Chapter 444 Ronald Called
The echo of his words pounded in Lynda's ears.
She hadn't seen him at all!
Lynda stood on the stage, her smile frozen like a deer in headlights.
Her smile was so awkward now.
"Miss Baker, can you get a hold of your fiancé?" Edward asked Lynda, looking super stressed, "Is something up? Why isn't he here? Is he bailing?"
Lynda didn't know if Edward was doing it on purpose, but he asked her through the microphone.
Edward not only spoke into the mic but did it so bluntly! This was clearly a private question that should've been whispered in her ear.
Now everyone in the audience heard it, and it spread like wildfire.
Immediately, Lynda saw people start whispering to each other.
"What's going on? Is she getting ditched?"
"Obviously, he's been called a million times and still hasn't shown."
"Wasn't the woman on stage supposed to be Mr. Lawrence's favorite?"
"What are you talking about? Didn't you see Mr. Lawrence standing in the back? The one next to him is Mrs. Lawrence. Look at the way he looks at her."
"Don't talk nonsense, there's no third party between them. Maybe it's that Miss Baker on stage, making things up."
"Could be, trying to be charming, and then she hooked up with Samuel, right?"
"Looks like Samuel saw through it and bailed."
Lynda's ears buzzed, chaotic, and cold sweat dripped down her forehead, her face pale.
She thought, 'What nonsense are these people talking about!
'How could Samuel run away!
'Samuel loves me so much!
'Over the years, I have always acted according to Samuel's preferences, making him extremely satisfied.
'Something must have happened to Samuel!'
Lynda didn't believe for a second that Samuel would leave her here alone to be ridiculed by so many people.
He wouldn't be so cruel to her.
He had always cherished her, even going so far as to oppose Sebastian, secretly manipulating and using significant influence to get Grace out.
Then she thought, 'If this isn't love, what is?'
Lynda slowly calmed down.
She didn't love Samuel, didn't think much of Samuel's flattery, but there was no doubt that Samuel loved her!
Lynda's rapidly beating heart gradually steadied, and she smiled and said, "Sorry, my fiancé is on his way, please wait a moment."
Because she was wearing a gown and couldn't carry her phone, Lynda had given her phone to a waiter for safekeeping.
She couldn't call Samuel now, so she had to soothe the guests' nerves.
She firmly believed that Samuel would arrive soon!
With this psychological suggestion, Lynda's unease instantly disappeared.
However, many guests didn't buy it. Their gazes had long changed, with admiration and jealousy replaced by disdain and ridicule.
Their eyes told Lynda they were enjoying the show.
Lynda's face burned, wishing she could find a place to hide.
Lynda gritted her teeth, cursing Samuel with the most venomous words in her heart, 'What could have delayed Samuel so much that he still hasn't shown up! Even if something happened, could it be more important than the engagement?'
"Miss Baker, should we just call off the engagement for today?" Edward put down the mic and quietly asked her.
Lynda's eyes widened. Cancel? No way!
Canceling the engagement would mean Samuel had bailed on the party.
She thought, 'No way, Samuel couldn't have run away, he's just late! I can wait, definitely!
'I will never cancel; if I do, I will become the laughingstock of the entire Maple Valley!
'Edward is clearly up to no good!'
Lynda shot Edward a venomous glare. "I said, my fiancé is on his way, didn't you get that? He'll be here any minute!"
Realizing her expression was a bit too intense, Lynda forced a stiff smile.
She struggled to smile at Edward and repeated, "He'll be here soon, very soon."
Even though Lynda was smiling, her forced grin made Edward take a step back.
"Yes, I understand," Edward nervously followed the pre-arranged script and said, "Miss Baker, would you like to contact your fiancé?"
Of course, Lynda wanted to contact him, but her phone wasn't with her.
With so many people watching her, if she went to get her phone, wouldn't it look like she was avoiding the situation? Ending the engagement?
If she left, many guests would surely leave.
The departing guests wouldn't see Samuel proposing to her, but instead, would spread unfavorable rumors about her.
That wouldn't do; everyone present had to witness Samuel proposing to her.
Not a single person could be missing!
Lynda was even more determined; she had to stand here and wait, without any hint of fear.
Only if she firmly believed that Samuel would come, would others believe it too.
Lynda didn't respond to Edward. She clasped her hands in front of her, looking dignified, her eyes fixed on the door.
She smiled, a shy and happy smile.
Lynda looked very confident like this.
Someone looked at her and started whispering, "Mr. Carter is probably just delayed on the way and will be here soon."
"Indeed, at an engagement party, if the groom really wasn't coming, the bride would have gone crazy, not stayed so calm."
Public opinion always shifted, constantly changing.
Lynda now was very satisfied, and she shyly met the gazes of those watching her.
"Your fiancé's assistant is calling me, Miss Baker." Suddenly, Edward's voice rang out without warning.
Almost everyone's eyes fell on Edward.
Edward spoke loudly and abruptly, startling Lynda.
Her heart stopped for a few seconds.
When Lynda recovered from the shock, she heard Edward next to her say, "Yes, Miss Baker is right next to me, Ronald, do you have any instructions?"
It turned out Edward had answered the phone.
Lynda quickly looked over, thinking, 'Ronald? Samuel's assistant Ronald? Why is he calling?'
She hadn't waited for Samuel to come, but instead got a call from Ronald?
