Chapter 451 The Engagement Is Still On?
"Isabella?" Samuel called out, his voice shaky, head hanging low. No answer.
Rain was pouring down his face, dripping off his chin like a leaky faucet.
He didn't have time to worry about that. He hustled to the car, yanked open the door, and gently laid her in the back seat.
Once Isabella was settled, Samuel straightened up, took a deep breath, and slid into the driver's seat.
He grabbed a tissue, wiped his face, and let out a long sigh.
Turning to look at the back seat, he saw the Isabella he first met in Silvercrest. Her smile used to be as bright as the morning sun, but now her face was pale, eyes shut, and she looked lifeless.
She looked even worse than when he saw her at the sanatorium or the tea shop recently.
It was gut-wrenching.
Suddenly, sirens blared, cutting through the rain, and stopped right in front of the hotel.
Cops in navy blue uniforms jumped out and rushed into the lobby.
Samuel wasn't surprised; he was the one who called them. He let out a bitter laugh.
After a quick glance, he turned his focus back to Isabella.
He stared at her face, and even though he knew she wouldn't answer, he muttered, "What happened to you? You should've been so happy tonight. Why are you in so much pain? Isn't Sebastian with you? Or do you not know what went down in the last twenty minutes?"
The car's soundproofing was top-notch, blocking out the rain completely.
The silence was deafening.
With a head full of questions, Samuel straightened up and drove off.
He knew he should call Sebastian, Isabella's husband.
But that thought was gone as quickly as it came. He shoved it down, pretending it never crossed his mind.
Isabella was out cold, lost in a dark, sunless dream. She felt cold and scared.
Samuel's last words echoed in her ears. "Or do you not know what went down in the last twenty minutes?"
What had happened twenty minutes ago?
Besides Marcus spilling the beans about that rainy night, what else went down?
Isabella had no clue.
Twenty minutes ago, in the hotel lobby.
Sebastian watched Isabella leave, and only when she was out of sight did he reluctantly look away.
On stage, Lynda's eyes locked onto his.
Sebastian sensed the hatred in Lynda's eyes, but the distance made it hard to be sure.
If he didn't know she once tried to kill Isabella, he might've thought he was imagining things.
But now, he was sure it wasn't just in his head.
Lynda still hated Isabella.
Sebastian realized it was his constant indulgence that led Lynda to do such horrible things to Isabella.
His eyes narrowed, his gaze sharp. He closed his eyes for a moment, and when he opened them, they were filled with determination.
Then, he raised his eyes and nodded at Kaine, who was hidden in the crowd.
Catching Sebastian's signal, Kaine slipped out his phone and quietly ducked out.
Lynda, oblivious to Sebastian's sharp eyes, didn't even notice he was watching her.
Ever since she saw Isabella's mocking smile, she couldn't tear her eyes away. The chatter around her faded, and all she could see was Isabella's grace and charm.
Even after Isabella left, Lynda kept glaring, ignoring Sebastian right next to her.
She started hallucinating, seeing Isabella's face, smirking and making all sorts of expressions to taunt her.
'Bitch!' she thought.
Her eyes turned red, teeth grinding so hard you could hear it. She was losing it.
She was gonna lose her dignity today, so no way was Isabella getting off easy. She wanted Isabella to share in the humiliation!
Just as Lynda took a step forward, someone grabbed her arm.
She whipped around, face twisted, glaring at the person who stopped her, hissing, "Let go! What the hell are you doing?"
The person holding her back was the woman who'd been fussing with her dress.
She smiled and said, "Miss Baker, Mr. Lawrence asked me to tell you the engagement is still on. Please don't run off; your fiancé will be here soon."
Despite everything that had happened today, Lynda's eyes lit up with pure joy and excitement at those words.
The fierce look on her face melted into happiness and relief.
She became all gentle and serene again, tears welling up as she locked eyes with Sebastian.
Through her tear-blurred vision, she could just make out Sebastian's cold face.
But Lynda thought, 'Sebastian isn't really cold; he must have some pity for me.
'Why else would he step in today?
'The engagement is still on, so he must have secretly forced Samuel to come, right?'
She knew it; Sebastian wouldn't abandon her.
Lynda's love for him overflowed.
Her heart pounded for him.
The thought of not wanting to be engaged to Samuel grew even stronger. No one could treat her as well as Sebastian did. She wanted to win Sebastian back and beat Isabella to become Mrs. Lawrence!
How could she ruin this engagement?
She thought, 'Got it!'
When Samuel showed up, she'd cancel the engagement on the spot. The humiliation Samuel caused her, she'd throw right back at him!
Then, she'd openly go after Sebastian. Didn't his help today prove she mattered to him?
Even though she almost killed Isabella, Sebastian still let her off. Didn't that show how important she was?
It must've been because she wasn't sincere enough before that Sebastian stayed with Isabella, right?
From now on, she'd be sincere to him, and he'd surely come back!
Lynda's heart started pounding again. She no longer felt humiliated; instead, a genuine smile of happiness spread across her face.
Reluctantly, she tore her gaze from Sebastian and, just to be sure, asked the woman beside her again, "The engagement is still on? Really?"
