Chapter 349 Just Reminiscing About First Love
"Larry, are you okay? Did anyone bother you at the police station? And why are you here?" The more she spoke, the tighter her brow furrowed, and her nerves became more strained. "Let me take you to change your clothes first."
"Brittany, I came here to find you," Larry interrupted solemnly. "And what about you? What are you doing here? I had someone check Joshua's address, and this is Joshua's territory."
Brittany's gaze faltered slightly, a subtle evasion in her eyes. "Larry, don't worry about me."
"How can I not worry? I'm not a fool. That jerk, did he use me to threaten you?" Larry's eyes flickered with a hint of pain as he forcibly grabbed her wrist. "Come with me, leave Joshua. He's toxic."
As a doctor, Larry had a kind heart, and even when angry, he acted with kindness and gentleness.
Brittany knew deep down that Larry genuinely cared for her, but she couldn't accept his kindness.
She pulled her hand away, speaking earnestly, "Larry, it's over between him and me. I'm just here to retrieve my belongings. I had sent you the address of the house before. You go home and rest for now, and we can talk properly another day. Is that okay?"
Brittany's tone was cool, grateful yet distant.
Larry's hand hung by his side, a pang in his heart as he let out a soft sigh.
He wanted to say something, but the words caught in his throat.
It wasn't the right time yet. Although Larry liked Brittany, he didn't want to push her.
'Take it slow,' he thought to himself. Larry believed he would succeed one day as long as he didn't give up,.
Larry suddenly felt much lighter in his heart.
"What are you retrieving? I'll go with you. I'll wait outside for you. I won't come in or disturb you in any way." Larry's mouth curved into a gentle smile, lightly patting Brittany's arm, asking, "Is that okay?"
Brittany had no reason to refuse, so she nodded. "Thank you, Larry."
"Don't mention it. I'm your brother. It's my pleasure to help you," Larry said gently.
It was this statement that made Brittany feel less awkward standing next to Larry.
She relaxed a bit and began to ask about Larry's health.
Larry breathed a sigh of relief and calmly answered each question. Standing by Brittany's side, his gaze swept over her delicate shoulders, filled with heartache.
He clenched his fists, resisting the urge to pull Brittany into his arms.
"Larry, here we are." the elevator doors opened, and the two stepped out. Brittany halted in front of the door. "Wait a moment. I'll make it quick."
Larry's smile was serene and kind. He was dressed in a wrinkled suit that didn't diminish his gentle demeanor. "Sure, take your time. Once you're ready, I'll take you away. We won't come back here again. We're moving on to a better life."
"Okay," Brittany replied.
With that, Brittany walked towards the door, twisting the handle, and the door was unlocked.
Was Joshua back?
Brittany hesitated. She didn't expect him to return so soon.
Frowning, she considered leaving immediately.
But then she thought to herself, 'Forget it. Since I'm already here, let this be the end of it all. I don't want to come back a second time.'
Taking a deep breath, she straightened her posture and approached.
To her surprise, Joshua wasn't in the living room. It was quiet inside, except for his suit jacket thrown on the sofa, indicating he had been there but had left again.
Brittany felt a bit more at ease now.
She bent down, collecting all her belongings from the coffee table, desk, and cabinets in the living room.
In a rush to leave, she didn't bother organizing, simply stuffing everything into a bag she found nearby.
Within a few minutes, Brittany had gathered her things from the living room.
Next was the bedroom, where her work files were kept.
Approaching the door, Brittany grasped the handle and twisted it.
It didn't budge.
Confused, Brittany wondered if Joshua was inside.
Since the door was locked, it was most likely the thing.
Embarrassed, Brittany released the handle.
As she was about to knock, a grating moan seeped through the door crack.
"Joshua, hurry up." It was Nicole's voice.
Brittany froze in place.
She stood motionless, hand raised.
Only a fool wouldn't understand what was happening in the bedroom.
Brittany had lived here for about a month, and she knew how excellent the house's soundproofing was. Unless there was a loud noise, it was impossible to hear what was happening inside from outside.
It was evident that the two inside were engaged in something very intense, given the volume of Nicole's cries.
Brittany's body stiffened, memories of the past merging with the current situation.
Her face turned pale in an instant, Nicole's varying tones of coquettishness and aggression voice entwined around her heart like snakes.
But Joshua and Nicole were an engaged couple, and their actions were justified.
'What does it matter to you, Brittany? Stay calm, stay calm.' Brittany clenched her fists, warning herself repeatedly.
But it didn't work. Brittany's heart continued to ache, still affected by the rekindled pain of betrayal.
Brittany felt suffocated. She opened her mouth slightly, finding it hard to breathe.
Her temples throbbed, feeling like they might burst..
She didn't dare stay any longer. Forget about the documents or the materials. She didn't want to get them anymore.
However, just as she was about to turn around, she heard voices from inside.
"Joshua, you went to Maple Valley University with Brittany today. I'm so unhappy." Nicole's voice sounded very aggrieved.
"What's wrong with that?" Joshua replied lazily. "It was just reminiscing about first love. Unfortunately, things have changed, and there was no heart-fluttering feeling."
"Really?" Nicole asked.
"Of course, it's true. Being with Brittany feels far worse than being with you. But," Joshua chuckled, then he continued, "She was quite emotional, asking me why I cheated."
"And did you answer?" Nicole asked.
"No. I'm not living with her anymore," Joshua answered.
Nicole chuckled, "Joshua, Brittany is very proud. It must have taken a lot for Brittany to open up like that. She must care about you a great deal. Did she cry?"
Joshua laughed lightly, "Many people love me; she's nothing special. She did cry, though. Brittany looks terrible when she cries now that she's older. It's actually painful to look at. Did you see her face?I mean, you two are practically the same age, right? What's with her aging so badly?"
These words were colder than a blade, piercing the heart.
Her limbs felt like lead, each movement an effort.
