Chapter 238 Gathering the Heart

The assassin was quick and tough, but Larry wasn't a pushover either.

Larry's moves were lightning-fast, leaving the assassin no time to react. Before she knew it, his kick landed squarely on her body, not her head.

She went flying back, slamming into a big tree and crumpling to the ground.

The assassin spat out a mouthful of blood and tried to get up, but Larry was on her in a flash, pinning her down with his foot.

Stuck under his weight, she couldn't budge.

Larry crouched down, reaching to pull off her mask. Just then, she whipped out a dagger from her leg and lunged at him.

But Larry was ready. As soon as she moved, a silver needle shot into her arm, making it go limp and dropping the dagger.

Larry smirked and yanked off her mask. Yep, it was a woman.

He quickly jabbed a few more silver needles into her, then plopped down on a nearby rock and lit a cigarette.

The assassin felt weak but managed to sit up, leaning against the tree.

Larry puffed on his cigarette, watching her. She looked young, maybe twenty-five, and pretty, but her face was ice-cold.

"Who sent you?" he asked.

"Lost to you, got nothing to say. Kill me if you want; I ain't scared," she shot back, cold as ice.

"Still not talking, huh?"

Larry grinned, picked up a leaf, and flicked it.

The leaf zipped through the air, hitting a vital spot on her body.

She crumpled to the ground, screaming in agony. The pain was like a sledgehammer.

But being a tough assassin, she bit down and forced herself to endure it.

Larry frowned, impressed by her grit. He yanked the needles out, easing her pain, and sat back down.

Torture wasn't gonna work, so he needed a new plan.

"You came to kill me, so you know who I am. You also know your chances were slim and the consequences of failing."

She got up, leaning against the tree, eyes locked on Larry, still hunting for a chance to strike.

Larry saw right through her. "Don't bother. You can't kill me, but I can let you live. Answer my questions, and I won't kill you."

She laughed. "I came to kill you, ready to die. Death doesn't scare me; I face it every day."

"Not so fast."

Larry smirked. "You came for money. If death doesn't scare you, then money must be more important. But without life, what's money worth? Tell me, how much did they offer? I'll double it."

"Just kill me."

Larry frowned. This chick was tough.

He thought for a sec, then ripped her clothes, grinning wickedly. "The jungle's a good spot. You're a looker; it'd be a waste to kill you. Let me have some fun first, then I'll finish you off."

She closed her eyes, not resisting. She knew she couldn't fight back.

Larry reached out to touch her, but she stayed still.

He found it odd. What kind of training made such a badass assassin?

He was just trying to scare her, not planning to do anything. He stopped and sat nearby, smoking.

The female assassin cracked her eyes open, eyeing Larry, who looked pretty conflicted.

"So, this is Black Dragon, huh? They say you kill without a second thought, ruthless and all. Guess the rumors are a bit off."

"Just get outta here."

Larry shot her a glance and waved her off, looking kinda helpless.

She was stunned. Just like that, he was letting her go?

She came here knowing failure meant one thing—death. She never thought Larry would let her walk.

"Are you seriously letting me go?" she asked, testing the waters.

"Get lost," Larry snapped.

She got up, dragging her beat-up body, and started to leave. After a few steps, she turned back, seeing Larry still sitting on the rock, lost in thought.

She walked back over, looked him in the eye, and asked, "What do you wanna know?"

Larry's lips curled into a faint smile. He looked up at her and asked, "Ready to talk now?"

She sat down and said, "Depends on what you're asking."

"Who wants me dead?" Larry asked.

She shook her head. "I don't know."

"Seriously? Then why'd you come to kill me?"

"I took the job off the dark web. There's a global bounty on your head, up to a billion dollars now."

Larry scratched his nose. A billion bucks, huh?

"Who are you, and what group are you with? Since when did Summer Nation have assassins like you?" Larry stared at her, impressed by her skills. She was tougher than most he'd faced.

She hesitated whileLarry thought for a moment.

Her skills were top-notch, and now that he wasn't Black Dragon anymore, with plenty of enemies, he needed some pros on his side.

"Bet you're sick of the assassin life. Wanna settle down? I'm giving you a shot to leave that life behind and start fresh."

"Thanks for sparing me. I've told you all I can. Watch your back. More assassins will come for you."

With that, she turned and vanished into the darkness.

Larry frowned. In the military, he never dealt with assassin groups, so he had no clue who she was.

He didn't kill her because he wanted more info. Plus, he thought about recruiting her; his current crew wasn't strong enough. He needed to beef up his team.

He considered calling Free to check her background but knew Free was under a lot of scrutiny too, so he ditched that idea.

To dig into her background, he needed Grim Reaper.

He planned to ask Grim Reaper to use his underground intel network to find out who she was tomorrow.

Larry got up and started heading back, taking his sweet time.

Then, gunshots rang out.

Larry's face changed, and he bolted forward, landing in front of a big tree. With a powerful leap, he climbed up like a monkey, hiding in the thick branches.

A dark figure was fleeing in the distance. It was the female assassin from earlier.

She was shot in the chest, clutching her wound, stumbling deeper into the forest.

Larry watched from the tree. He saw a guy chasing her, masked and armed.

When the guy got closer, he got cautious, looking around and shouting, "Lyra, you know the rules. Fail the mission, you die. That's how it works. Come out now."

The guy's voice was loud. Larry heard every word from his perch.

'Fail and die?'

He was shocked inwardly. What kind of crazy organization had rules like that?
