Chapter 453 Compensation
Chloe was in the know now.
She was the second-in-command at the Cabinet Room, right under Richard. She wielded serious power. Even the four guardians had to listen to her.
But Richard had warned her, over and over, to keep her mouth shut, especially about Larry.
She knew what Larry had been up to lately and was dying to help him. With a pleading look, she said, "Babe, let me help you. I'm not just a pretty face; I can handle this."
"What do you know?" Larry asked, frowning.
"I..." Chloe hesitated.
She wanted to speak but couldn't.
"Someone told me," Chloe said softly, looking down.
"Who?" Larry demanded.
"I... I don't know," Chloe shook her head. "I don't know who he is or why he told me about your business."
"Really?" Larry was skeptical.
Who could know him so well and spill everything to Chloe?
"Really, I'm not lying."
Abigail, seeing that Chloe had indeed changed, couldn't help but say, "Larry, you should let her help. I'm running the company alone, and it's killing me. I barely sleep until two or three in the morning. Having someone to share the load would be great. Plus, she's your wife. It makes sense for her to be involved in your company."
Chloe looked at Abigail gratefully.
"Fine." Larry didn't say much more.
He turned and left the hospital room.
After he left, Abigail looked at Chloe and asked, "By the way, I haven't asked you these past few days. How did you find out about all this?"
Chloe replied, "Don't ask. I won't hurt Larry. He's my husband, even if we're divorced now. We'll get back together eventually. I'll support him wholeheartedly, and now I have the ability to do so."
Chloe was confident.
With her position as the second-in-command at the Cabinet Room, she could help Larry solve problems.
Problems that Abigail and Trinity couldn't solve.
Even if they both liked Larry, it didn't matter.
In a fair competition, she had a significant advantage.
She believed that with genuine effort, she would eventually win back the marriage.
She also knew about Trinity.
She knew Larry had been intimate with her.
But so what?
She was confident she would win and reclaim Larry.
Abigail didn't say much more and simply said, "Alright, then report to the company tomorrow."
Outside.
Larry was deep in thought.
He had never told Chloe anything.
Yet now, Chloe knew everything.
"Larry, what are you thinking about?" Paisley asked, following him.
"I'm thinking about Chloe," Larry replied.
Paisley was puzzled. "I'm also curious. I've never left Aurora Citadel and rarely move around there. I mostly stay with the Bennett family. How did Chloe recognize me at first sight?"
"Yeah," Larry nodded. "And she knows everything that happened in Aurora Citadel, including my capture by the Powell family and being sent to the Bennett family. Only those involved in these events would know."
"That's strange," Paisley frowned.
"Forget it, let's not dwell on it."
Larry shook his head, deciding not to think about it further, and left the military hospital.
As he walked out of the inpatient department, he saw a middle-aged man walking through the entrance.
Larry approached him and called out, "Mr. Cruz."
"Dragon King." Howard greeted him.
Larry waved his hand slightly. "Calling me Dragon King is too formal."
"We must maintain the hierarchy. Your position is higher than mine."
"Did you bring the information I asked for?"
"Yes." Howard nodded. "I'll send it to your email right away. Check it."
He pulled out his phone, opened his email app, and sent the information to Larry.
"Look, you don't need to beat yourself up. As soldiers, it's their duty. They sacrificed themselves to save you, and you took down Alistair, the demon. They'd be proud."
Larry shook his head. "It's different. They died because of my personal issues. I owe them."
Howard knew it was pointless to argue further, so he stayed quiet.
Larry took out his phone and saw the email notification.
He opened the email and started reading the information.
Then, he called Abigail.
"Larry, what's up? Need something?" Abigail's voice came through the phone.
"Do you have any personal money? I need to borrow some."
"How much?"
Larry did some quick math.
Forty-six people, even if he compensated each with ten million dollars, it would be close to five hundred million dollars.
"Give me five hundred million dollars."
"You think I'm made of money? You really dare to ask."
"I have it..."
Chloe's voice came through the phone. "Honey, I'll transfer it to you right away."
Chloe's money was all given by Larry.
She was beside Abigail and heard Larry asking for money, so she spoke up.
Larry didn't refuse. "Okay."
He hung up.
Chloe quickly made the transfer.
Soon, Larry received a bank notification.
He looked at the information about the families of his fallen comrades.
These people were from all over the country.
Larry planned to visit each one, to compensate them for their loss.
Ten million dollars might not be much, but it would ensure their families' future.
"Larry, are you going to visit each of your comrades' families?" Paisley asked.
"Yeah."
Larry nodded. "They died for me. I was injured and busy with Aurora Citadel matters, so I couldn't do it earlier. Now that I have time, I need to resolve this. Otherwise, I'll always have regrets. Let's start with the nearest, Sunset City."
Larry then visited each of his comrades' families.
He comforted them and gave them money, saying it was government compensation.
Over the next few days, Larry traveled across the country.
Five days later.
At the airport.
A man and a woman walked out.
Larry checked his phone and said, "This is the last one. His name is Sterling Graham, an outstanding soldier. Because Chloe called out, he tried to lure the enemy away and was shot dead."
Larry sighed.
If Chloe hadn't called out, he could have eliminated the enemy.
Sterling wouldn't have died.
Over the past few days, Paisley learned about Larry's experiences.
"Don't blame Chloe. She's an ordinary person. It's natural to be scared in such situations."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
Paisley nodded.
She had been with Larry these past few days and asked about his relationship with Chloe.
Larry didn't hide anything.
She learned that Chloe had endured ten years of hardship to save Larry.
"Ten years ago, she was just a teenager. She risked her life to save you. She's brave. If it were me, I wouldn't risk my life for a stranger. She went through a lot, faced ridicule and scorn, and inevitably changed."
Larry sighed. "Yeah, she suffered a lot."
Paisley continued, "A person's growth is influenced by their family. She's from the Lewis family, so she would be affected by them. You say she only likes money and heroes, but isn't that your doing? If you had told her earlier, none of this would have happened. And which woman doesn't like money or heroes?"
