Chapter 62 You Can't Afford It

"Not much at all," Larry explained, "That's just one of them. The rich folks at Southwild Border give my boss money. It's in the tens of millions of dollars. My boss' assets are countless, worth several billion dollars."

"And what about you? How much did you get?" Chloe asked.

"Not much, just a few million dollars." Larry didn't dare to exaggerate.Chloe was shocked. "A few million dollars is already a lot."

Then, with a stern face, she scolded, "Larry, you usually seem pretty good, but I didn't expect you to be so bad, always thinking about making money."

"This is normal. Your mom also said that Harry's family in the company has made a lot of money by using their positions, with luxury cars and mansions. Victor just turns a blind eye, while dad, who is honest and law-abiding, gets scolded by mom."

Chloe was thoughtful.

This made sense. But, the nature of it was different.

This was a family business, and they were embezzling family money.

However, Larry was blatantly breaking the law.

She said, "Larry, return the money. It's okay to be poor. As long as you work hard, you can make money. If the higher-ups investigate, you're done for. I don't want to visit you in prison."

Larry laughed. "Chloe, it's not that serious. I've been to a military court. The higher-ups' punishment was to discharge me from the military, expel me from the army, and never rehire me. As for the money, the higher-ups didn't take it back. My boss spoke up for me. He saw that I had served for ten years, risking my life, so he considered it a reward."

He started to bluff.

Larry said a lot, and Chloe reluctantly accepted it.

She also believed his words.

A small soldier couldn't borrow a car to freely enter and exit the military district.

Now she knew that he used to be a big shot, but was discharged for embezzlement. Larry really knew big fish.

But even though Larry had some money, Chloe couldn't bring herself to buy a luxury car. She couldn't bear to spend it.

Since even the higher-ups acknowledged the money as a reward for Larry, Chloe had other plans.

She planned to use it as startup capital.

Chloe started talking to Larry about her dreams and ambitions.

As she spoke, she suddenly said, "By the way, Larry, you can't let mom know about this money. Otherwise, she'll brag about it everywhere, or even take it. This is our private property. My mom, like my grandpa, just loves to brag."

He asked, "So, should we buy a car?"

Chloe knocked on his forehead. "No, the money stays with me. I'll keep it. I'll decide what to buy. By the way, you go back first. I'm going shopping for clothes."

"Chloe I just told you I have some money in my account, and now you're sending me away. You're ungrateful," Larry complained.

"No, I'm going to shop for a long time. I'm worried you'll get tired," Chloe explained.

"That's nothing. Back when I was in the army, no matter how tough or tiring it was, I got through it. And it's not tiring to accompany the woman I love," Larry added.

Hearing this, Chloe felt delighted.

She couldn't help but hug Larry tightly around the waist.

Soon, the two of them rode an electric scooter to a women's clothing boutique.

This store was quite famous in Sunset City where the clothes were very expensive, often costing hundreds or thousands dollar, with some even costing tens of thousands of dollars.

Originally, Chloe didn't want to buy such expensive clothes, but Larry insisted.

She couldn't resist, so she came to take a look.

The boutique was luxuriously decorated, with some gorgeous dresses hanging on the racks.

Her eyes lit up, like a young girl, happily feasting herself with numerous clothes.

"Hey, don't touch things randomly. If you damage them, you can't afford to pay." A displeased voice came.

Chloe looked over and saw a sales clerk in a suit staring at her with a look of displeasure.

She quickly apologized, "Sorry."

"Chloe, what are you doing? We're customers. The customer is always right. You don't need to apologize to her." Larry showed dissatisfaction.

Chloe was too soft-hearted, and this kind of personality would easily suffer losses.

She tugged at Larry. "Larry, forget it. Let's go somewhere else. This place is too expensive, over ten thousand dollars per outfit."

She pulled him to leave.

Although he told her there was money in the account, Chloe couldn't bear to spend so much on clothes.

"Poor people, don't pretend to behave like a rich man." The sales clerk looked at them with disdain.

"You..." Larry was about to get angry, but Chloe quickly pulled him. "Alright, let's go."

She knew his temper. Larry could hit someone even at a family gathering.

If she couldn't hold him back, there would be trouble.

Soldiers all had a fiery temper.

Being pulled by Chloe, Larry didn't lose his temper.

The two of them walked towards the door together.

"Chloe, is that you?" At the entrance, a woman stared at Chloe with surprise on her face.

Chloe looked over and saw a woman in her late twenties.

She was wearing a long blue dress, holding a Chanel bag, with gold earrings, and a crystal necklace around her fair neck.

She looked beautiful and elegant.

She was also holding the arm of a man in his thirties, who was dressed in all designer clothes with a strong presence, clearly an important person.

"Who are you?" Chloe didn't recognize her.

"Chloe, it's really you?" The woman in the blue dress walked over with a charming smile.. "You forgot, I'm Lola Robinson."

"Lola, it's you." Chloe suddenly remembered. There was indeed such a person in her college class.

"Chloe, I heard you restored your looks and were named the most beautiful woman in Sunset City. I also heard the Lewis family looked for a husband for you?"

"Yes." Chloe pulled Larry over and introduced, "This is my husband, Larry."

Lola also pulled over the handsome man beside her and generously introduced, "This is my husband, Zach Anderson. The Anderson family in Sunset City is second only to the Four Great Families."

Zach's gaze also lingered on Chloe.

Her name was known to many in Sunset City.

Chloe was once the ugliest woman, now the most beautiful.

The contrast was too great, and it was hard for outsiders not to know.

At the sight of current Chloe, Zach also showed a hint of greed.

He glanced at the plainly dressed Larry and couldn't help but show a mocking smile. "Chloe, the Lewis family is quite a big family. How did you end up with such a useless husband? There are still many single men in my family. How about divorcing this loser? I'll introduce you to another one?"

Zach stared at Chloe, plotting for her.

He said so for the sake of himself.

"Thank you for your kindness, Mr. Anderson." Chloe smiled, pulling Larry to leave.

"Chloe, are you here to buy clothes for Kelly's birthday party?" Lola quickly pulled her back.

Chloe looked at her and asked, "What's up?"

Back in school, Chloe was always disliked and wasn't close to these people.

What was going on now? Why did they all have so much to say when they saw Chloe?

"Chloe, I heard your family was kicked out of the Lewis family. You probably can't afford such expensive clothes, right?" Lola asked.

Chloe darkened her face.

No matter how naive she was, she knew Lola was mocking her.

Chloe didn't want to bother with her and didn't want to argue with such a snobbish person.

"Two esteemed guests, please come in." At this moment, the sales clerk who had previously mocked Chloe walked over.

Seeing Lola dressed in luxury and holding a bag worth thousands of dollars, she immediately bent over, as if welcoming a deity, completely different from her attitude towards Chloe.

Lola held her head high, holding Zach's arm, and walked in gracefully.

She turned back to look at Chloe and laughed. "Chloe, tomorrow is Kelly's birthday party. In such shabby clothes, you better not go and embarrass yourself. Besides, the Lewis family is now the laughingstock of Sunset City, with that fake invitation to the Free King's succession ceremony. It really cracks me up."

"You..." Chloe was trembling with anger.

Larry calmly said, "See, I told you not to leave. We're not short of money."

His words piqued Lola's interest, and she immediately laughed. "You, a poor man, can't afford the clothes in here."
