Chapter 254 Larry's Bait

Matthew had to bite the bullet.

He had to pull out all the stops to dig up dirt on Nikolai and get it to Larry before sundown.

After the call, Larry sped over to Mortal Clinic. Lyra now had a legit identity, posing as Larry's cousin.

Lyra was chilling on a chair, her chin propped up on her hands, staring blankly at the door. When Larry rolled in, she jumped up, a big grin lighting up her pretty face, and chirped, "Larry!"

In that moment, she looked like a sweet little girl, not a stone-cold killer.

Larry plopped down next to her and asked, "How's the injury?"

Lyra grinned and said, "This little scratch? It's nothing. I'm bouncing back quick. Give me a few days, and I'll be good as new."

Larry nodded, "Heal up fast. Things are getting messy, and I'm worried the bad guys might go after my wife. I need you to keep an eye on Chloe, undercover."

Larry knew that even after he quit and came back to Sunset City, someone was scheming in the shadows.

Right now, the only ones gunning for the Lewis Family were the Business Growth Collective and the Harmony Alliance Circle. The real heavy hitters hadn't stepped in yet.

He had to get ready to keep Chloe safe.

Even though Lyra was tough, she was just one of the top three assassins from the Shadow Syndicate. If the Syndicate sent more pros, even Lyra might not be enough to protect Chloe.

He needed more muscle. But he couldn't just call in the Black Dragon Army to guard Chloe.

"Lyra, have you been in touch with any other assassins from the Shadow Syndicate?"

Lyra looked at Larry and asked, "Larry, what are you getting at? You think I'm still tight with the Syndicate? How could I reach out to other assassins after I bailed on them?"

Larry waved it off, "I just want to hire more assassins to help me out."

Lyra let out a sigh of relief.

"I don't even know who the other assassins are. They could be anyone."

Lyra took a deep breath, hinting that the Shadow Syndicate was a tangled web.

"There are two kinds of assassins in the Shadow Syndicate."

Larry perked up, "Keep talking."

Lyra said, "One kind is the homegrown assassins. The Syndicate scours the globe for orphans, trains them to kill from a young age, and makes them fight each other. The survivors are hardcore."

"The other kind is freelancers."

"These assassins are ghosts. They only pop up when needed. The Syndicate takes the job, assigns it, and skims 20% off the top."

Larry nodded slightly and asked, "Which kind are you?"

"I'm the first kind."

Lyra's face darkened, "As far back as I can remember, I've been surrounded by blood. I was caged as a kid, fighting off vicious dogs and wild wolves."

Lyra spilled her tragic backstory.

She'd wanted out of the Syndicate for ages but didn't have the guts. She knew how powerful they were. For an assassin, retirement meant death.

Larry thought for a moment. Then he said, "Now that the Syndicate's hunting you, will their people show up if you make an appearance?"

Lyra glanced at Larry and asked, "Larry, are you planning to use me as bait?"

"Yep." Larry nodded.

"I need more pros right now. Since they're after you, the ones who come will be top-tier assassins. Once they show up, I'll make sure they don't leave."

Lyra nodded right away, "Just tell me what you need."

Larry waved it off, "I'm just giving you a heads-up about this risky job. For now, focus on getting better. Once you're healed up and Frank's out of the hospital, we'll hash out the details."

"Got it."

Lyra nodded again.

After chatting with Lyra, Larry took off. He hadn't even grabbed breakfast yet.

He drove downtown and found a busy little restaurant to grab a bite.

The place was packed, almost every table taken. Larry snagged the only empty one, ordered breakfast, and waited.

Just then, a woman in a tight black dress, long brown hair, and sunglasses strolled in.

She walked straight to Larry's table, gave him a faint smile, and sat down across from him. She turned to the waiter and said, "I'll have your best meal."

Larry didn't even look up, too busy playing a game on his phone.

Esmeralda Vale, after ordering, looked around curiously. Her eyes landed on Larry. Seeing how into his game he was, she asked, "What game you playing?"

Larry glanced up briefly, sizing her up.

Even sitting, he could tell she was about five feet tall with a killer figure. The dress hugged her curves, and her chest was, well, noticeable.

She had big sunglasses covering half her face, but her skin looked smooth, and her features were delicate.

Larry just gave her a quick look and went back to his game.

Esmeralda took off her sunglasses, revealing her delicate face and clear eyes. She blinked her big, lively eyes, "What's so fun about that game? Look at me. Am I pretty?"

She was clearly confident in her looks.

Just then, the waiter brought Larry's breakfast, "Sir, your breakfast. Please enjoy!"

Larry started eating without even glancing at her.

Esmeralda was baffled. She was used to being the center of attention, especially up North.

Now, in Sunset City, she was being ignored. She reached out and grabbed Larry's breakfast.

"Are you nuts?" Larry looked up, annoyed, "If you're crazy, go to the hospital."

He took his breakfast back.

At that moment, a group of people stormed in. A middle-aged man shouted, "Everyone, clear out now."

Everyone in the restaurant knew a big shot had arrived and quickly left.

The middle-aged man approached Esmeralda with a respectful look, "Ms. Vale."

"It's so boring that you found me so quickly." Esmeralda looked bored.

The middle-aged man glanced at Larry, then signaled to a few men in black suits, "Take him outside, break his legs, and gouge out his eyes."

Esmeralda got anxious. She stood up and shouted, "Yorick Ashford, what are you doing?"

Yorick snorted, "Daring to snatch you from Ms. Vale, he's asking for it."

Esmeralda said coldly, "Don't mess around. He's my friend."

Larry ignored all this and kept eating his breakfast.

Esmeralda stood up and pulled him, "Stop eating. You're gonna get yourself killed."

She tried to drag Larry out.

"I'm not done eating. What are you doing? Let go of me."

Esmeralda didn't let go and kept pulling him outside, warning, "Yorick, I warn you, don't follow us."

Yorick shouted, "Stop them."

A dozen men in black suits blocked the door, trapping Esmeralda and Larry.
