Chapter 392 Only Seek to Have Once Had
Meditation isn't some magical thing. It's just a way to chill out your mind.
Larry didn't bother explaining more.
Abigail handed him a bowl of rice.
Larry grabbed the utensils and started eating like he hadn't seen food in days. After feeling weak for so long, he finally felt a bit of strength and energy coming back. He was still not as strong as most people, but he was sure that with some dedication, he could cultivate Qi. Plus, he had only skimmed the beginning of the second volume of the medical text. He hadn't even touched the rest yet. He was confident the later sections would have methods for cultivating Qi.
Seeing Larry looking a lot better, Abigail let out a sigh of relief, feeling like their struggles were finally paying off.
After finishing his meal, Larry put down his spoon and asked, "Hey, where's Mr. Cruz? I wanna check on him."
"Let me clean up, and I'll take you there," Abigail said as she cleared the dishes.
Larry put away the medical book and lay down to rest. Abigail soon returned.
"Do you need a wheelchair?" she asked.
Larry shook his head slightly, saying, "Nah, I can walk."
He struggled to get out of bed. Abigail quickly moved to support him. With her help, he left his room and headed to another room.
Inside, a professional caregiver was attending to a middle-aged man lying in bed, tubes connected to him, and a breathing mask on his face. As they entered, the caregiver gestured for silence and whispered, "Mr. Cruz just fell asleep. He's weak and shouldn't be disturbed."
Larry walked over quietly, placing his hand on Howard's pulse. After checking, he felt reassured. Howard's vital signs were stable, just a bit weak. With some rest, he'd be fine.
"I'll write a prescription. You get the medicine and give it to him," Larry said softly. The formula he prescribed would speed up Howard's recovery and strengthen his body's self-healing system.
"Okay," the caregiver nodded.
Larry wrote out the prescription and left the room. Outside, he asked, "Where's Chloe?"
Abigail pointed to a room across the hall.
Larry asked, "How's she doing? Does the Lewis family know?"
Abigail replied, "She's in bad shape, got shot twice in the thigh, lost a lot of blood, and passed out. She's still really weak, and the doctor said if she doesn't heal well, she might end up with a limp. I haven't dared to tell the Lewis family."
"I'll go see her."
Larry headed to Chloe's room. Inside, Chloe lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling in a daze. She couldn't believe she had survived, couldn't believe she was still alive.
Footsteps approached. Chloe turned slightly and saw Larry entering the room. Her expression turned excited, and she tried to sit up. The caregiver quickly said, "Chloe, you can't move right now. Just rest."
"Honey..." Chloe looked at Larry, her eyes welling up with tears, which rolled down her pale cheeks. "I know I messed up. Can you forgive me?"
She felt it was her fault Zaid died. If she hadn't called out, Zaid wouldn't have rushed out and gotten shot.
Larry shook his head slightly, walked over, and took her hand to check her pulse. Then he wrote a prescription and handed it to the caregiver, instructing, "Get the medicine according to the prescription."
"Yes," the caregiver nodded and left with the prescription.
"I'll step out for a bit," Abigail said, noticing Larry wasn't planning to leave. She wisely exited the room.
She sat outside the room, her expression complex, lost in thought.
Inside the room, Chloe lay on the bed, looking at Larry with a pleading expression, "Larry, let's get back together."
Larry raised his hand slightly, interrupting Chloe. "Chloe, we can't."
He had too many things to deal with now, and he didn't want to drag Chloe into it. Alistair was incredibly powerful. And there were even bigger players behind Alistair. Getting back together with Chloe would only put her in danger.
Moreover, he was conflicted and torn. Chloe had saved his life; without her, he wouldn't be here now. He had sworn to protect Chloe for the rest of his life, to give her the best love in the world. But so much had happened. And now another woman had entered his life. Caught between two women, he didn't know how to balance, how to choose, how to handle his feelings.
"I know I was wrong. Won't you forgive me?" Chloe said with a hint of resentment, starting to sob, "Is it because of Abigail?"
Larry remained silent.
"I know it's because of her. What does she have that I don't?" Chloe pressed.
Larry finally spoke softly, "You're great, you're amazing, it's just..."
"Just what? Tell me."
Larry sighed, "I've made too many enemies. Until I resolve these issues, I don't want to think about this. Just focus on recovering. I'll visit when I can."
Larry stood up to leave.
"Larry..." Chloe called out.
But Larry had already walked out of the room. He didn't look back, and Chloe cried in frustration.
Outside the room, Abigail saw Larry come out. She heard Chloe's sobs from inside and couldn't help but ask, "What happened? Didn't go well?"
Larry glanced at Abigail. Abigail was thoughtful and rational, always considering things for him. She really was a good woman.
"I'm sorry..."
Abigail laughed, "Why are you apologizing?"
"Call the Lewis family. I'm getting discharged."
Larry headed back to his room.
Abigail followed, asking, "You don't have a place to stay in Sunset City. Why not stay at my place for a while? Even though you have the second volume of the medical text, you're still weak. I have time to take care of you."
"I don't want to trouble you..."
"It's no trouble."
Abigail quickly took Larry's hand, saying, "You promised to let me take care of you, to let me be with you for a while. Don't worry, once you're healed, if you want to go back to Chloe, I'll respect your decision."
Abigail knew Larry still had feelings for Chloe. She didn't ask for forever, just for the moment. Having him now was enough. The more Abigail acted this way, the more guilty Larry felt, wondering what he had done to deserve such devotion from her.
"Oh, come on, why are you looking at me like that? Let's go."
Abigail's laughter snapped Larry back to reality. He grabbed the second volume of the medical text and left the hospital with Abigail.
On the way back, Larry said, "Let's not go home yet. I need to find Alden."
Larry had given Alden plenty of time to think. If Alden refused to cooperate, Larry would find a way to send him back to prison. Alden was an extremely dangerous person, and if someone like him got out of control, the consequences could be severe.
