"I made some pasta. Wait here," Sebastian said, bending down to kiss her forehead.
Then, he headed to the kitchen. Chaos ensued as Sebastian, usually clumsy in the kitchen, tried to prepare the meal.
But it was this clumsiness that touched Isabella's heart.
He was truly wonderful. How could Isabella ever let someone else have him? She, Sebastian, and their babies would always be together.
Almost instantly, Isabella remembered Lynda's malicious face.
Upon waking up, she had too many things to worry about. The babies and Sebastian consumed her thoughts, leaving no room for Lynda, the mastermind behind it all.
Now, thinking of Lynda, Isabella sat frozen on the bed, gripping the bedsheets tightly. The white sheets creased under her grip as the scenes from earlier replayed in her mind, the hatred in her chest boiling over.
Isabella gritted her teeth and silently vowed that since she was still alive, she wouldn't let Lynda get away with it!
Lynda had crossed all the lines, hurting her and her babies! She couldn't take it anymore. This time, Lynda would pay!
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Sebastian walking towards her with a bowl of pasta. She immediately turned to him.
"Do you know..." Isabella started but then paused, noticing his hand. "What happened to your hand?"
