Chapter 158 Congenital Heart Disease
"Lynda, you don't look well today," Isabella took a seat opposite her. "Is it because you spent last night alone and didn't rest well?"
Lynda took a sip of tea. "I'm sick."
"Oh, I know you have delicate health, but I've always been curious, what illness do you have exactly?"
Lynda smiled. "Sebastian didn't tell you?"
"Why would he mention it to me? I never asked," Isabella replied. "But this illness of yours, it makes you unable to conceive, right?"
Upon hearing the word "conceive," Lynda visibly became unhappy.
She was unhappy, while Isabella was pleased.
She beckoned the waiter over. "A cup of black coffee, please."
"If I could conceive, there would be no need for you to be arrogant in front of me," Lynda clenched her teeth. "You just picked up the pieces!"
"But in this society, a woman who can't bear children generally isn't accepted." Isabella stated.
Lynda's emotions grew heated. "I can bear children!"
"Oh, I see, you can bear children. My mistake." Isabella smiled.
"I apologize, I didn't mean to offend you. Since you can bear children, why did Sebastian choose me?"
"Sebastian pities and sympathizes with me. He doesn't want me to bear children!"
"Yes, that's right, Sebastian is quite caring," Isabella nodded repeatedly to show agreement.
"That's why he sought me out, to share a bed, to revel through the nights. Can you accept that too?"
Lynda's face turned as red as liver.
Isabella took a sip of her coffee.
"Mm, delicious. Oh, Lynda, why only tea for you? Aren't you ordering any drinks? Or perhaps your illness prohibits you from drinking coffee?"
Lynda stared at her intently.
Isabella gained a slight boost in her mood from gaining an advantage in their exchange and stirred her coffee slowly.
"Since the day I met you, I knew that you, as a woman, are not to be trifled with," Lynda said. "I can't argue with you. However, no matter how sharp-tongued you are, it doesn't change the fact that you are only a stepping stone for me."
Isabella chuckled.
"Nothing is absolute, Lynda. It's possible that I'll be sitting in Mrs. Lawrence's position forever."
"That's impossible!"
"Nothing is impossible. You should know that the Lawrence family stands by my side. And the child... is mine. Blood ties, close kinship. Do you think my position will be low?"
Lynda lifted her chin.
"As long as I'm here, Isabella, you'll never succeed!"
"We'll see about that."
Confrontation was something Isabella excelled at.
If Lynda came to her and brought up the child, well, then she would bring up the child too. The child was hers, carrying half of her blood.
So, what if Lynda, this stepmother, is arrogant? Besides, Lynda is nothing more than a hen that can't lay eggs.
Even though she is the one being used in this game, the one who will fail, she must show her strength and not let Lynda trample over her.
"Isabella, I do envy your confidence," Lynda said, "Of course, you indeed have the confidence, after all, you will be Sebastian's child’s biological mother. This is where I can't surpass you."
"No worries, even if you try your best, you can still have one yourself. With technology being so advanced these days, what if you find the right medical solution for yourself?"
"It seems you really don't know what disease I have."
"Feel free to tell me."
Lynda replied, "Congenital heart disease."
Isabella's hand, holding the coffee, trembled slightly.
"I couldn't engage in vigorous activities since I was young, never attended physical education classes. I can't experience extreme joy or sadness, avoiding emotional fluctuations. I have to carry medication with me at all times and take it on schedule." Lynda said, "Now, it has gotten much better."
"So, that's how it is? I understand now why you can't have children and why the Lawrence family has such a strong dislike for you."
"If I were to forcefully get pregnant, I might die. Moreover, this disease... has a hereditary possibility."
The Lawrence family would never gamble with the next generation.
So, apart from Sebastian's insistence, no one else had any favorable opinion of Lynda.
"Why not get a heart transplant?" Isabella grinned, "It's not impossible."
Lynda looked at her, "Sebastian has said the same thing."
"Well, then you should give it a try."
"There are risks in surgery," Lynda answered, "If it fails, I won't survive the operation. Even if the success rate is high, there's no guarantee of error-free outcomes."
Isabella raised her eyes to meet hers, "Why are you telling me all this... is there a hidden message?"
"Nothing. As I said, I just wanted to chat with you. Isabella, I have nothing left except Sebastian. If you try to compete with me, I won't hold back."
Isabella sighed, "I knew it, everything you show in front of Sebastian is just a disguise and illusion. Well, I can only say that men, they're attracted to this kind of thing."
"Sebastian and I can't be separated by you," Lynda warned, "It would be best for you to have your child, take the money, and leave quietly. I promise to be a good stepmother."
"But you still don't understand me, Lynda." Isabella stood her ground, her demeanor even stronger than Lynda's, "What I dislike the most is being warned or threatened by others."
"But you still haven't put yourself in the right place."
Isabella countered, "Is it me who hasn't put myself in the right place, or is it you? I am Mrs. Lawrence, the biological mother of Sebastian’s child."
"Lynda, who are you? Even if you are Sebastian's old flame, you're just a mistress he keeps on the side now."
"Mrs. Lawrence? What a joke! When you give birth to a child, Sebastian will divorce you, and you will be shown the door! Can you deny that?"
"That is indeed the truth," Isabella nodded, "But, besides you, besides me and Sebastian, is there another person who knows?"
"What does it matter if others know? It's still the truth!"
"So what? Are you brave enough to say it?" Isabella asked.
"Are you daring enough to go meet the Lawrence family and reveal the truth? Now, even when Sebastian comes to see you, he has to be careful and avoid unwanted attention. Do you think you're so glamorous? Embarrassing yourself in front of me?"
Lynda was so enraged by her words that she clenched her teeth.
"Don't you dare cross the line!"
"You crossed the line first. What are you flaunting in front of me? Acting so arrogantly? Yes, Sebastian loves you, I admit that. But how long do you think a man's love can last?"
"Well, it's still more than what you ever got!"
"I might not have it now, but what about the future?" Isabella asked.
"I spend every day and night with Sebastian, sharing the same bed. And what about you? You eagerly wait for him, happy for days when you can see him twice a week."
Lynda's face turned pale as she pointed at her. "You, you..."
