Chapter 27 Unspoken Fear
It was a fateful night when Isabella finally gathered the courage to reveal the secret that had been weighing heavily on her heart. She decided to confide in Sebastian, hoping that he would understand and offer her comfort.
As the moon cast its gentle glow upon their faces, she took a deep breath and began to speak.
"Sebastian, there's something I've been meaning to tell you," Isabella uttered hesitantly, her voice filled with both apprehension and longing. "I've always known, deep down, that our nights together could lead to unexpected consequences. And now, that reality has come upon us."
As she spoke these words, her eyes shone with both sadness and resignation, yet her voice carried a quiet strength. She knew that her role as a lover came with its own set of risks and responsibilities.
"Last night, you took me twice," she continued, her voice barely above a whisper. "Both times, there was no protection. I could have stopped you, could have insisted, but I chose not to. Instead, I carried the weight of our unspoken fears with me."
Sebastian listened intently, his eyes fixed upon her. He had always been a light sleeper, any slight disturbance around him would immediately rouse him from his slumber. And on this particular night, he sensed the trembling of the woman lying beside him.
Isabella, huddled in a ball, clutched her hands tightly in front of her. Tremors coursed through her body, her forehead creased with worry, and her lips turned pale.
"There are snakes, spiders... and ghosts," she murmured, her voice barely audible. "There's a graveyard, a haunting presence... Please, stay away from me. Don't come any closer... just go!"
With each word she spoke, fear gripped her heart tighter, suffocating her. The weight of their actions and the future they could not predict were burdensome, threatening to tear them apart.
Sebastian, fully awake now, carefully reached out and gently brushed the tendrils of hair away from her face.
"Isabella, my love," he whispered, his voice filled with tenderness. "I understand your fears, and I share them too.
Let us face this together, hand in hand. No matter what awaits us, I promise to protect you, to be by your side every step of the way. We shall find solace in the face of uncertainty."
As his words washed over her, Isabella's trembling began to subside, and a glimmer of hope flickered in her eyes. She took comfort in the knowledge that she was not alone in this journey, that together, they would navigate the uncharted path ahead.
And so, they embraced, two souls entwined in a moment of vulnerability and strength, ready to face whatever lay ahead, come what may.
"Wake up, Isabella, wake up."
But she was still immersed in a nightmare: "Go away, help... help me, is anyone there, save me..."
"Sebastian, Sebastian... save me, I don't want to die, I don't want to die..."
"I'm so scared... where am I, help..."
Isabella's body trembled harder, layers of sweat forming on her forehead, soaking her hair.
"Isabella," Sebastian picked her up, holding her in his arms.
"wake up, don't fall asleep."
He called several times before finally waking Isabella up from her nightmare.
Isabella opened her eyes, her gaze still blank, with bloodshot eyes, causing Sebastian's heart to tighten.
"It's alright, that was just a dream, it's a dream, not reality." Sebastian comforted her while holding her, "Now that you're awake, everything is fine."
She opened her mouth, her voice hoarse, "A dream?"
"Yes, you just had a nightmare."
Isabella stared at the ceiling in a daze, as if she had lost her soul. Seeing her like this made Sebastian anxious: "Don't be like this, it's just a dream, it's not real. This is Willow-brook Estate, we're at home, I'm sleeping next to you, I will protect you, you won't be harmed."
He wasn't sure what Isabella had gone through before his arrival, but it must have exceeded her ability to endure in her twenty-plus years of existence.
"A dream? No, it's not, Sebastian, that's not a dream..." Isabella said, "It's real, it's true, I dreamt about what happened to me in that forest today."
"Just that one time, it won't happen again."
"A spider the size of a palm crawling on me... and many unknown bugs, not to mention the rats."
She recalled in a murmured voice, "I saw snakes hanging from trees, spitting venom..."
"I ran for my life, feeling like I was going to die there. Finally, when I ran out of the woods, I found myself in a graveyard..."
"It was so terrifying. What if I got bitten by a venomous snake? What if I fell into some unknown cave? What if I starved or froze to death..."
Sebastian interrupted her words, "No, it won't happen, you won't die."
Two lines of tears streamed down the corners of Isabella's eyes. He tightened his arms and kissed away the tears at the corner of her eye
"I'll be with you, sleep well and don't think about those things anymore."
Seeing her like this, his heart ached.
"I can't forget..." Isabella replied, "When I close my eyes now, I'll recall those scenes."
"They're all in the past."
"Sebastian." She sniffed, "You know, if I hadn't married you, I wouldn't have experienced all this, right?"
He stiffened slightly.
"I can probably guess who played such a wicked trick on me..." Isabella looked at him, "It was Grace, wasn't it?"
However, I have no evidence. At the hospital, she was the only one who hated me."
At this moment, Sebastian dare not meet her gaze. He can only turn his head, lower his body, and rest his chin on her shoulder: "I will find the one responsible."
"Sebastian, do you think it could be Grace?"
"Whether it is or not, there will be a conclusion." He gently stroked her long hair. "Are you going to sleep?"
"I'm afraid of having nightmares..."
"I'll stay with you." Sebastian whispered into her ear. "Until you're no longer afraid."
He laid her down and embraced her, like comforting a child, gently patting her back, over and over again.
Sebastian had never done these things before, but strangely enough, he does them effortlessly and naturally when he is with Isabella.
