Chapter 476 The Events of Thirty Years Ago
Chloe had reached the third level of Inner Energy, and Larry felt relieved. Now he could rest easy, no longer worrying about Chloe getting into trouble.
Larry didn't respond to Chloe but instead turned to look at the entrance of the volcanic cave not far away.
Chloe, understanding the situation, didn't press the issue and stood quietly by his side.
"Man," Larry sighed deeply, filled with helplessness.
When someone who looked like Richard appeared, he felt both joy and concern. Joy because Richard was indeed alive. Concern because Richard might truly be the villain Cody and Paisley described.
He desperately wanted to find his grandfather and ask him directly, to hear Richard say he wasn't the monster they claimed. But just as they met, Richard fell into the depths of the volcano. Larry watched helplessly as Richard fell, unable to do anything.
"Sweetie, Richard wanted you to live well. He didn't want you to get involved in any disputes, but you already have. So, Richard has been trying to enhance your power, to ensure you remain undefeated," Chloe said softly. "Richard told me that years ago, his family was expelled from the Bennett family and moved to Sunset City. Even though his abilities were stripped, he didn't give up. He studied medicine, searching for ways to regain his strength."
"He knew the family feud wasn't over and that the Bennett family would come for him eventually."
"Ten years ago, the Bennett family was burned down, and he barely escaped. He went into hiding and founded the Cabinet Room."
"He didn't come to see you because he was afraid. The Bennett family was too powerful, and his appearance would surely bring death. Now he's gone, but he left behind the Cabinet Room."
Larry turned to Chloe and asked, "Did Grandpa tell you what happened thirty years ago with the Bennett family? Why was he expelled?"
Chloe nodded, "He mentioned a few things."
"Tell me."
Larry sat down on a nearby rock, his curiosity piqued. He had always wondered about the events of thirty years ago and what kind of person his grandfather Richard was.
Chloe stood in front of Larry, gazing into the distance, recalling the past.
"Richard said there were always conflicts within the Bennett family. He had no interest in vying for the position of family head. His martial arts talent was exceptional, but he didn't practice the family's traditional techniques. Instead, he learned from a mysterious figure, which led outsiders to label him as having improper intentions."
"Thirty years ago, he was ambushed while training, causing his Qi to reverse, leading to madness and a violent outburst. He lost his sanity and went on a rampage, killing many family members. The family's elder subdued him, stripped him of his power, and expelled him."
"Richard knew that even if he was stripped of his abilities and expelled, the Bennett family would come for him as long as he lived. So, before leaving, he stole the Artwork of Moonlit. He said that as long as he had the artwork, the Bennett family wouldn't easily harm him."
"But in the end, it didn't prevent the family's destruction."
Chloe's voice was gentle as she recounted the story.
Larry listened, puzzled, and asked, "Did he tell you who ambushed him, causing him to lose his sanity?"
Chloe shook her head, "Grandpa didn't know who it was. He suspected it was someone within the Bennett family because his talent was unmatched among the younger generation, and he was the designated family head. Now that Cody is the head, it's likely that it was him."
Larry fell into deep thought. He hadn't interacted much with Cody, but he doubted Cody would resort to such schemes for the position of family head.
Larry asked, "Did Grandpa tell you anything else?"
Chloe replied, "Richard did share a lot with me, including some stories about the Gu raising person from a hundred years ago. But this topic has become taboo, and few mention it now. Richard didn't know much either. He only said that during the founding of the Summer Nation, many people sacrificed themselves, including the three major Gu raising families. These families made significant contributions during the war but were later suspected and exterminated."
Larry had heard Alden mention these events before. He knew that the king of the Summer Nation had united with some martial practitioners to eliminate the Gu raising person.
But this was common throughout history. Every new dynasty would purge those who had helped them rise to power.
Hearing Chloe's words, Larry realized that Richard wasn't the villain he was made out to be. He had been labeled as such because his training methods were unconventional. The ambush and subsequent loss of sanity led to his mistakes.
The two of them talked for a long time.
Soon, Paisley returned, bringing several red fruits with her.
The fruits were small, about the size of a fist, and bright red, resembling flames.
"Larry, these are Fire Lotus fruits. There are only four on the tree, and I picked them all. These fruits can transform your Qi into pure yang Qi," Paisley said, her face glowing with excitement as she handed the fruits to Larry.
Larry took the fruits and examined them. Aside from being warm, they didn't seem particularly special. He put them in his backpack and looked at the cave entrance, saying, "Grimshale the Gu hasn't appeared. Could there be another exit in the cave, and he escaped?"
Chloe nodded, "There are indeed many exits. The cave is interconnected, and there's an exit behind the mountain. He might have escaped."
"I need to go down and check."
Larry had left earlier, worried that Grimshale the Gu might return. But since so much time had passed without any sign of him, it seemed he had already fled.
Richard had fallen into the depths of the volcano, and Larry couldn't rest until he checked. Even if Richard was dead, he wanted to retrieve his body and give him a proper burial in Sunset City.
"Larry, even Grandpa couldn't go down there. How can you?" Paisley frowned.
"I have to try," Larry said, taking out his phone. He wanted to call for help and have someone bring equipment, but there was no signal.
He held up his phone, moving it around, but still no signal.
"We'll go back first, and I'll bring the equipment. I need to see for myself," Larry said.
Paisley couldn't argue with Larry's determination.
Chloe nodded, "Grandpa suffered for ten years, and now he's met this fate. We should bring his body back."
Larry said nothing and started walking.
The three of them quickly descended the mountain, retracing their steps.
