Chapter 378 We're in a Cold War, aren't we?
Isabella nestled in Sebastian's arms, suddenly feeling a chill. Her throat tightened, and her eyes welled up with tears.
Sebastian's breathing behind her became steady and rhythmic, signaling he had fallen asleep.
But Isabella couldn't sleep. She was too scared to close her eyes. Every time she did, Lynda's cruel voice echoed in her ears.
All the comforting words Sebastian had said during the day were useless now.
Even with her eyes open, she saw horrifying scenes where her children were asking terrifying questions.
"Mom, wouldn't Dad protect us?"
"Mom, can't you protect us? Won't Dad avenge us?"
"Mom, you don't care about us. We don't want you."
Isabella felt like she was losing her mind, with voices blaming her and Sebastian ringing in her ears, which were full of fear and loss, more painful than a knife to her heart.
Isabella wanted to wake Sebastian, to argue, to ask why he wouldn't deal with Lynda right away, but she hesitated.
After two days without rest, Sebastian was exhausted, and Isabella felt sorry for him, the dark circles under whose eyes were still vivid in her mind.
Isabella was in pain and fear, her body trembling. Afraid of disturbing Sebastian, she bit down on the back of her hand to control the tremors.
What a long night!
Isabella didn't know how she got through it; she couldn't sleep but had to, waking up in a panic each time.
The next morning, as expected, she saw dark circles under her eyes.
"Didn't sleep well?" Sebastian asked, frowning as he made breakfast.
Isabella could get out of bed now. "No," she replied hoarsely.
With a hoarse voice, she pushed herself up, hands supporting her as she moved to the edge of the bed.
"Want to freshen up?" Sebastian bent down, lifting Isabella without waiting for her response and carrying her to the bathroom.
Isabella patted him. She wanted to pee! Blushing, she hit Sebastian's shoulder, her voice hoarse, "Put me down, I can do it. I'm not just going to freshen up, I..."
Isabella stuttered.
"You what?" Sebastian lazily quirked his lips. "Is there anything I haven't seen before?"
'What a jerk!' Isabella seethed.
"We're in a silence treatment, aren't we?" Isabella pushed him, but he didn't budge.
With a serious expression, she raised her chin, "Are you being so proactive because you've surrendered?"
Her words amused Sebastian. "Isabella, are you trying to be cute with me?"
Isabella felt helpless. How could Sebastian see her as being cute? Was she so ineffective in her anger now?
'I am being cute? Why don't you let Amber come and be cute with you?'
To Isabella's surprise, just a single complaint actually brought Amber over.
"Sebastian, Isabella?" As they heard Amber's voice, the door to the ward opened silently, and a face peeked in. "I'm coming in."
Amber was fully geared up, carrying a thermos in her hand. As soon as she spoke, she entered the room.
At the bathroom door, Isabella and Sebastian both turned to look in her direction.
Three pairs of eyes met.
"Whoa," Amber said, slightly moving her lips behind her mask. Then she turned around excitedly. "Am I interrupting at the wrong time? Are you two going to take a bath together?
"It's Grandpa's fault, forcing me to come at this time." Amber laughed brightly, tapping her foot. "It's none of my business."
Isabella was mortified. She glared at Sebastian, silently mouthing, "Put me down."
Sebastian leaned in closer as if about to kiss her.
Isabella really wanted to pry open Sebastian's head and see what was inside.
Did he really not get what she was feeling?
She was upset and angry!
In frustration, Isabella bit down on Sebastian's chin.
Amber peeked over and suddenly chocked on her own spit.
She shook her head and pretended to cover her eyes, saying, "I didn't see anything. Just keep going."
Isabella's face turned crimson, and a wave of heat rose to her head. She quickly let go.
Realizing he had provoked her, Sebastian let go of Isabella, supporting her waist until she stood steady, and then he rubbed her head. "Go on."
Angrily, Isabella's mouth stung, as Sebastian had bitten her lip in jest.
After the kiss, he raised an eyebrow in a self-satisfied manner as if asking, "Any problem? Mrs. Lawrence."
Amber was just a few steps away from them when he was doing all that, which made Isabella feel clandestine.
Her pupils contracting, and Isabella deliberately stepped on his shiny shoe.
It was so embarrassing!
"You pervert!" Isabella instinctively shouted. When she realized that, her face flushed with embarrassment as she hurried into the bathroom and locked the door.
Sebastian smiled mischievously.
Amber turned around. "You're shameless but so happy, Sebastian."
Sebastian sat on the couch, sipping his coffee, and glanced up at Amber. "Any problems?"
"Not at all! The happier you are, the more pleased I am. I'm the best sister in the world!" Amber said.
"You smooth talker," Sebastian tapped his coffee cup. "I've invested in a variety show recently that has good prospects. If you are available, go ahead and attend it."
Amber removed her mask and sunglasses, sitting on the chair next to Sebastian.
Leaning on the sofa armrests, Amber said, her eyes sparkling, "Sebastian, you're the best. I wish you both eternal happiness and many children!"
Sebastian's eyes lit up with a hint of a smile as he tapped Amber's forehead with his fingers. "Isabella is shy. Don't tease her."
With that, Sebastian's phone rang. After a brief pause, he took a look at it. Then, he set down his coffee cup, stood up with a slightly cool expression, and said, "I need to get going. Stay here with Isabella."
Seeing his serious expression, Amber quickly nodded.
By the time Isabella came out from the bathroom, Sebastian had been gone for several minutes.
"Isabella, Sebastian has gone out for something. I'll keep you company this morning," Amber waved to her. Come on, Grandpa asked the cook specifically to make this fish soup for you."
After washing her face, Isabella's redness subsided a bit. She sat across from Amber, smiling gently. "Thank you, Amber."
Feeling somewhat guilty for having Amber come so early, Isabella couldn't help it.
"Isabella, if you keep being so polite, I'll be mad," Amber pouted, cupping her face in her hands, looking melancholic. "We're family. In fact, Grandpa was supposed to come too, but one of his friends came to visit, so he had to send me first.
"Everyone is worried about you, Isabella," Amber sighed. "Dad's out of the country and doesn't know what's going on with you. Jarod is also worried about you and the babies. We're family, so there's no need to thank us.
"Or should I say, Isabella, are you still angry with Sebastian?"
