Chapter 348 Happy Wedding
Joshua dared not move or respond; any action on his part could expose his physical condition.
Without waiting for Joshua's response, Brittany sadly shook her head, a bitter smile on her face. "Forget it, you don't have to answer. Love is love. There's no logic to it."
She lifted her head, wiping away the tears on her face.
Brittany sniffed, removing the hair tie from her head, letting her alluring curly hair cascade over her shoulders.
She took a step closer, a bittersweet ache in her chest. "May your life be everything ours could have been," she whispered, her voice laced with unspoken emotions. "Congratulations, Joshua. Be happy."
"Goodbye."
And with that, she bid farewell to him.
Joshua remained silent, standing in place, closing his eyes in pain.
He felt a self-inflicted agony, watching Brittany leave, her figure fading until it disappeared.
He coughed, bending over, a metallic taste rising in his throat soon after.
Joshua's body felt unsteady. Reaching into his pocket, He pulled out the bookmark, on which was a beautifully exquisite drawing that captured the essence of their love.
Brittany loved Joshua, and Joshua loved Brittany.
At that moment, a gentle and affectionate song played over the campus radio at Maple Valley University.
Joshua carefully caressed the bookmark with his fingertips, as if it were a precious treasure.
He touched the bookmark's textured paper, and gradually, the chill in his hands dissipated, even his body felt relief from the pain, except for his heart.
But it was precisely because of the heartache that he felt alive, still living on.
Joshua turned his head, looking back at the Maple Valley University campus, where every corner held traces of him and Brittany.
He seemed to see their first meeting, every significant holiday they spent together, her leaning on his arm with a light smile at graduation.
He saw their springs, summers, autumns, and winters.
Joshua couldn't bear to look anymore, but even as he turned away, those memories continued to replay in his mind.
He walked slowly towards the parking lot, each step particularly difficult.
Finally sitting in the driver's seat, Joshua seemed to have shed a layer of strength, tiredly resting in the car seat.
He closed his eyes, unmoving. If not for the occasional rise and fall of his chest, he could have been mistaken for a corpse.
But how far had he reached?
His plan was only halfway through, yet to be finished.
After a while, Joshua took out a bottle of pills, popped one in his mouth, and then made a call, coldly saying, "Be at Maple Valley One within half an hour."
It was a simple command: no pleasantries, no warmth.
After speaking, Joshua hung up.
Sometime later, a luxurious car pulled out from the parking spot.
On the bus, Brittany stared blankly out the window, her face expressionless.
Brittany had convinced herself she'd moved on, that Joshua's betrayal was a distant memory, leaving only the bitter aftertaste of hatred.
But today, she realized she was wrong.
The cold air from the air conditioner blew on her face, chilling her cheeks. Brittany wiped her face, feeling the dampness on her fingertips.
She clenched her hand, pushing it behind her back, pretending nothing had happened.
Yet, when she withdrew her hand, her gaze fell directly on her shoes.
The image of Joshua bending down to change her shoes was still fresh in her mind, his distinct scent seeming to waft into her nostrils at that moment.
It was cool and refreshing, with a hint of a hospital disinfectant smell, but not exactly the same, laced with other scents..
Faint and elusive, the scent seemed deliberately crafted, indiscernible to Brittany.
She bit her lower lip, the previous bite wound reopening inside, sending a sharp pang of pain.
But Brittany paid it no mind.
The more it hurt, the better.
The more it hurt, the clearer her mind was.
The more it hurt, the more she could hold onto her dignity.
After over forty minutes, the bus finally stopped, and Brittany got off. Night had fallen, the sky dark, with bright neon lights illuminating the streets.
Brittany stepped inside at the entrance of Maple Valley One.
She had planned to pack her things two days later. Unexpectedly, Joshua had moved up the engagement date and prematurely ended their relationship, leaving her belongings still unattended in his house.
If it had just been regular clothes, it would have been fine, but there were work materials, some encrypted files, and materials she needed for the next day. Brittany had no choice but to make another trip.
"Brittany!" A tense voice, accompanied by hurried footsteps, suddenly reached her ears.
Larry?
She seemed to hear Larry's voice. Was it an illusion?
Had Joshua let him go?
It seemed Joshua was true to his words. She spent today with him and made him happy, so he let Larry go.
This was typical Joshua; whatever he wanted to do, he could make it happen in an instant.
Brittany was momentarily stunned. When she regained her senses, she quickly followed the source of the voice to find Larry.
Before she could catch sight of Larry, Brittany was suddenly embraced tightly, a wave of unfamiliar warmth washing over her.
Brittany felt uncomfortable, raising her eyebrows.
She called out in suspicion, "Larry?"
Larry held Brittany tightly, feeling her warmth. Only then did the anxiety in his heart subside.
Releasing Brittany, he grasped her arm, bending down, his deep blue eyes locking onto hers. "Why didn't you answer the phone?"
Larry was usually gentle, especially towards Brittany, but now his tone was filled with reproach. "You scared me. Do you know that?"
Surprised, Brittany looked at Larry. Seeing him, she finally let go of the tension that had been hanging over her.
But as she looked at Larry's weary face and disheveled clothes, a sense of guilt began to torment her.
Larry was always warm and composed, with a penchant for personal hygiene. Yet because of her, he had been unjustly locked up in the police station for so long.
As a doctor, Larry always cared about his image, with a touch of OCD. But because of her, he was still wearing the same clothes as the ones from the airport.
How could she repay this gratitude?
Brittany felt heavy-hearted.
"Brittany? Brittany?" Larry called out.
"Larry, I'm fine. My phone broke, so I didn't get your call. I'll get a new phone tomorrow." Brittany quickly brushed over the topic, tilting her head and furrowing her brows. "How have you been lately?"
