Chapter 173 Argument
But she couldn't avoid it. Three days later, he wanted her answer.
"Brittany, hate me, the more the better. That way, in the future, you won't cry or be sad over me. For some people, a lifetime is very long. And for others, their lifetime is very short."
...
In the evening, at Willowbrook Estate.
The busy servants all thought that today would be the same as before; once Mr. Lawrence and his wife returned, the atmosphere would become incredibly tense..
But unexpectedly...
There was laughter and cheerful voices coming from the garden.
"Swing higher, Sebastian, push harder... wow... hahahaha, I'm going to fly!"
Isabella sat on the swing, gripping the ropes beside her, swinging high, her laughter echoed throughout Willowbrook Estate.
Sebastian stood behind her, dutifully and reluctantly pushing the swing.
Watching her swing higher and higher, her hair dancing in the air, laughing non-stop, she looked like a carefree young girl.
"If you go any higher, you'll fly out," he said, "you really enjoy playing, don’t you?"
Despite his tone of mild complaint, Sebastian's hands continued pushing the swing without rest.
The butler stood by, seeing this scene unfold, smiling from ear to ear.
Ah, Mr. Lawrence and his wife have finally reconciled, and life will get better for them!
Otherwise, it was either arguments or cold wars every day, making everyone on edge.
Isabella turned her head and said, "Come sit with me."
"It's time for dinner," Sebastian stopped the swing, "weren't you saying you were hungry?"
"Alright then." Isabella jumped down, landing steadily on the ground, "I've had enough fun."
Isabella headed straight inside, with Sebastian following behind her, a smile on his lips.
However, Isabella ate very little, hardly having any meat.
Sebastian noticed: "You're eating so lightly?"
"Ah... I've gained weight recently, trying to diet." Isabella spoke casually, "Eating vegetables is quite nice and healthy."
In fact, she feared eating meat because it tended to make her feel nauseous and sick.
Although it's highly likely that she was pregnant, this news... could not yet be shared with Sebastian.
Big news like pregnancy, if it were to be announced, must serve some purpose.
Right now, Isabella didn't know what she could use her pregnancy for, but she had a vague intuition that there would come a time when it would be useful.
"Nutrition should be balanced," Sebastian said, "you shouldn't be picky with food."
"I just don't feel like eating it, what's wrong with being a bit picky?"
Sebastian frowned slightly but didn’t want to force her.
"Did you visit Joshua today?" he asked casually, "What for?"
"He's bullying Brittany."
"That's impossible."
Isabella looked at him curiously, "You don't even ask what happened; how can you be so certain that it's impossible? Hey, do you know something?"
Sebastian paused for a moment, "What did you say to Joshua?"
"It wasn't much. I was just really angry about how he treated Brittany, and then he said that he was the only person in the world who would never hurt Brittany. Don't you think that sounds funny?"
"Maybe he was telling the truth?"
Isabella grew more curious, "That would mean that both of you definitely have some unspeakable secrets."
"There are no secrets," Sebastian said, "and nothing unspeakable."
"Then tell me."
"It's simple. Joshua loves Brittany." Sebastian put some vegetables on her plate, "That's all there is to it."
"Love is bullying her, harassing her, making her sad?" Isabella asked, "Is this how you and Joshua show your love? Not by protecting her, taking care of her?"
"You don't understand," Sebastian said with downcast eyes, "you'll get it eventually... someday."
"Joshua said the same thing today."
"Don't meddle in their affairs."
"But Brittany is my friend," Isabella replied, "If I don't question him on her behalf, Joshua will become even more arrogant. He's almost engaged; doesn't he know to keep away from other women?"
Sebastian paused in his action of picking up vegetables, "What do you mean by 'other women'?"
Isabella: "I don't know."
Sebastian's lips quirked.
Isabella: "Forget it, it's useless talking to you men. Let's just eat."
After dinner, Isabella returned to her bedroom, and Sebastian went to his study; he had some matters to deal with.
Isabella tried calling Brittany again, but still, no one answered.
She worried about what could be happening to her.
After reading for a while, Isabella decided to take a shower. Wearing her bathrobe, she came out of the bathroom to find Sebastian already lying in bed.
He leaned against the headboard, the top few buttons of his shirt undone, revealing his solid chest, his eyes slightly downcast, as if deep in thought.
Hearing footsteps, he looked up at her.
"You're done with your work?" Isabella asked, toweling off her hair, "It's early, just eight o'clock."
"I finished quickly so I could spend more time with you."
She quipped, "Did you put honey on your lips or something?"
Sebastian's mouth curved into a slight smile, "Try it and see. It's sweet."
The two hadn't had such a peaceful interaction in a long time.
Moreover, they tacitly avoided mentioning Lynda.
Sebastian wanted this superficial calm, so she played along.
But how long this could last was anybody's guess.
Isabella just glared at him, kept drying her hair, and walked toward the walk-in closet.
Just as she stepped through the door of the walk-in closet, Sebastian's voice faintly drifted over, "Don't get dressed."
She stopped mid-step, "Why? What? What do you want?"
"I want you."
Isabella froze for several seconds before she realized what he meant.
Her face flushed with heat: "I don't understand what you're saying."
Hurriedly dropping those words, Isabella quickly walked into the closet.
But Sebastian's voice still hauntingly carried over: "It'll be a hassle to take it off later if you put it on now."
"..."
Standing in front of the closet, looking at her pajamas, Isabella's mind was racing.
Sebastian tonight... He probably wants to...
During the days they had been arguing, he must have been suffering too. Now that she had temporarily softened and became obedient, he would not let her go.
But, she might be pregnant now.
What should she do to avoid sleeping with him?
Staying here too long also wasn't an option.
Just as this thought flashed through her mind, his voice arose: "Does changing into pajamas always take this long?"
"Coming," Isabella changed into her pajamas and slowly made her way out, "Why the rush, you haven't even showered yet, after a busy day you should rest early."
"We can shower together later."
Sebastian's implication couldn't be any clearer.
Isabella nervously swallowed but still tried to act as if nothing was amiss.
She stood by the bed, and Sebastian's hand had already reached out, directly pulling her into his embrace.
