Chapter 394 Chloe Wants to Jump Off a Building

After getting Alden on board, everything else fell into place.

Abigail drove Larry back to her place.

Once inside, Larry immediately dove into the second volume of the medical text. He was completely engrossed, trying to make sense of it all. He asked Abigail for a notebook and pen, jotting down what puzzled him, and then used the computer to look up the meanings of the ancient texts online.

He spent the entire day at Abigail's house, buried in the book.

"Hey, Larry, take a break and have some water," Abigail said, handing him a glass. She gently took the book from his hands and set it aside, her face showing concern. "You've been at it for hours. You're still recovering and shouldn't push yourself too hard."

Larry stretched, feeling the fatigue from a day of study. His mind was tired, and his head felt a bit foggy. He took the water from Abigail with a grateful smile. "Thanks."

"No need to thank me. It's what I'm here for. What do you want for dinner?" Abigail asked, her smile so wide it almost didn't fit her face. She knew their time together might be short, but being with Larry made her inexplicably happy.

"Anything's fine," Larry replied, not picky about food.

Abigail sat down next to him, almost leaning against him, and pulled out her phone to order takeout.

As she sat close, Larry caught a whiff of her perfume and shifted slightly to maintain some distance, smiling politely.

His unconscious move left Abigail feeling a bit disappointed. Larry still didn't see her as a girlfriend, maybe just a close female friend. She quickly ordered a variety of dishes.

After ordering, she said, "I've run a hot bath for you. Go soak for a bit. By the time you're done, the food should be here."

"Okay," Larry nodded, getting up and heading to the bathroom.

He hadn't been in long, just enough to undress and get into the tub, when there was a knock on the door.

"Need help with your back?"

"No, no thanks," Larry replied hastily, not daring to let Abigail in.

The knocking stopped.

Larry lay back in the warm water, staring at the ceiling, lost in thought about his feelings. On one hand, there was Chloe, a woman who had saved him and endured ten years of hardship for him. On the other, there was Abigail, who cared for him selflessly, a wise and organized woman who managed everything perfectly.

The two figures spun in his mind, leaving him confused and unsure of what to do. The more he thought about it, the more frustrated he became. He sighed deeply, deciding to put these thoughts aside for now. He'd deal with them after resolving the situation with Alistair and the election of the new king.

Larry drifted off to sleep in the tub.

The takeout arrived, but Larry hadn't come out yet. Abigail went to knock on the door, calling his name with no response. She pushed the door open and found Larry asleep in the tub. She checked the water temperature, which was nearly cold.

"How can you fall asleep like this? You'll catch a cold," Abigail muttered, gently shaking him. "Larry, wake up. Dinner's ready."

Larry woke up, blushing as he saw Abigail. "Why'd you come in?"

Abigail chuckled, "I knocked, but you didn't answer. I was worried something happened. I'm a woman and I'm not embarrassed, but look at you, all red-faced."

Her teasing made Larry even more embarrassed. "Can you, uh, step out so I can get dressed?"

"Sure," Abigail said, glancing at the tub before leaving.

Larry let out a long breath, got dressed, and went out to find the table set. Abigail handed him a fork, and he started eating.

Before he could finish, his phone rang. Seeing an unfamiliar number, he hesitated but then ignored it.

"Who was it? Why didn't you answer?" Abigail asked.

"No caller ID. Probably a telemarketer," Larry shrugged.

The phone rang again, the same number. This time, he answered.

A familiar voice shouted, "Larry, where are you? Get over here now!"

It was Chloe's mom, Maria.

Larry frowned, "What's going on?"

"How can you ask that? If anything happens to my daughter, I won't forgive you. Chloe's trying to kill herself because of you!"

"What?" Larry's face changed, panic setting in. "What happened?"

"She's threatening to jump!"

"I'll be right there," Larry said urgently.

Abigail, alarmed, asked, "What's wrong?"

"It's Chloe's mom. She says Chloe's going to jump."

"What?" Abigail's face turned pale. "Then what are we waiting for? I'll drive you."

"Thanks."

"Let's go," she said, pulling Larry along.

They rushed out of the house and drove to the military hospital.

At the hospital, on the eighth-floor window, Chloe sat, with a crowd gathered below. The room was filled with members of the Lewis family, who had been informed earlier by Abigail about Chloe's situation.

Maria, in tears, pleaded with Chloe, "What are you doing? Please come down. We can talk about this."

"Chloe, don't do anything rash. It's not worth it. Come down first."

"Chloe, won't you listen to your grandfather?"

The Lewis family members tried to persuade her.

"Don't come any closer," Chloe warned, looking at them. "If you do, I'll jump. Larry doesn't want me anymore."

She broke down in tears.

The family, fearing she might jump, didn't dare approach. Maria instructed everyone to back away.

Hearing this, they all stepped back.

Abigail drove as fast as she could. Larry remained silent, not wanting to hurt Chloe further. He knew that staying with her would only make her a target for Alistair again. He was about to face a brutal political battle and needed to appear invulnerable, not wanting his enemies to exploit any weaknesses.

He never imagined Chloe would resort to this.
