Chapter 243 The Assistant Assigned Is Isabella?

Joshua entered the elevator, heaving breaths of exhaustion, with several tiny pinholes from IV insertions itching faintly on the back of his hand. He glanced at them and let out a wry chuckle. After leaving his company, Joshua contacted Kaine to take care of a task.

Once everything was arranged, Joshua squinted at the stars overhead and shrugged his shoulders, realizing that helping Sebastian was probably the only thing he could do now.

The next day. early in the morning, as Isabella was finishing her breakfast, she received a call from Kaine.

Thinking it was Sebastian enslaving her again, her enthusiasm waned. "Kaine, Lawrence... does Mr. Lawrence have any instructions?"

Isabella was fully alert, now that it was out in the open. There were only two roles for Sebastian to have; the first was being the father of her child and the second was CEO of the Lawrence Group.

So, it seemed inappropriate for her to call him by his first name anymore.

"Mrs. Lawrence, um... the decision from above is that you are to go on a business trip to San Francisco."

Isabella wiped away the milk stain on her mouth. "A business trip?"

Kaine replied, "Yes, you are to go in the capacity of an assistant."

Isabella could only an "Oh," then asked, "Which manager will be accompanying me?"

Kaine apologized, "Sorry, Mrs. Lawrence, I'm not privy to that information. I was just notified from the top to inform you."

Isabella experienced heart palpitations for a few seconds, the pain lingering even as it returned to normal.

This was another one of Sebastian's old tricks, wasn't it? Sending her off to a local branch, entrusting her to someone else's torment, trying to wear her down so she'd beg, to never dare defy his orders again.

"All right, I understand. Please send me the flight details, Kaine."

"Yes, Mrs. Lawrence."

Isabella hung up the phone, fiercely stabbing her fork into her sandwich. She wouldn't submit, she wouldn't allow Sebastian to tread on her dignity again. This business trip would be completed with flying colors!

The butler who had been observing was taken aback by her change in mood, "Mrs. Lawrence, are you... all right?"

Isabella offered a thin smile. "Oh, do I not look all right?"

The butler nodded then, under her gaze, quickly shook his head.

[Ding.]

Kaine had sent the flight details.

With the plane leaving in two hours, Isabella had no time to waste. She finished her meal and without delay, went upstairs to pack her bags.

At ten in the morning, Isabella arrived at the airport ahead of schedule. After going through security, she headed to the lounge to wait for her boss, whom she would be accompanying on a business trip.

Half an hour later, the doors of the lounge quietly swung open, revealing a pair of slender legs clad in dress pants moved inside, leading to an impressive physique with broad shoulders tapering into a narrow back.

A deep, husky male voice resonated from the figure on the phone: "You've arranged an assistant? What about Kaine?"

Isabella recognized that unmistakable voice down to her core but chose not to look up. Gripping her bag tightly, she averted her gaze, trying to focus elsewhere, amidst the chatter of other people in the lounge, Isabella could only hear Sebastian's voice.

Sebastian's voice cut through the noise, "Joshua, you really have too much time on your hands."

As Sebastian finished his sentence, Isabella felt a penetrating gaze settle on her. Putting the pieces together from Sebastian's words, she had pieced everything together.

She realized that the person scheduled for the business trip to San Francisco was Sebastian, and Kaine was supposed to accompany him. Joshua had interfered, colluding with Kaine to have her assigned as Sebastian's assistant.

No wonder Kaine had been so hesitant on the phone that morning.

Isabella felt a surge of frustration. Had she somehow offended Joshua in the past? Was it just because she had once called him a womanizer?

It seemed that, just like Sebastian's close friend, both men apparently couldn't handle the truth.

With a slight twitch of her mouth, Isabella ceased avoiding reality. As the intense gaze bore down on her, she rose from her seat.

Her hands elegantly folded in front of her, resting just above her waist. Isabella inclined her head slightly and spoke in a neutral tone, "Mr. Lawrence."

Given Sebastian's towering stature, with head her lowered, he could only see the crown of her head. Her submissive, emotionless demeanor, characteristic of someone in a subordinate role, seemed to ignite a flicker of irritation in Sebastian.

Adjusting his tie with a cold demeanor matching Isabella's. Exuding an air of superiority, he addressed, " In his absence, you will be in charge. Do not disappoint ."

"Yes, Mr. Lawrence."

Sebastian walked past Isabella to sit down and began working on his laptop. Isabella paused momentarily from the spot she was standing before returning to her own seat.

Because she was not far from Sebastian, she didn't need to look at him directly; a sidelong glance was enough.

His composed demeanor, the precise movements of his fingers dancing across the keyboard, clearly conveyed that he didn't feel the least bit awkward about her being there.

To Sebastian, she seemed no more than a regular assistant, a fact that contrasted sharply with her own feelings. The subtle dynamics at play between them hinted at a deeper connection, influenced by unspoken emotions..

In that moment, as she observed him, a realization dawned on Isabella. Perhaps this was the stark disparity between love and indifference.

Grandma words echoed in Isabella's mind, resonating with truth as she reflected on the traits that defined a heartless man with Lawrence lineage.

Isabella felt a surge of frustration, she clenched her fist and pulled out her cellphone, texting Kaine to inform her of the details for her business trip.

Kaine, sensing Isabella's discovery, responded promptly with a thorough list of precautions and insights into the branch managers' profiles .

Once Isabella clarified the meeting agenda and hotel address, the airport announcement signaled the boarding call for passengers traveling flying from New York to San Francisco.

As predicted, Sebastian's seat was right next to hers on the flight. She had gone to pour herself a glass of water and upon returning, found Sebastian seated on the aisle.

The first-class cabin was spacious and luxurious. The problem was, out of all the seats, only Isabella’s and Sebastian’s were squeezed together.

She needed to get past Sebastian to settle back into her seat. With his long legs crossed and eyes closed in a seemingly relaxed state, he completely blocked her path.

Isabella could see his intentions—he wanted her to politely ask him to move.

"Mr. Lawrence," Isabella called out. "Could you please move your legs?"

Sebastian, unresponsive, with a magazine covering his face, didn’t budge.

With a sarcastic smile, Isabella understood that it's better to rely on oneself than to ask politely. Lifting her leg, she attempted to step over.

Suddenly, the plane hit turbulence. Isabella lost her balance, and ended up tilting the glass in her hand and spilling warm water towards—of all places—Sebastian's lower abdomen.

Eyes widening and pupils shrinking, Isabella gasped. Goodness, was fate playing tricks on her?

A hoarse grunt escaped beneath the magazine covering Sebastian's face.

Only three words crossed Isabella's mind, ‘I am doomed.’

Her mind went blank as she rapidly pulled out tissue paper, leaning over in an attempt to dry Sebastian’s clothes as fast as she could.

Sebastian, who hadn’t slept well the night before, leaned back in his seat for a bit of rest when Isabella interrupted him with her rigid voice. Despite his lingering annoyance, he saw no reason to entertain her. However, his tranquility was short-lived, warm water unexpectedly splashed over him.
