Chapter 189 Stay Away from Me
Isabella struggled forcefully, "Let go of me! You need to go! The farther away from me, the better!”
“What are you talking about?!" Marcus exclaimed.
"Go!" Isabella shouted, "I'm telling you to leave, Marcus, can't you understand human language!"
"How can I leave you like this?" Marcus asked, "Can I really just stand by and watch you fall into trouble?"
"The best help you can give me is to leave!"
In the struggle, Isabella's wrist turned red from his grip.
Her emotions were running high, and Marcus wouldn't let go.
"Isabella, whatever it is, you can tell me; I'll do my utmost to help you," Marcus tried to calm her, "Just calm down, calm down..."
"I can't calm down!" Isabella said, "I'm asking you to leave; can't you just listen to me for once?"
"You just said you've been set up..."
"Yes! That's why I don't want you involved! Why won't you leave?!"
Isabella's voice was almost hoarse.
Marcus looked at her steadily, he had no idea what had happened, but Isabella was so vehemently asking him to leave...
He could only comply with her wish.
"Alright," he nodded, "I won't move. You go. I'll watch you leave, okay?"
Isabella was on the verge of a breakdown.
Without another glance at Marcus, she turned and ran out of the alley.
Marcus stood still, silently watching her leave as his hands slowly clenched into fists.
He felt powerless. It was his inability to protect the woman he loved that had led to this situation!
If he had been more assertive, if he had dared to stand up against the Cooper family, if he had persisted, even going as far as to threaten them with his life, perhaps none of this would have happened.
Isabella wouldn't have knelt at the door begging for money... She wouldn't have married Sebastian, and he wouldn't have lost her...
He watched her figure running desperately forward, as if chased by some ferocious beast, quickly turning a corner and disappearing from his sight.
Marcus's clenched fist struck the wall beside him.
This was the only way he could vent his frustration.
He silently vowed that one day he would become strong, so he would never be as weak as he was today!
Just as Marcus turned to leave, footsteps sounded from the corner where Isabella had disappeared.
Marcus paused and looked up.
He saw Isabella's figure, bit by bit, reappearing in his line of sight.
Her back was to him, and her steps were slow. She was retreating slowly, and she even stumbled.
What had happened?
"Isabella?" Marcus called out, "You..."
Hearing his voice, Isabella turned her head as her eyes filled with terror, "Get away!"
What was going on?
When Isabella had completely retreated back into the alley, Marcus finally saw that in front of her were two men, one tall and one short, both wielding shiny knives.
"Watch out!"
Seeing this scene, Marcus could no longer stay put and ran up quickly.
"Oh, another one comes," the taller one said, "Looks like he's got money too."
The shorter one laughed, "Today's a good day."
Isabella turned her head to look at Marcus standing beside her and bit her lip, "Didn't I tell you to leave?! Why did you come back?! Are you stupid?! Can't you understand what I'm saying?! You're really trying to infuriate me!"
He responded, "If I just turned and ran while you were in danger, would that be something a person with a conscience could do?"
"So now, we die together, we get robbed together, and you have a conscience?"
"At least I'm with you."
Isabella said, "Marcus, I think you're an idiot!"
Marcus, however, smiled faintly, "I was just thinking, back then, if I had been with you, kneeling at the Cooper family's doorstep... things would have turned out better."
Thoughts of the past made Isabella fall silent.
"This time, I can face it with you," Marcus said, "I will do my best to protect you, Isabella."
Isabella averted her gaze. She wasn’t looking at him, but her eyes were filled with glistening tears.
In fact... Marcus had always been loving her in his own way.
It was just too late to go back.
Some things, once they happened, couldn't be undone.
Because looking back... there was no path to take.
"You're just a big fool!" Isabella said, "One person dying isn't enough, you want two?"
Marcus leaned in close to her ear, "They're after money, not lives."
Isabella could only give a bitter laugh.
These two... were no good Samaritans.
Even though this place was secluded, it was still broad daylight, and yet two men dared to rob them with knives.
It was almost certainly the handiwork of Lynda and Grace.
But Isabella didn't want to tell Marcus this.
"Run now," Isabella said, "There's still time."
"I'm not going to leave you behind."
"Alright, alright!" The shorter one waved his hand, "No one's getting away!"
Marcus stepped in front of Isabella and faced them, "Whatever you want, come at me."
"You?" The taller one sized him up, then let out a scoffing laugh, "Hand over anything valuable you've got on you."
"Okay," Marcus said, "I'll give you everything."
Saying so, he began to take out his wallet.
Taking advantage of this moment, Marcus whispered, "When I give them the stuff, you run. Isabella, just run; don't look back. You'll be safe where there are more people."
Isabella was about to look up at him, but he had already straightened up.
Marcus threw his wallet on the ground, began to slip off his ring, and finally, took off his watch from his wrist.
He weighed the watch in his hand, then suddenly threw it at the two men, and with his other hand, he pushed Isabella hard, "Run!"
Everything happened very quickly and unexpectedly.
Isabella hadn't even had time to react before she was pushed by Marcus and stumbled.
She had just steadied herself and instinctively wanted to flee, but—
"Damn it, you dare trick me!"
Curses rang out, followed by the sounds of punches and kicks.
Isabella looked back for a moment and saw Marcus pushed to the ground, curled up in a ball.
Seeing this scene, her feet felt as if they were filled with lead.
"Go, catch that woman," the shorter one said, "Don't let her get away! If she brings people back, we're done for!"
Hearing this, Isabella got a jolt and took off running.
If both of them were caught, they would both be in danger. If one escaped, she could find help and still save Marcus!
But it was too late.
Her hesitation meant she missed her best chance to escape.
Isabella was quickly caught and brought back. She then received a slap that knocked her off her feet, causing her to fall to the ground.
The taller one grabbed her, dragged her back, and pulled her into a corner.
