Chapter 91 A Man Breaking the Norm for a Woman
A gust of wind brushed through them, lifting Brittany's skirt.
"If there's nothing else, it seems like it's about time to call it a day, Joshua."
"Don't meddle in Sebastian's affairs," Joshua said. "He's not someone you should provoke."
"I never intended to interfere."
"But now that you and Isabella have become so close, I have a feeling that someday it will happen."
Brittany adjusted her tousled hair. "I just never realized that men can be so indecisive when it comes to emotions."
"You wouldn't understand Sebastian."
"Yeah, I don't understand. But why should I?" Brittany replied, smiling. "I don't understand any man, including you."
As she spoke, there was laughter in her voice.
Joshua longed to reach out and touch her, just a slight touch, because even embracing had become a luxury.
"I’ll let Joshua have this rooftop," Brittany turned around. "I won't come here anymore."
She was about to lose even this one place of freedom.
Yet, it was here that she and Joshua had first kissed, where they had embraced... so intimately.
Tuesday.
Isabella has essentially recovered, her complexion gradually regaining a rosy hue, so going to the company is not really a problem anymore.
However, this illness seems to have changed her somewhat from before.
In those bright and large eyes, the brightness seems to have dimmed quite a bit, not like it used to be.
She sits at the dining table, lowering her head to hold the spoon, slowly drinking the red date and wolfberry porridge, quickly finishing a bowl.
"I've finished eating." Isabella wipes her mouth, "Can I go to Lawrence Group today?"
Sebastian lifts his coffee cup. "Sure."
"After lying at home for two days, I suddenly kind of miss going to work." Isabella rests her cheek on her hand, "Once you get busy... time flies by so quickly."
As she speaks, she ponders something, looking at him. "Do you feel the same way? After getting busy, the day just passes by. Day in and day out, year after year, it becomes a routine. Doesn't it feel boring, or even lonesome?"
He glances at her. "What do you want to ask?"
"Nothing, just curious." Isabella responds, "You see, you're several years older than me. How did you spend all these years when you were alone? Didn't it feel unpleasant? After all, humans are social animals."
Sebastian furrows his brow slightly.
It seems like the first time someone has asked him how he has spent these years.
He seems... to not remember much.
Taking over Lawrence Group, initiating sweeping reforms, downsizing, developing new pillar industries, work occupied the majority of his time.
Loneliness? Occasionally, perhaps. But he actually doesn't pay much attention to it.
Success is the ultimate goal.
The journey to the highest place is always long and lonely. Standing in high places is always bitterly cold.
"No feeling." Sebastian responds, "That's how it is."
Isabella is disappointed with his answer and sighs. "Alright. You truly are an emotionless work machine."
Sebastian doesn't argue.
"Let's go to the company. Don't keep Kaine waiting too long. I imagine you'll be busy as ever today." Isabella stands up. "As your little tail, I'll naturally be busy too."
After recovering from her illness, she is in much better spirits and has resumed her usual talkativeness.
The driver is driving, while Sebastian and Isabella sit in the back seat.
She takes a bottle of milk to drink, absentmindedly biting her lip, and gazes out the window at the passing scenes. Then, unexpectedly, the car suddenly slams on the brakes.
Isabella's whole body leans forward, and the milk spills out, dropping onto her pants and foot mat.
Being in the habit of not wearing a seatbelt in the back seat, she nearly collided forward.
Fortunately, Sebastian quickly reached out his hand, holding her and guiding her back onto her seat.
At the same time, his displeased voice coldly exclaims, "What's going on?"
The driver hurriedly explains, "Mr. Lawrence, someone stopped the car, I had no choice but to brake suddenly."
Just then, a figure appears outside the car window.
"And the door was knocked on as well. Sebastian lowered the car window, his face looking grim, while he handed Isabella tissues and asked, 'Risking your life, huh?'
"Mr. Lawrence, I had no other choice..." A middle-aged man of around fifty outside the car spoke, his face filled with a smile. 'It's about Bob in our family. You see, can we reconcile our differences?'
"Reconcile?" Isabella finally realized that this person was from the Watson lineage.
"Yes, Mr. Lawrence, I'm Bob's cousin. We promise to reflect on and educate Bob, preventing him from doing such foolish things again. You're a well-respected grown man, don't stoop to his level."
"No reconciliation." Sebastian retorted with just two words and closed the car window, paying no attention to the man's pounding. "Keep driving."
"Yes, Mr. Lawrence."
Sebastian lowered his head and wiped the milk off from Isabella's hand before looking up at her. "Where else did you get dirty?"
"On my pants..." Isabella replied. "It's on my pants."
Sebastian glanced at it. "Go buy a new pair at the store."
Well, going back would indeed be troublesome.
When Sebastian and Isabella arrived at the company, it caused a stir, though it was all whispers and gossip among the employees.
Isabella felt that something was off in the way people looked at her, different from before, but she couldn't pinpoint what exactly was different.
Maintaining this sense of doubt, Isabella called Emily only when she got to her office.
"For this matter, you have to ask yourself," Emily said. "Everyone in the entire Lawrence Group knows that hardworking Mr. Lawrence didn't show up at the company all day yesterday because of you!"
"Just for this?"
"Isn't that explosive enough? He made an exception for you, my silly Isabella. Do you realize what it means for a man to make an exception for a woman?"
Isabella had a strange feeling about this in her heart.
She couldn't say she was happy, but she also couldn't face this matter calmly.
Sebastian indeed made an exception for her, staying at home with her for a day. While he reviewed documents, she sat or lay beside him.
"That's because I was sick..." Isabella replied. "I was really uncomfortable. If you don't care about me, fine, but to think you're more concerned about gossip."
Emily cut her off, "How sick could you possibly be? Fever, coughing, worst-case scenario, vomiting and diarrhea. If not that, what else can happen to you?"
"It's still very uncomfortable..."
"With Mr. Lawrence by your side, is it still uncomfortable?"
Isabella was speechless. "Emily, can you... can you please stop revolving every sentence around Sebastian?"
Isabella: "..."
“Oh, because he’s my benefactor! Without him, how would I have gotten this job? How could we have the opportunity to be together anytime, anywhere?”
