Chapter 315 You Were Pretending to Seize Power
Isabella didn't understand what Jarod meant and raised an eyebrow, asking, "Hurt each other? What do you mean, Jarod? It seems... I'm the only one bearing this pain."
"Sebastian likes you." Jarod tapped the table lightly. "It's absolutely true. When you like each other, naturally, you hurt each other."
Isabella was stunned for a few seconds, then burst into laughter as if she had heard a great joke. "Jarod, you're quite funny when you joke around."
"Don't you believe it?" Jarod's lips curved slightly. "I set up a trap a few days ago. You should remember. I had Peter take you to the old mansion and staged a fake kidnapping."
Upon hearing Jarod's words, Isabella became serious, putting aside her thoughts of leaving and sitting up straight.
"Yes," Isabella admitted, "I remember that. But what does that have to do with Sebastian's feelings for me?"
"At that time, Lynda seemed unwell and also sought him out. But he chose you over her, and that was a turning point in his feelings. It was the beginning of him realizing... who truly had a place in his heart."
Jarod's voice was husky, devoid of personal emotions, without any affection, simply stating.
However, even so, Isabella was completely shocked. Her pupils contracted in disbelief.
Sebastian actually chose her over Lynda?
As Jarod was speaking, she nervously picked up the half-empty glass of milk.
After Jarod finished, she brought the lukewarm milk to her lips, the cool liquid touching her teeth.
The slight chill brought her back to reality.
How could that be?
Isabella put down the cup.
She shook her head. "Jarod, you're just joking."
Isabella gripped the water cup tightly, causing her fingertips to turn white from the pressure.
Jarod said softly, "You lost because you didn't trust him enough. Of course, he also failed to give you the sense of security you needed."
Isabella's mind buzzed, a thousand thoughts pulling her in different directions. Her heart beat wildly, surpassing what her body could bear.
She paled, refusing to admit, "Jarod, I don't understand why you're telling me all this suddenly. I don't think I have anything to offer, so don't bother."
"No, you do have the value I need." Jarod denied her words.
Isabella scoffed, and after a while, her tense face relaxed a bit. "So, you have a purpose. Your words alone are not convincing enough."
Jarod shook his head. "My purpose is simple. I want you to give birth to the child safely, and I hope that you and Sebastian can be together in the end."
Isabella was momentarily taken aback. She blinked her eyes in confusion. "Why? Logically, you shouldn't want Sebastian's life to be smooth. That way, you can take over the company."
This plot didn't make sense!
Sebastian and Jarod were at odds, but why did Jarod's words sound different?
Isabella thought Jarod was pretending, but his eyes were calm and without fluctuations, like those of an elderly person in his twilight years, devoid of vitality.
Was Jarod, who seemed to have no pursuit of life or power, really still caring?
Isabella suddenly became very confused.
Jarod didn't intend to hide it from Isabella and moved his mouth to say, "Because of my busy work, I lost my beloved. Do you think I can just go back to the company like nothing had happened?"
"You and sister-in-law..." Jarod's sorrow influenced Isabella, and she spoke without thinking. After the words left her mouth, she felt it was inappropriate and quickly apologized, "I'm sorry."
One should respect the deceased.
Jarod remained nonchalant, "It's okay. She's gone. You can say what you want."
Isabella vaguely remembered the few words Sebastian had mentioned, saying that Jarod had injured his leg while trying to save his loved one, but unfortunately, he failed.
For a moment, the air seemed to freeze, and Isabella didn't know what to say.
"The dead cannot be brought back to life. Those who are still alive should continue to look forward," Isabella said, trying to break the deadlock.
But it only added to the tension as Jarod's expression grew noticeably rigid.
Damn, what was she blabbering about?
Isabella felt annoyed with herself, but she plowed ahead, changing her words, "Sister-in-law... she must have been an exceptional person."
Jarod naturally felt pleased when she praised his wife.
He showed a genuine smile and said, "Yes, she was wonderful, the best person in the world."
But Isabella felt even more embarrassed by the situation. He took her compliment seriously.
Why was Jarod talking to her about his love life? How should she respond?
No, wait...
Isabella furrowed her brow as a realization dawned on her. Although it sounded unbelievable, she still voiced it.
"Jarod, you just said you won't return to the company, so why do many people believe that you want to seize power? Are you... pretending?"
Once she caught on to this point and followed the reasoning, everything slowly became clear.
Isabella's mind raced.......
"You don't want to join the company, but as the eldest son of the Lawrence family, your status requires you to. So you deliberately cause trouble, making Sebastian think that you have ulterior motives, and he watched you closely, leaving you with no way out."
Jarod's smile had vanished.
Facing Isabella's words, he didn't deny it and simply raised his chin. "Go ahead."
Isabella was almost stunned by this revelation and stared at him in disbelief. "So, Jarod, you... you also don't plan to get married and have children. Perhaps you want to leave Maple Valley, leave the Lawrence family, and be with... sister-in-law."
This almost terrified Isabella. His love for his wife was profound!
A man in power, at the top of the pyramid, was willing to give up everything.
All for a woman, a woman who was already dead.
Profound, yet also tragic.
Isabella let out a sigh and continued, "If you've been struggling for so long, maybe it's because sister-in-law didn't want you to make any rash decisions."
"You have to obey, so you value the child in my womb. Once the Lawrence family has a next-generation heir, no one will force you to marry and have children. You can continue to immerse yourself in your world."
Jarod tapped the table twice, his words shrouded in mystery, "Little sister, you are indeed clever. Sebastian's judgment is indeed very accurate."
Jarod's emotions dumbfounded Isabella, and she didn't probe further into his words.
