Chapter 117 It Was Just Hype
Chloe was quick on her feet. She handed over the money in no time, and the deceased's family, satisfied, carried the body away from the entrance of Everjoy Clinic.
Larry also acted quickly. With his top-notch medical skills and sharp debating ability, he managed to convince the troublemakers to back off.
"Alright, show's over. Everyone, disperse," Larry said, standing up and addressing the onlookers.
Everjoy Clinic was one of the big names on Medical Street, and the incident had drawn a lot of attention. Many doctors from the street had come to watch the commotion, along with a bunch of curious bystanders.
"Hold on," a voice called out.
Larry turned to see a doctor in his fifties, dressed in white, named Nicholas Collins, approaching.
Larry frowned. "What's the matter?"
Nicholas stepped forward, glaring at Larry. "This is Medical Street, where clinics build their reputations on real skills, not cheap stunts. Everjoy Clinic is just hyping this time. If everyone starts doing this, it'll be chaos."
Larry squinted at Nicholas. "Are you saying we staged this?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Nicholas snapped. "This was all planned by you, right? First, you tarnished Everjoy Clinic's reputation, then you swooped in to save the day, making your skills look superior. Shame on you."
Nicholas spat on the ground. "Diagnosing what someone ate days ago? Do you think we're all fools?"
The crowd was stunned.
"So it really was a setup by Everjoy Clinic."
"I knew it. No way there's such a miraculous doctor."
"Shameless. Using such dirty tricks just to make money."
Many bystanders started criticizing Everjoy Clinic.
"Stop talking nonsense," Maria couldn't take it anymore. She stepped forward, shouting, "Larry is truly skilled."
She pulled Chloe over. "This is my daughter Chloe. She used to be the ugliest woman in Sunset City, and it was Larry who treated her. Look at her skin now, smooth as silk. We don't need to stage anything."
The crowd murmured in agreement. Everyone knew what Chloe used to look like, and the change was too drastic to ignore.
Larry stepped forward and smiled. "Nicholas, you're smart. Yes, we staged this to make Everjoy Clinic famous. I didn't expect you to see through it. You're the real miraculous doctor. I truly admire you."
"Larry, what are you doing?" Maria scolded.
Harry also stepped forward, shouting, "We didn't stage anything."
Larry glared at them and whispered, "If we didn't stage it, are you admitting there's a problem with our medicine?"
Maria immediately shut her mouth. Harry also fell silent.
"Sorry for the spectacle. Nicholas's criticism is spot on. Our methods were too despicable. From now on, Everjoy Clinic will close for rectification. Please, media reporters, bear witness. We will compete fairly in the future. Alright, everyone, disperse," Larry said with a smile, waving everyone off.
Then he pulled Chloe and the others into Everjoy Clinic.
"So it was a stunt."
"I thought Everjoy Clinic had a medical accident or their medicine had issues."
"I even thought Sunset City had a young miraculous doctor."
"Such a despicable method."
The crowd gradually dispersed, disdainful of what had happened at Everjoy Clinic.
Inside the lobby of the clinic, Harry scolded, "Larry, what are you doing? This was a great opportunity to promote Everjoy Clinic, and you completely ruined it. This isn't a stunt."
Larry sat down and lit a cigarette.
Victor asked, "Larry, what's going on? Did you really arrange this as a publicity stunt?"
"Publicity stunt?" Larry's face darkened. "I'm not that idle. So many people having issues, is that a stunt? If we don't call it a stunt, are we saying there's a problem with Everjoy Clinic's medicine? If we don't admit it's a stunt and the media digs deeper, do you know how much impact that would have on the clinic?"
Oscar stepped forward. "So you're saying Everjoy Clinic's medicine has issues?"
Larry nodded. "That's probably the case."
Oscar's tone turned icy. "Even if the medicine has issues, you can't blame anyone. Chloe is the chairwoman of Everjoy Clinic, and everything here is decided by her. I heard the clinic recently changed its supplier for medicinal herbs."
Larry looked at Chloe. She nodded. "That's true. Previously, our suppliers were small companies. As we deepened our cooperation with Legion Lord, I canceled contracts with some companies and started sourcing from Legion Lord. They're a large corporation; their medicine has no issues."
Julia sneered. "You know very well whether there are issues or not. The profit margin on medicinal supplies is huge. Who knows if you secretly took kickbacks and got a batch of fake medicine at a low price?"
"Exactly," Oscar said loudly, looking at Victor. "Victor, we must thoroughly investigate this. Everjoy Clinic never had issues before, but now that Chloe is chairwoman, such a big problem has arisen in just a few days. I also heard that Sam bought a car worth over fifty thousand dollars. It's not even the end of the month, and there hasn't been any dividend payout. Their family shouldn't have afforded such an expensive car."
Julia nodded. "The kickbacks must be huge. It's only been a few days, and they've probably taken at least tens of thousands from the company, enough to buy a car worth over fifty thousand dollars."
Sam angrily shouted, "That's bullshit! I bought that car a long time ago. It's our family's own money."
Maria was also displeased. "You two stop talking nonsense. Chloe didn't take any kickbacks."
Victor looked at Chloe. "Chloe, take a seat here. It's inevitable to take some kickbacks, but you must wholeheartedly work for the family. Using inferior medicine tarnishes Everjoy Clinic's reputation and could lead to big problems."
"Grandpa, I didn't," Chloe said, feeling wronged.
Chloe had been working tirelessly for the family, running around to various pharmaceutical groups like Legion Lord for the family business. She hadn't taken any money from the company. It was impossible for her to take kickbacks.
Oscar cursed again, "Chloe, Larry, you two bastards, I get it now. You got inferior medicine at a low price and then colluded with outsiders to scam the family's money. The two million dollars given out today, you must have pocketed at least one million and ninety thousand, right?"
Maria scolded, "Bullshit."
Sam also shouted, "Oscar, don't slander us. Do you have any evidence of colluding with outsiders?"
Oscar looked at Victor. "Grandpa, please investigate this thoroughly. If it turns out Chloe and her family are causing trouble, I don't think she should remain as chairwoman, or the family will definitely face problems."
"Grandpa, I really didn't," Chloe said, her eyes welling up with tears.
Victor smoked his cigarette. It was usual for a chairperson to take kickbacks. When Harry was chairperson, he took quite a bit, but Victor turned a blind eye. As long as the family was being led in a good direction, taking some benefits in secret wasn't a big deal. But Chloe had gone too far this time.
Victor waved his hand slightly. "We haven't figured out the details yet. Harry, investigate the medicine issue and give me an answer as soon as possible."
"Yes, Dad," Harry nodded.
Victor looked at Chloe. "Chloe, I've seen your efforts these past few days. The group's reforms, the deepened cooperation with Legion Lord and the Everlife Group, and the business expansion are all beneficial to the family. But this fake medicine issue, I hope it wasn't you. If it turns out you're involved..."
Victor didn't finish his sentence, then picked up his cane and walked away.
