Chapter 380 Saying You Believe, But Demanding Evidence
Isabella said solemnly, "Amber, I promise you'll be the third to know!"
Amber raised an eyebrow. "Who's the second?"
"Sebastian, obviously," Isabella replied with a wink.
Amber looked confused for a second, then broke into a sweet smile. "I believe you!" They laughed, feeling closer than ever.
Meanwhile, Sebastian pulled up at the edge of Maple Valley. As he stepped out, Kaine approached him. "Mr. Lawrence."
Sebastian cut to the chase, "Where's the hit-and-run driver?"
Kaine had texted him about finding the driver, so Sebastian rushed over.
Kaine looked a bit guilty as he led Sebastian to an abandoned car. "This is the vehicle."
Sebastian frowned. "Where's the driver?"
"Gone. No fingerprints either."
Sebastian placed a hand on the car's hood and smirked faintly. "It's been almost twenty-four hours since the incident."
"Mr. Lawrence, I'll take the blame," Kaine said, looking defeated.
Sebastian stayed silent, his eyes fixed on the driver's seat. He noticed two long strands of hair with white root.
The hair was rough, naturally curly, and reddish, clearly neglected for a long time.
Kaine, knowing Sebastian well, followed his gaze and understood. He put on gloves, collected the hair, and found a few more strands under the passenger seat. He handed them to a subordinate to bag.
"Mr. Lawrence, it was my mistake. I'll take these to the lab for DNA testing," Kaine said.
Sebastian lit a cigarette, the smoke curling around his face. Through the haze, he said, "Kaine, once this is over, take your punishment."
Kaine knew he had let Sebastian down and didn't argue.
Sebastian said nothing more and drove off. On his way back to the hospital, he detoured to the office to pick up some contracts and documents.
As he was about to leave the garage, his phone rang. It was Kaine.
Kaine's voice was shaky, tinged with panic. "Mr. Lawrence, the hair belongs to Miss Turner."
Sebastian's eyes narrowed, a cold gleam flickering in them. He gripped the steering wheel tightly, veins bulging.
"But," Kaine continued, "I checked with the prison. Grace swallowed glass and was admitted to the hospital half a month ago. She's deceased."
"Deceased?" Sebastian doubted. How could such significant news have no rumors?
Kaine anticipated his confusion. "Because she was the former mayor's daughter, it was hushed up. Handled quietly."
Sebastian's face remained emotionless. "They faked her death. Go on."
Kaine paused. "Yes, you're right. The higher-ups in the police department revealed that a close friend of the former mayor orchestrated Grace's incident. This friend has influence in Embercrest Heights, but we haven't confirmed further details yet."
"Embercrest Heights?" Sebastian repeated.
"Yes," Kaine confirmed.
Sebastian sneered. Grace, Embercrest Heights, Silvercrest, Samuel, and Lynda... The connections were all too clear.
Sebastian let out a cold, disappointed laugh. "First, dig into Samuel and Lynda. I've told you before, Kaine. You're moving too slow. Second, find Grace within a day. Find her, and your wedding cost with Emily is on me."
Kaine's tense nerves relaxed a bit. He wanted to tell Sebastian that he and Emily hadn't defined their relationship yet. After a moment of thought, he kept quiet, knowing there would be a time for that discussion.
"Understood!" Kaine's passion was reignited.
Sebastian hung up and lingered in the underground garage for a moment. He replayed yesterday's footage from Serenity Way.
In the footage, Lynda anxiously helped Isabella up, taking a few steps with her before Isabella pushed her away.
Then, Isabella staggered forward and fell to the ground.
Sebastian had watched it in the morning when Isabella was still asleep. He believed that Isabella's fall was caused by her pushing Lynda away too forcefully. Isabella thought Lynda had pushed her because of their longstanding animosity, mistaking her misstep for a shove from Lynda.
Sebastian repeatedly rewound the video, scrutinizing that moment over and over.
No, he was wrong!
Isabella had indeed been pushed down. In the video, Lynda's elbow made an tiny, almost imperceptible forward motion.
It was hidden too well, almost invisible. Yet, the evidence was right there, undeniable.
The cramped car was filled with the pungent smell of cigarettes. Sebastian's chest was tight with pain. Due to Joshua's illness and Isabella's pregnancy, he hadn't smoked in a long time. As he had too much smoking today, his body couldn't handle it.
Sebastian squeezed his phone tightly, not wanting to admit that this pain was because, deep down, he hadn't truly believed Isabella's words.
He said he believed her, but he needed evidence. What kind of belief was that?
What was he doubting? Was he doubting that Isabella lied to him?
Sebastian was certain that if the person who pushed Isabella, nearly killing her, were just some random stranger, they'd be gone by now. It woudln't matter if Isabella had pointed the finger or not, good intentions or bad, they'd be erased from this world.
Last night, he had refused to answer that question, avoiding thinking about it. Now, the answer was crystal clear.
The video from Serenity Way was still playing on his phone, silent yet solid.
Sebastian watched Isabella's panicked posture as she was pushed down for the first time, clutching her abdomen.
Then, he saw Isabella pushed down a second time, kneeling on the ground with blood pooling beneath her, and he took a sharp breath, feeling a sharp pain in his chest, which was so intense it numbed him, making it hard to breathe.
After a moment of silence, Sebastian drove out of the garage. Not long after, the car stopped at Pine Ridge Gardens.
With a straight face, Sebastian strode into the house.
Pamela, who was taking out the trash, saw him, and her face lit up with a hint of joy as she approached. "Mr. Lawrence, you're here? Perfect timing. Miss Baker just got back."
Sebastian pushed past Pamela in silence.
The smile on Pamela's face gradually faded, a sense of foreboding creeping into her heart.
Lynda had stayed at Samuel's place overnight. Originally, Samuel was supposed to accompany her back to pack her things, but someone called him away, so she returned on her own.
