Chapter 250 Sorry for Interrupting Your Search for a Wealthy Son-in-law
Sebastian's presence was overpowering, a pressure few could withstand.
Samuel Carter, the sly old fox, certainly wouldn't ruffle Sebastian's feathers over a woman who sparked his interest. He merely expressed his surprise, "Miss Wallace is married?"
Isabella nodded awkwardly in confirmation.
"May I ask which fortunate gentleman has taken Miss Wallace's hand?"
While out and about, Isabella knew Sebastian would not disclose her personal details. She offered a modest smile, "Mr. Carter, you flatter me."
"Assistant Wallace, there's no need for such modesty," Sebastian's aura of menace began to fade. As he spoke, he tore off the band-aid from his neck, exposing a mark, and moved to Isabella's side. Draping his jacket over her shoulders, he gently encircled her waist.
Confronting Samuel Carter's surprised gaze, Sebastian chuckled, "Mr. Carter, what do you think?"
The masked smile on Samuel Carter's face cracked inch by inch, but he was always adept at concealing his emotions, as if nothing had happened.
He continued to smile brightly, "Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence are a perfect match, truly made for each other."
Sebastian, in good spirits, pulled Isabella closer and turned his head, "Won't you thank Mr. Carter?"
Isabella couldn't quite figure out Sebastian's act. Why bother with this? If he decided to abandon her later, wouldn't it be inconvenient that there would be one more person aware that she'd been discarded by a wealthy family?
She smiled courteously, "Thank you, Mr. Carter."
Sebastian caressed Isabella's waist, "Mr. Carter, don't forget to transfer the reward my wife has diligently earned."
Samuel Carter's eyes crinkled with mirthful laughter, "I wouldn't dream of reneging on a prize earned by such efforts, sister-in-law."
‘A Night of Networking’
"Tonight was truly enjoyable, thanks to Mr. Carter's hospitality. Let's get together again, but for now, we'll take our leave," they said.
"Sounds good, it's a deal. I'll be in New York next week, and I'm definitely taking you and your spouse out for a meal." Carter gestured.
Any minor grievances from earlier were quickly forgotten; in the business world, another friend was always preferable to an enemy.
Isabella sighed inwardly. This world of commerce just wasn't for her, with its necessity to mask emotions, to hide reactions—it was exhausting.
Finally leaving the golf course, Isabella breathed a sigh of relief, pushing him away like a cat with its tail stepped on, immediately stepping out of his embrace to keep her distance. "Thanks to Mr. Lawrence for the assist, I'll work hard and take good care of the kids."
Sebastian's hand hovered emptily in the air, a profound sense of loss threatening to consume him.
He remembered Isabella's lively conversation with Samuel Carter and Carter's appreciative gaze, and he thought of Marcus, spurred on by his interest in Isabella, jealousy surging within him.
Sebastian clenched his fist and scoffed, "Thanks? Is that how you truly feel?"
"Of course," Isabella said, her words resonating with clear conviction.
But Sebastian countered, "Yet I can't help feeling Mrs. Lawrence would blame me for interrupting your fishing for a rich son-in-law."
He emphasized "Mrs. Lawrence" with weight.
Isabella was taken aback, blinking slowly twice, and offered a weary smile, "So that's how you see me, as a gold digger."
Sebastian's heart seized at that; he despised how she could so easily sway his emotions. "No? Wasn't it for money that you agreed to marry me?"
"That's right," Isabella retorted, breath taken away by his words, yet she managed a strained smile, "Since Mr. Lawrence already knows, why expose me? It took so long to finally meet someone wealthy; I wanted to see where things could go, to have a seamless transition come October."
Sebastian's temples throbbed, veins snaking along his arms. Oddly, at this moment, hearing these words from Isabella, his heart ached with actual pain. It was a pain he was sure of.
He was always domineering, and if he was in pain, he felt Isabella must feel it too. He lifted Isabella's chin, said through gritted teeth, "I was wrong about you; you're more despicable than I ever imagined."
Isabella's pale chin was marked with a red imprint from his grip. She bore the pain and Sebastian's humiliation, stubbornly replying, "Now, that you know, it's not too late."
‘’Sebastian's Stare’
Sebastian's gaze was terrifying, his face turning icy.
Isabella, too used to not following the rules, was exceptionally defiant today. It annoyed Sebastian to the point where he wanted to find a place to punish her immediately, to make her cry and beg for mercy nonstop in front of him.
However, the presence of the child softened this thought. Sebastian settled for a less severe approach, leaning down to seal her lips with his own.
This time, his aggression was overwhelming, powering through her attempts to dodge and resist. It was a pure release for him.
Isabella bit down hard, soon tasting blood. Yet, Sebastian only paused for a second, not stopping at all. He vented all his anger before finally releasing her.
Isabella caught her breath, head down, hand raised high, but Sebastian easily caught her wrist. Her eyes were watery, tears swirling around, "Let go!"
Sebastian licked the blood off the corner of his mouth, his tone nonchalant and mocking, "I'll give you money; are you satisfied now?"
He dropped Isabella's hand, turned heartlessly, and strode away, leaving her standing there.
Afterward, he got into a car, leaving Isabella behind.
‘Isabella in San Francisco’
Daytime in San Francisco was warm, but Isabella felt unbearably cold. The jacket she wore not only failed to provide warmth but seemed to emit a chill instead.
In annoyance, she ripped it off and tossed it into a nearby trash can. With the money she had won today, she could buy him a new jacket to make up for it; that should be enough!
Why did he have to treat her like this? Was there anyone in the world worse than Sebastian? She may have lacked money, and yes, she married for money – these were facts. But wasn't he the one who approached her first?
The place over Isabella's heart had been hollowed out long ago, pain accompanying her always, and now, Sebastian had salted the wound...
The pain was so intense it shot to her lower abdomen, causing a sudden sharp ache.
Isabella's body swayed, sweat beading on her forehead.
She leaned against the wall, caressing her abdomen in panic, "Baby, be good. Mommy won't cry or get upset. You're the most important thing. Mommy will take care of you."
Perhaps it truly was a connection with her child – with Isabella's deep breaths, the pain miraculously subsided. She touched her belly softly, "Such a good child, so obedient. Mommy loves you."
She loved her baby so much that the mere thought of her child brought out a genuine, beaming smile on her face. But as she smiled, her expression suddenly froze.
Was Sebastian really gone for good, without any concern for the child in her womb? Could she truly bear to give up the baby to him? The seeds of doubt planted in her mind began to sprout.
"Excuse me, Miss," a car pulled up in front of Isabella as the driver rolled down the window and said, "That gentleman from earlier asked me to give you a lift."
Isabella couldn't be sure if the driver really knew Sebastian. She hesitated to accept the ride, shaking her head and declining, "No, thank you." She took a few steps forward and flagged down a taxi.
