Chapter 75 But That Woman is Not Me
"Yeah! Do I work for nothing?"
Sebastian asked. "What about the black card I gave you last night?"
"It's in my bag."
"Still not enough?" he said. "That's my supplementary card. Whatever amount is spent with it each month is equivalent to your salary."
Isabella blinked. "It kind of feels like being kept..."
"Being kept doesn't come with as many demands as you have."
"Oh? It seems like you have a lot of experience and understanding," she teased.
Sebastian retorted, "What do you think?"
"Well, I wouldn't know... Mr. Lawrence is skilled and has his ways, after all, who knows what kind of experiences he has been through."
He lifted her chin. "Next time, I'll let you experience it properly!"
Isabella wasn't afraid. He had messed with her twice yesterday, each time so harshly, so today he would definitely let her off the hook.
In the evening, at the restaurant. Isabella and Emily arrived around the same time.
"This is a gift for your job," Isabella pushed the exquisitely wrapped box towards her, "I hope your new job goes smoothly."
"Wow... what is this?"
"A watch."
"That must be expensive." Emily's eyes showed a hint of timidity, "It's too expensive, I can't accept it."
"It's fine, it's from a lesser-known brand, not expensive. Please take it. Brittany and I picked it together for you."
Emily nodded, "Okay, once I receive my salary, I'll treat you to a meal."
"You've done enough for me, Emily. We've been good friends for so many years, let's not worry about these things."
"Mhmm!"
Brittany walked over, seeing the two of them engrossed in conversation, she smiled and said, "Sorry to keep you waiting."
"Isabella and I just arrived as well," Emily looked at her, "You must be Brittany, right? She mentioned you to me. Thank you for helping pick the gift, I really like it."
Brittany smiled gently, "I'm glad you like it."
Isabella took the opportunity to say, "Emily also works at the Lawrance Group, so we can meet often in the future."
"Really? That's great."
As they say, three women make a play. Emily had a very cheerful personality and got along easily with everyone, making it easy for them to become friends.
They opened a bottle of red wine, each of them had a few sips, and their cheeks turned slightly flushed.
Isabella, however, remembered that she had promised Sebastian to be home by half-past eight... She thought she could get away with being a little late.
If all else failed, she could just coax him.
Emily drank the most and had a very low tolerance, so Isabella had her driver take her home, as she didn't feel at ease otherwise.
Watching the departing car, Brittany chuckled, "Emily is such a lovely girl."
"Yeah, carefree and without any hidden motives."
"You had your driver take her home, what about you?" Brittany asked, "I'll take you home."
"Sure." Isabella nodded, "That would be great, thank you."
Brittany's car was a red Mercedes sedan, suitable for a girl, and matched her image and temperament.
The car traveled smoothly on the road.
Isabella turned her head to look at the driving Brittany, "You give me the impression of a very independent woman. Doing everything by yourself. Driving, having a career, taking luggage from the trunk, moving packages..."
Brittany smiled, "If I don't do it myself, who else will?"
"... But you and Joshua, you had a good relationship before, right? He seemed to love you and dote on you. He wouldn't let you do these things alone."
Brittany's expression stiffened, "Let's not talk about him, Isabella."
“I know you don’t want to hear it. But every time I see Joshua’s gaze on you... it’s different.”
"What's different? It's just his own obsession, not wanting to let me go like this. But clearly... he is the one at fault."
Softly, Isabella said, “It’s terrible that emotions have reached this point, isn’t it?”
"Mm."
"I also had a fiancé before, stable relationship, he treated me well. I won't say how much I loved him, but I thought spending a lifetime with him was a good life choice. But..." Isabella said, "he changed."
Brittany turned her head and glanced at her. “Changed? He... cheated too?”
"I don't know if it counts. Because he recently bought a house in Souther Mansion, people say it's for marriage, and we had just broken up a while ago."
“So, when he was with you, he already had a backup plan.”
"He said he had no choice, too many family interests involved, hoping I could understand him."
“Bullshit!” Brittany couldn’t help but curse, “He can say such things!”
"Yeah, that's why I didn't love him so much, felt disgusted even. Not to mention you, who once loved Joshua deeply. And moreover, when I was in my most difficult time, he didn't come out to help me." Isabella smiled, unsure if it was a relief or self-mockery, "Instead, Sebastian appeared."
Brittany tightened her grip on the steering wheel ever so slightly. “You and Sebastian...”
"Elopement." Isabella said, "We got married the second day we met."
The sound of brakes echoed.
Brittany parked the car on the side of the road, turned on the hazard lights, and looked at her in surprise. "You eloped?"
“Yes.”
"Do you know Sebastian? Do you know what kind of person he is? Do you think this marriage will be happy?" Brittany kept asking, "I always thought you knew him for a long time, just being well-protected by him, and I haven't met him yet."
Sebastian is an unpredictable person, he doesn't do things in the usual way, it's difficult for ordinary people to figure him out.
But Brittany had been with Joshua, so her relationship with Sebastian was relatively good, plus they were college classmates, she knew more about his character.
"Actually..." Isabella said, "There truly is a woman who is well-protected by him. But that woman isn't me."
Brittany fell silent, and the car fell into silence.
After a while, she finally said, "Isabella, you did it on purpose. You intentionally ordered red wine, then had the driver take Emily back, and took the opportunity to sit in my car and say these things, trying to coax the information you wanted to get."
"I didn't, even though this explanation may sound feeble." Isabella sincerely looked at her, "I admit that I did think about wanting to ask you some questions about Sebastian, but today was not deliberately arranged."
Brittany met her gaze.
The two girls just sat there...
Watching each other in silence, Brittany extended her hand and gently touched Isabella's hair. "Isabella, I haven't had a friend for a very long time."
"You have, Brittany. If you're willing to consider me as a friend."
"I would be delighted to. Ever since you accidentally broke that bottle of perfume today, I knew we would be great friends," Brittany responded. "That's why I was so shocked when I found out about your sudden marriage."
