Chapter 440 A Grand Engagement for You
Samuel was floored; her acting chops were so top-notch she could snag an Oscar, no sweat.
If he didn't already know the servants bailed 'cause of her nasty insults and torture, he might've fallen for her act again.
Ruth was fuming, "Bullshit! I did stuff for you, you owe me!"
Lynda was bawling, not even trying to talk, just crying so hard it looked like she might pass out.
Samuel smirked, scooped her up, and did his usual comforting routine, "Don't cry, I got your back. Plus, after tomorrow, you'll be my fiancée. Even if you messed up, I'd still have your back, no questions asked."
Seeing Samuel act the same as always, Lynda felt all cozy inside.
But, she couldn't help but feel a bit of disdain.
She thought, 'Samuel's such a fool. How could he believe me after just a few words?'
Lynda didn't want to get hitched to Samuel at all; her disgust for him was growing by the minute.
But for now, she had to play along with Samuel. Things with Sebastian weren't getting any better, and she needed to keep Samuel on the hook.
Swallowing her disgust, Lynda gave him a loving look. "Samuel, you're the best."
When Samuel looked down, he caught a glimpse of the disgust in Lynda's eyes, and his grip on her tightened.
But his smile just got even more perfect. "You deserve it."
"Both of you can go to hell!" Ruth struggled to get up, leaned forward, and tried to headbutt Samuel.
Samuel dodged, stuck out his long leg, and kicked Ruth in the stomach hard. She hit the ground, blood trickling from her lips.
She wiped the blood away, her upper body swaying before she collapsed.
Lynda was super pleased with the scene.
"Samuel," she called his name softly, looking up with fake concern, "Wasn't that too much? Maybe she's just upset about getting fired and wants money."
Samuel lowered his eyes. "Lynda, being too nice isn't always good."
Lynda pouted, looking all hurt, "You think I'm too nice? But I..."
Samuel carried Lynda into the bedroom, laid her on the bed, tapped her nose, and smiled. "What are you thinking? I love that about you. Otherwise, why would we be getting engaged tomorrow?"
Lynda's cheeks turned red, and she shyly covered her face.
After a bit, she asked, puzzled, "By the way, Samuel, why'd you come over? Need something?"
"Nothing," Samuel pulled up her blanket. "Just wanted to see if you need help moving anything. After all, this is Mr. Lawrence's place. It makes me jealous seeing you here."
Lynda covered his mouth, gently shook her head, and playfully said, "Samuel, don't think like that. It doesn't matter where I live. This place is already mine."
She couldn't move out. If she did, she'd lose all contact with Sebastian.
Samuel grabbed her wrist, pulled her hand away, and looked suspicious. "How can I not think like that? Last time I wanted to help you move, you said you had a cold and postponed it. This time, why don't you want to move? Isn't living with me good?"
"Lynda," Samuel frowned and asked seriously, "Tell me, do you still love Mr. Lawrence?"
Lynda's eyes darted away, and she felt a wave of unease.
"No," she blurted out, sitting up straight, "No way, I've made things clear with Sebastian. Samuel, you can't accuse me like that."
"Why are you freaking out?" Samuel stood up, pinching her nose. "Did you do something shady behind my back?"
Lynda's heart pounded, and she felt something was off with Samuel.
His words were weird.
What exactly was weird, Lynda couldn't put her finger on it.
His expressions and actions were all lovey-dovey, just like always.
"Samuel!" Lynda clenched her fists and playfully hit Samuel's chest. "What nonsense are you spouting?"
Samuel laughed. "My bad."
He shouldn't have tried to nudge Lynda into spilling the truth and owning up to her mistakes.
Lynda didn't deserve his kindness.
"Glad to hear it."
"Yeah," Samuel's eyes narrowed with a wicked grin. "Get some sleep. I'll stay with you until you doze off, then I'll go handle the engagement plans and give you a grand engagement you'll never forget."
Lynda, lost in her daydreams, thought about getting engaged in front of all the rich folks in Maple Valley and smiled genuinely. "Okay."
Using this engagement to buy her some time to win over Sebastian.
By then, Sebastian and Isabella would surely be splitsville, and she could swoop in.
This engagement, even if it was doomed, would make her happy if it was lavish and grand, grabbing everyone's attention.
Lynda slowly closed her eyes, her breathing evening out.
In her dreams, she probably saw a satisfying scene, and her smile almost reached her ears.
The smile on Samuel's face vanished as Lynda fell asleep.
He stood up, looked down at Lynda's sleeping face, clenched his fist, and barely restrained himself from grabbing her neck.
Luckily, the mess with Lynda would end tomorrow.
The humiliation he had suffered was about to be avenged.
Samuel turned around without a second thought and walked out of the room.
At the staircase, Samuel saw Ruth, who had fainted earlier, clutching her chest and coughing.
He remembered Ruth's words, and a bright idea popped into his head.
Quickly walking downstairs, Samuel stood in front of Ruth.
Ruth was startled and shrank back, "What do you want?"
Samuel sneered. "Scared, huh? When you messed with the car brakes, didn't you think about getting caught?"
Ruth's eyes widened, and her body shook. "Didn't you... didn't you not believe it?"
Samuel bent down and lowered his voice, "Do one thing for me tomorrow, and I'll give you all the money you need. Deal?"
Ruth was tempted, but Lynda's previous example made her cautious.
Her mouth opened and closed, hesitating and not daring to speak.
"If you want money and want to stay alive, keep quiet tonight. Contact this number first thing in the morning." Samuel placed a business card on the nearby coffee table.
Then, he smiled and left Pine Ridge Gardens.
Ruth looked around, took a deep breath, and like a thief, grabbed the business card and clutched it tightly.
The next day, the wind howled.
Maple Valley's autumn was usually calm. Such a fierce storm was rare.
